A small change to WordPress to make WHOIS International

I had a problem with wordpress when I first started using it, being based in Asia most of my commenters are from this region, mainly Malaysia.

So when I tried to look up the commenters IP addresses in WordPress, I didn’t get any information because it defaults to ARIN (The American Registry) to lookup the IP addresses.

Like for example this:

https://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=60.48.199.141

It just says registered to APNIC (Asia Pacific Registry).

Where as if you use another service like Whois.sc, it will show you proper location like so:

https://www.whois.sc/60.48.199.141

To fix this, you need to edit the /wp-admin/edit-comments.php file.

The lines you need to edit are 92 and 145.

You need to change:

https://ws.arin.net/cgi-bin/whois.pl?queryinput=

to

https://www.whois.sc/

Code Change

Then re-upload the edit-comments.php file to your active install, and refresh the comments page, you can now click the IP address of the commentors and get the correct information!

MACIBAI – A Piece of Internet History Just DIED

8 years, 8 freaking years I’ve managed to keep my DALnet nick registered without dropping it..

Since some time in September 1997, I had one of the oldest nicks amongst our gang.

Today I logged on to check something…and horror…my NICK HAS DROPPED.

DALnet Nick

Yeah this gives me THE RAGE.

The RAGE

Sometimes I feel the rage.

Today I felt the rage.

Someone cut me up on the LDP, so I tailed him all the way home, my rage was approximately 1500000%.

Yesterday I felt sever rage as my ping fluctuated between, bad (800ms) and fucking aweful (1400ms).

I felt severe rage as the Streamyx Dumbnician (I refuse to call them Technicians, as they about as Technical as my gran) patronised me with things like..

Dumbnician: Open the command prompt
Me: What for? It’s already open anyway
Dumbnician: Ok, so open the command prompt
Me: Ok what do you wan’t me to do?
Dumbnician: Type i p c o n f i g…
Me: Yeah but what do you want me to do? Renew the IP? Flush the DNS Resolver Cache?
Dumbnician: Type i p c o n f i g / f l u s h d n s
Me: But I don’t have any DNS issues, I can resolve sites just fine, I’m getting 70-80% packet loss and extremely bad routing even within the Streamyx network.
Dumbnician: Ok you need to reboot your modem.
Me: Sorry, but FUCK YOU.

I had rage, bad rage, serious rage, green bulging muscle vein pulsating on my head rage.

Approximately 11000100000000000% of rage.

Yeah I know, that’s a LOT of rage.

I seem to be getting the rage quite a lot lately.

Some people just give me the rage, for example:

a) People who patronise me
b) Babblemouths
c) Ignorant drivers (people who ride between 2 lanes, people who hog the express lane, people who don’t indicate)
d) Noisy eaters (Go and eat in your cave if you want to chew your food with your mouth open you fucking neanderthal)
d) Busybody good for nothings that talk behind your back to YOUR friends when it’s non of their business, they need to get their OWN lives
e) People who flood PPS with crap
f) Student loan company that wants proof of my sustenance
g) People that support or follow Xiaxue because they think it’ll make them ‘famous’ or get them more friends or something
h) Blog police, and those that are holier than thou
i) People who aren’t civic minded and care not for the environment
j) People who expect because you work in IT you can fix everything under the sun, including once the fucking TOASTER
k) Sexually frustrated online hard-men like Tim Yang
l) The person who invented the Malaysian Summons system
m) People that are ‘Vegetarian’ for moral reasons but eat fake meat and wear leather shoes
n) People that try and shove their religion down other people’s throats
o) People that misunderstand the word hacker and think hackers deface web pages

Hmm that’s a lot of rage, it almost gets to p in the alphabet, and that’s only people, not things..

Mostly I don’t get the rage, but when I do, I want to hurt people.

I want to rip their faces off and eat them with some nice spicy salsa.

Maybe I’ll go to the Gym more and drink less Jim Beam, then maybe I’ll have less rage?

What do you do when you have the RAGE?

The Box under Bill Clinton’s bed.

When Bill and Hillary first got married Bill said, “I am putting a box under the bed. You must promise never to look in it.” In all their 30 years of marriage, Hillary never looked.

On the afternoon of their 30th anniversary, curiosity got the best of her and she lifted the lid and peeked inside. In the box were 3 empty beer cans and $81,874.25 in cash.

She closed the box and put it back undr the bed. Now that she knew what was in the box, she was doubly curious as to why there even was such a box with such contents. That evening, they were out for a special anniversary dinner.

After dinner, Hillary could no longer contain her curiosity and she confessed, saying, “I am so sorry, Bill. For all these years, I kept my promise and never looked into the box under our bed. However, today the temptation was too much and I gave in. But now I need to know, why do you keep the 3 beer cans in the box?”

Bill thought for a while and said, “I guess after all these years you deserve to know the truth. Whenever I was unfaithful to you, I put an empty beer can in the box under the bed to remind myself not to do it again.”

Hillary was shocked, but said, “Hmmm, Jennifer, Paula and Monica. I am very disappointed and sadened by your behavior. However, since you are addicted to sex I guess it does happen and I guess 3 times is not that bad considering your problem.”

Bill thanked her for being so understanding. They hugged and made their peace. A little while later Hillary asked Bill, “So why do you have all that money in the box?”

Bill answered: “Well, whenever the box filled up with empty cans, I took them to the recycling center and redeemed them for cash.”

Adsense Referral Links are a Waste of Web Space

Google recently changed the way their Adsense Referral program making it even more unlikely that you’ll actually get any money.

You’ve probably seen the adverts around something like this:

Previously there was no limit, if someone signed up to Adsense under you and made $100, you would also receive $100.

Now Google has imposed a limit of 90 days, so the novice webmaster has to make $100 within 3 months, or you don’t get anything.

That’s pretty unfair, that means someone who is new to Adsense, has to average more than $1 a day in their first 3 months..hardly anyone does that.

Even for experienced people that might be quite difficult, I am making more than $1 a day (just about) on some sites after 4-5 months of learning about Adsense.

You can check the terms and conditions, the new clause is as follows:

An AdSense referral is counted when a publisher, who has never previously enrolled in AdSense, creates an account and earns at least $100.00 within 90 days of sign-up. The referred publisher must be eligible for payment to qualify as a successful referral.

Adsense Referral

Plus the fact if you aren’t using Adsense already, it’s unlikely that you wouldn’t know about it, and if you didn’t it’s unlikely you’d straight away be able to make $100 within the first 3 months.

I’ve taken the Adsense Referral Adblocks out of all my sites from the static locations and just left the Firefox ones, not to make money but because I support Firefox!

I’ll leave the Referral blocks inside any posts they are in, as they aren’t using up real estate.

Another point is that they didn’t announce this or tell anyone about it, they just kind of silently slipped the new rule in.

What happened to not being evil?

Jensense also mentioned this.

There is also a rumour from a Portuguese user that they have heard the complaints and have increased the time, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Google AdSense Team just sent me a mail message (in Portuguese, otherwise I’d copy/paste it here) saying that Google “take users comments very seriously and so they decided to change the 90 days referral window to 6 months”.

They also mentioned that, as of today, we still see the 90 days message in our referral page, but the decision was taken.

I won’t be putting it back up anyway, I’ve yet to have a sign-up.

Ikea Swedish Meatballs, Gravad Lax and Soft Toys!

I do enjoy going to Ikea for a little outing, have some food and a wonder around the vast store, perhaps purchasing a candle holder or something on the way..

I do like their furniture but I find it rather over-priced and tend to go there to get ideas rather than buy stuff, then I’ll go and find what I like at a local shop.

I really love the food though, especially the great Swedish Meatballs!

Ikea Meatballs

I’ve never been anywhere where they’ve managed to shove quite so many chips in a little pot either..

Ikea Chips

Lovely lovely meaty balls of loveliness!

Lovely Meatballs

The gravy is just perfect, and the slightly hard boiled potatoes (I usually mash them up with the gravy and a little salt and pepper, heavenly!)

Ikea Gravad Lax

The Ikea Gravad Lax is very good aswell with the nice tangy sauce, my Mom said she made it once but it took about 3 days, so I don’t think I’ll bother..

If you’re interested though, there’s a BBC Recipe for Gravad Lax here.

Of course the plates get licked clean 🙂

Clean Plates

After that I headed into the store to educate the next generation of children via the medium of soft-toy art.

I call this beautiful peice:

I’m good eh?

Movie Review – King Kong – What a handsome chap..

King Kong

Set in the 1930s, this is the story of a young and beautiful actress Ann Darrow from the world of vaudeville who finds herself lost in depression-era New York and her luck changes when she meets an over-ambitious filmmaker Carl Denham who brings her on an exploratory expedition to a remote island where she finds compassion and the true meaning of humanity with an ape Kong. The beauty and the beast finally meet their fate back in the city of New York where the filmmaker takes and displays the ape in quest of his fame by commercial exploitation which ultimately leads to catastrophe for everyone including a playwright Jack Driscoll who falls in love with Ann and plays an unlikely hero by trying to save her from Kong and her destiny.

I’m guessing everyone is familiar with the story of King Kong, at least in some part, most people have seen at least one of the numerous remakes, the most famous being the early ones in black and white with the tin aeroplanes on strings, best!

I was looking forward to this remake for some time, after I heard about Peter Jacksons’ involvement, and the fact of course that it would have a big budget.

I thought they did a really good job, I think I’ve seen all of the earlier versions, and I have to say this is amongst the best.

The emotion of the huge monkey best really comes through, I say any movie that can make you sympathise with an animal is already doing a good job, you could really feel what he felt, be it anger, sadness, despair or laughter and happiness.

The movie is long at almost 3 hours, but it doesn’t drag at all, it moves at a good pace through-out, with good character development for each of the main characters.

Jack Black is very good in one of the few ‘serious’ roles I’ve seen him in, he does play the slightly crazed, manic directly very well.

The action is amazing with the line between live action and CG/puppetry becoming even thinner, just like in the recent Narnia movie.

King Kong New York

It’s very much worth watching at the cinema, I’ll probably buy the DVD when it comes out so I can watch it again!

Great film, good start to 2006.

I’d give it a gripping 8/10.

Looking forward to Fearless, the new and maybe last Jet Li feature.

My Experience with Firefox 1.5 & Memory Leak Problems

Well I’ve been using Firefox 1.5 for quite some time now, so I thought I’d write a little bit about it, and let you know if it’s worth upgrading from 1.0.7.

The first thing I noticed was greater memory usage, this may have been due to some of the extensions, but from what I’d read a lot of it was to do with the way Firefox cached images, and didn’t release the memory after the tab was closed.

After a day or so of use…my memory useage often looked something like this:

Firefox Memory Leak

This is indeed quite insane.

That’s around 2GB of memory, including what it’s used from the page file, obviously something is wrong there.

I did see it improve slightly with an update to the Adblock extension, (d3 nightly 40 had a memory leak).

I’ve just updated to 1.5.0.1 today, so I’ll have to see if that makes it any better as it states in the release notes that it fixes some memory leaks.

I did notice a few minor leaks on 1.0.7, but nothing like this.

I didn’t have any problems upgrading from 1.0.7 extension wise, it told me which extensions weren’t compatible and helped me check for updates, everything I really wanted was available so that was great. I don’t use all that many extensions now, namely:

  • Adblock
  • IE View
  • Tabbrowser Preferences
  • DictionarySearch
  • BBCode
  • Google Pagerank Status
  • Download Manager Tweak
  • Bugmenot
  • Disable Targets for Downloads

One of the first things I noticed about 1.5 was it was considerably faster at opening new tabs, loading new pages and rendering HTML. It was quite an improvement over 1.0.7 (and it should be, with the amount of memory it uses!).

Something that really annoyed me about 1.0.7 was fixed aswell, the fact that when you had a pop-up window (like the comments on a blogger blog) and you opened a new link, it opened in a tab you couldn’t click on..you could only access it by using CTRL+TAB. In 1.5 a tab is actually shown, even in a pop-up which is good!

Firefox Tab

I’ve also noticed 1.5 does seem to be more stable with less random crashes and disappearing acts.

The update system is a lot more robust on 1.5 aswell, especially for the browser itself, for the 1.0.x series, you had to download the whole 5.8MB installer everytime you wanted to update a minor version..

Now the upgrade is slipstreamed and Firefox automatically downloads a small differential patch that installs itself without having to download the whole installer. It works just fine, I’m writing this via Firefox 1.5.0.1 installed via the new upgrade mechanism.

Other than that there’s not a hugely noticeable difference between 1.5 and 1.0.7, I held of upgrading to 1.5 for quite some time to make sure it was ok before I did.

The Eternal Struggle

A man and a woman, who have never met before, but are both Married to other people, found themselves assigned to the same sleeping room on a transcontinental train.

Though initially embarrassed and uneasy over sharing a room, They were both very tired and fell asleep quickly, he in the upper bunk And she in the lower.

At 1:00 a.m., the man leaned over and gently woke the woman saying, “Ma’am, I’m sorry to bother you, but would you be willing to reach Into the closet to get me a second blanket? I’m awfully cold.”

“I have a better idea,” she replied. “Just for tonight, let’s pretend that we’re married. ”

“Wow! That’s a great idea!” he exclaimed.

“Good,” she replied. “Get your own fucking blanket!”

After a moment of silence, he farted.
