How To Transfer/Export Your SMS From iPhone iOS & Import To Android

Well I’ve finally decided (with a little help) to ditch the only Apple device I own, my previously trusty iPhone 4. I’ve had it for almost exactly 2 years (got it the day it launched, October 2010). The Samsung Galaxy S3 did interest me a fair bit, but really the Note 2 is such a beast – who could resist?

Especially for someone my size. Anyway I was waiting eagerly for the iPhone 5 announcement and it was extremely underwhelming, then I installed iOS6 hoping it would make my life better – but it only made it worse (Google maps…are still the best). Anyway I’ll write more about this is another post, as the purpose of this post is instructional and related to something that took me a while to figure out.

Most of my stuff is already in the cloud (Gmail for contacts, Dropbox for files etc) – but SMS is the one thing that’s still stored locally in the phone and I had no idea how to get my SMS out of my iPhone into my Android. I had 1000+ messages so I’d prefer to keep them, I mean I could probably ditch them and survive, but I’d prefer to bring them along on the Note 2 journey if I could.

What I found out is as long as iTunes backup isn’t password protected or encrypted, you can extract your SMS from the iOS database and convert it to XML – which you can then import to Android. So here’s how you do it:

1) First step, plug your iPhone in and sync it with iTunes so you have the latest backup
2) Navigate to one of these folders depending on your operating system:

Windows 7 and Windows Vista: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\ (\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\)
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
(There will be a folder, or a few with a bunch of random looking characters, navigate into the one with the most recent timestamp.)

3) Locate the file named – 3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28

iPhone SMS Database

4) Upload that file to https://insend.de/ – this site will take the database, and convert it into an Android friendly format, you will have to pay $7.99USD to download the full file though – but at least you can see from the preview if it worked correctly.

Convert to XML

5) Choose the option – XML for Android right click, “Save as…” – you’ll get a file called android.xml
6) Install the following Android App on your phone – SMS Backup & Restore
7) Plug your Android phone into your computer, copy the android.xml file into the mass storage device in the folder named SMSBackupRestore
8) Detach your phone from your computer and open the SMS Backup & Restore app, choose Restore and select the android.xml app – confirm the import and it’ll make it happen.

SMS Backup & Restore

9) The end!

Happy now with my iPhone SMS on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 🙂

SMS on Android!

P.S. I found a free site that does the same, but I tried multiple times and it didn’t work properly so I opted to save myself the hassle and pay 8 bucks, feel free to try the other site if you want – https://faked.org/isms2droid/

Movie Review – The Dark Knight Rises (2012) – Mind = BLOWN

The Dark Knigh Rises (2012)

Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

Obviously this film was some time back, but I’ve been quite a fail blogger as late….and I’ve been meaning to write about it for ages. Now another film has come along that I want to write about (guess what?) – so I need to get this out of the way first.

So far, as 2012 goes, this is still the film of the year for me – and quite possibly one of the best films of all time in my books. Of course I watched in full IMAX glory, and it blew my face off.

I was literally on the edge of my seat for the entire 165 minutes – which makes it rather a long film. But did it feel long? Not at all. It’s at 8.8 on IMDB and already #29 on the top 250. I believe it’ll go higher, quite probably into the top 10 at some point. At least I think it deserves to be there anyway.

Batman Begins started the trilogy way back in 2005, and I think, heralded a new era in darker – more realistic super hero movies. Then The Dark Knight came along in 2008 and blew us away with the creepy, truly scary rendition of the joker.

And then July 2012 came, and the movie we’d all been waiting 4 years for came around – The Dark Knight Rises. Christian Bale was once again phenomenal as Batman, this time showing a wounded, much more human portrayal. An older, frailer Batman – not something we’d seen in the comic book style movies that came previously.

Christian Bale as Batman

And then there was Catwoman, who didn’t love Michelle Pfeiffer and well…Halle Berry was just disastrous. But Anne Hathaway – yummy! Great casting, and it was a much more realistic spin on the whole thing…rather than some old spinster getting eaten by her cats and getting super powers. She’s just a hot cat burglar…in a tight leather suit…mmmmm

Anyway enough about her. On to Bane, Bane scared the shit out of me – seriously. He was just quietly terrifying, and you could imagine when he hit you…it REALLY hurt. He was such a brute, but so fast and dextrous.

Quite possibly the best villain ever seen on the silver screen.

Tom Hardy as Bane

The action sequences in this movie were amongst the most immense I’ve ever seen, the score, the cinematography – everything just culminated into audio-visual mindfuck. The stadium scene, with the sweeping panaromic shots and the bass of the explosion rumbling in your stomach..That my friends is movie making.

There’s not much more I can say about this film, and there probably isn’t much more I need to say as you’ve most likely seen it already. And if you haven’t you’re silly because it’s not on IMAX any more.

I give this film 10/10 as I truly can’t think of anything I’d want to improve upon.

I Got Married On October 27th 2012 – Officially!

Yah, it seems surreal but it’s all over now. I’m all grown up, I wear a wedding ring..I have a nice watch to wear, I have a beautiful wife and a new awesome extension to my family.

We were surrounded by friends, family and those who mattered – it was an amazing day. I can’t say I enjoyed the lead up to it, it was intense, exhausting and easily the most stressed I’ve ever felt in my life.

But in the end it was worth it, we did amazing, our families helped so much and our heng dais and ji muis were just INCREDIBLE. It wouldn’t have been what it was without all of you and your patience and help.

I’ll write more again later, but I’ll just share the same day edit video we played during dinner of the morning session – for anyone who wasn’t there – enjoy!

Make sure you watch it 720p full screen! And don’t laugh at my singing too much please…

It’s by – https://www.3pm.my/ – I’m so happy with the video! And they edited that during the afternoon between the morning session and dinner! I can’t wait to see the full thing when it’s done.

And of course I’m super stoked about seeing the pictures by Anna-Rina and Matthew!

What a day! For those that came and enjoyed a special evening with us – I hope you had as much fun as we did 🙂

Movie Review – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) – Yawn

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner.

The last time I talked about the Spider-Man franchine was a LONG time ago in 2007 – as that’s when the last movie of the previous franchise came out: Movie Review – Spiderman 3 – Too long.. And well who loved Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man? No one really, yes he had the goofy part down part, but he was certainly not fit to be a superhero.

Finally they got around to rebooting Spider-Man, and they picked a great lead to do it with – Andrew Garfield. You would probably remember him from The Social Network as Eduardo Saverin. A much better fit than Mr Maguire IMHO, he’s not so nerdy but he makes a MUCH better Spider-Man, it’s a lot more faithful to the comic book universe and character it’s based on.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

The movie itself is beautifully shot and crafted, it makes subtle use of 3D – especially in the scenes of Spidey swinging through NYC – and it is absolutely stunning. The effects in general are great, although for some reason I found the bad guy looked too similar to Hulk in the Avengers (rendered by the same studio perhaps?).

If there’s one reason to watch it, it’s the reason Denis Leary gave – watch it to see Emma Stone in IMAX 3D – it’s worth it for that alone. She may not be the best actress around, but she is smoking hot.

Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

As the experience of watching the movie, I honestly found it quite boring – it was visually arresting and entertaining and the action scenes were great but I found it too long, extremely poorly paced and rather draggy in the middle.

Plus it’s not so exciting to re-watch a story you already know so well (boy gets bitten by spider, develops new powers, his uncle dies, he becomes a crime fighting superhero etc). Perhaps I’ll enjoy the next instalment more.

It’s certainly more inline with my tastes, more realistic and more gritty like the Batman reboot – but still..I don’t know – it just wasn’t the enthralling to watch.

It is a must watch movie of course, but it just doesn’t nail it for me – I’m surprised it scores so highly on IMDB with 7.6 – but I’ve lost faith in the ratings on IMDB some time ago. I imagine it’ll probably drop to a 6.x as time goes by.

The acting was good all around and there’s some great room for character development to continue, so I shall await the next episode.

I give it a limp spiderweb 6.5/10.

Stop 114A – A Major Threat To Freedom Of Expression Online

Stop 114A

What is Section 114A?

Section 114A is the second of two amendments made to Malaysia’s Evidence Act 1950.

Law Minister Nazri Aziz tabled the second amendment, formally known as Evidence (Amendment) (No2) Act 2012, in Dewan Rakyat on 18 April. James Dawos Mamit supported the motion, and Section 114A was passed after the second and third reading. On 9 May, Dewan Negara passed the amendment.

The amendment was gazetted on 31 July 2012. This means the law is now operational.

What is the purpose of Section 114A?

Section 114A deals with allegedly illicit or harmful content on the Internet. In short, the amendment enables law enforcement officials to swiftly hold someone accountable for publishing seditious, defamatory, or libelous content online.

How does Section 114A affect you?

Titled “Presumption of Fact in Publication”, Section 114A holds the following people accountable for publishing content online:

(1) those who own, administrate, or edit websites open to public contributors, such as online forums or blogs;

(2) those who provide webhosting services or Internet access; and

(3) those own the computer or mobile device used to publish content online.

In other words, if allegedly defamatory content is traced back to your username, electronic device, and/or WiFi network, Section 114A presumes you are guilty of publishing illicit content on the Internet.

But what if you were the victim of identity theft and a hacker wrongfully used your Twitter or Facebook account to post defamatory content?

Under Section 114A, you are still considered guilty until proven innocent.

What is wrong with Section 114A?

Section 114A is problematic for a number of reasons:

i) It disproportionately burdens average Internet users who are wrongfully accused of publishing seditious or defamatory content.

ii) It makes Internet intermediaries–parties that provide online community forums, blogging and hosting services–liable for content that is published through their services.

iii) It allows hackers and cyber criminals to be free by making the person whose account/computer is hacked liable for any content/data which might have changed.

iv) It is a bad law passed in haste and does not take into account public interest and participation.

How will Section 114A affect the freedom of expression?

Section 114A threatens the right to freedom of expression. Internet users may resort to self-censorship to avoid false accusations made under Section 114A. Bloggers, for example, may excessively censor comments made by their readers. As a result, Section 114A inadvertently stifles public discussion about pertinent political or social issues and protects public authorities, such as the State, from public scrutiny.

Movie Review – Prometheus (2012) – Love it…And Hate it.

Promethus (2012)

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

This is a film I’ve been looking forward to all year, I even mentioned it in my reviews of MIB III and Avengers.

It’s certainly been a controversial movie as it raises a lot of questions, far more questions than it answers. As a supposed prequel to the Aliens franchise, it bears a lot of similarities with the hardcore female protagonist (Sigourney Weaver/Noomi Rapace) and the robot sidekick (Michael Fassbender/Lance Henriksen). And well it was originally supposed to be a prequel, but later turned into an original work – albeit one that exists in the same fictional universe as Alien.

I’m a huge fan of the first 2 movies of the Aliens series, 3 and 4 were just trash. There’s been a lot of discussion how it relates to those movies, especially with the last scene and the Ridley Scott connection.

It’s doing well on IMDB with 7.6, although my faith in IMDB is getting less and less as the years go by – movies with high ratings can be 2 hours of pretentious crap. But that’s another topic altogether.

If you want a humorous look at the movie, you should check out these thoughts from Maddox – Prometheus in a nutshell.

As for my thoughts, I thought it was a fantastic movie – it was extremely visually stimulating (on IMAX 3D anyway) – it was beautifully crafted with subtle but enthralling 3D effects and it was just generally stunning.

I am rather confused as to why Charlize Theron was in the movie at all, but she’s hot so I won’t complain.

Charlize Theron - Prometheus

Michael Fassbender, who is one of the rising stars at the moment (especially after flipping his overly large penis out in Shame) was excellent as a dude playing a robot can be. He looked suitably robot like.

Michael Fassbender - Prometheus (2012)

If you don’t know who he is, you might remember him as the young Magneto from the new X-men movie.

All all in, it’s an extremely gripping, beautiful filmed, visually arresting spectacle. If you are a sci-fi fan, regardless of what you’ve heard – it’s a movie you absolutely MUST watch.

I plan to watch it again, later in it’s fully uncut form as apparently some parts were cut out in the Malaysian cinema version and I personally can’t wait until the next movie in the series comes out.

If you have already watched the film and were really confused by the movie, read this:

Prometheus: 8 Key Themes In Understanding The Film

I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was perfectly paced and time passed unnoticed – I walked out the theater feeling somewhat stunned, confused and amazed all at the same time. It’s a movie you’ll watch, take time to digest, think about, discuss and probably watch again later.

If you haven’t watched it, you must! I give it a mind-bending 8.5/10.

Running Unattended/Automatic Security Updates on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin

So a while back I wrote about – Running Unattended/Automatic Security Updates on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid, which was great and all.

But now Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is out, so I’m running all new installs on that (woohoo new 9.x versions of PostgreSQL, php-fpm in PHP core etc) and the previous update method I was using seems like it’s not totally reliable on all configs – and it’s a bit long winded = more opportunities to screw it up.

Anyway, I figured out a new way using a Ubuntu package instead of using a script and cron (which seems more sane to me).

This method seems to work 100% of the time, and when you log in via SSH to a 12.04 machine it gives you a nice update, which let’s me know it’s working at expected, e.g:

Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin Console

It should always say xx package(s) can be updated, but it should ALWAYS say “0 updates are security updates.” – if it’s working as expected (which so far it has been).

Anyway onto the install, it’s pretty simple – the first step is to install the required package:

sudo aptitude install unattended-upgrades

After the package is installed, all we need to do is configure it so:

sudo nano /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/10periodic

Delete everything inside and replace it with this:

APT::Periodic::Update-Package-Lists "1";
APT::Periodic::Download-Upgradeable-Packages "1";
APT::Periodic::AutocleanInterval "7";
APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "1";

That’s it, you’re done!

By default it only upgrades security packages, but you can adjust it to upgrade everything available if you want and even block certain packages from being upgraded, you can do so here:

/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades

Have fun, and be secure 😀

Diablo III – My Thoughts (After Completing The Game On Normal)

So if you are into games, you probably know about Diablo III and the 12 year wait fans of the game have experienced. It finally hit the streets on May 15th (about a month ago) and everyone has been going wild on it since.

I’ve not really been into a game properly since DOTA classic on RoC back in the day (which I was quite possibly a little too into).

And now Diablo 3 – which despite the haters negativity – is a really good game. I finished it on Normal after about a week

I love the gameplay – both solo and co-op. The auction house is great, I’m not so sure about the RMAH (Real Money Auction House) as that may well break the whole online economy as people buy up everything of value causing massive inflation. Also the botting gold farmers are going at it hard, there are multiple sites online already selling D3 gold fora bout $8USD per 1 Million.

The RMAH will allow for the sale of entire characters too – so I think account hacking will be rife. Other than that – I love the game, the storyling, the gameplay and the thought needed about build and item combinations.

It’s a loot-fest yes, hack and slash..it’s Diablo – what did you expect exactly? My only real gripe is that the classes are really unbalanced – they are all fine at Normal and Nightmare – some are a little weak by Hell and completely useless by Inferno (OHAI Witch Doctor).

Demon Hunter is over-powered – too easy to build a glass cannon and just kite – if you are playing co-op any melee heros get butt-raped real fast. I hope more character balances come too because WD is probably the most interesting class.

Monk was the first roll though because it looks like me, he’s level 55 now and my WD is level 31.

The cinematics are absolutely STUNNING.

Diablo 3 III Cinematics

I found completing normal a little easy – especially with a melee character, definitely more challenging with a ranged char (without hand-me-downs from higher level toons). It was a bit pedestrian, things get a little more interesting on Nightmare – but still fairly easy for a well equipped character and shit gets real in Hell.

Diablo 3 - The Prime Evil

I killed Diablo first try tho – it was easier than I expected, some of the other bosses (and sub-bosses) were harder. The graphics are absolutely superb, it helps that I play everything on the highest settings – woohoo.

Dead Diablo

This was my Monk when I completed the game – Level 33 with 25 hours of play-time:

Diablo 3 - ShaolinTiger

My attributes after finishing normal:

Diablo 3 Monk Attributes

My DPS was pretty low, but I was a good tank with about 4000 hitpoints.

And my achievements when I was done (22% overall achievements done – high points being 42% Campaign, 31% General & 29% Crafting):

Diablo III - Achievements

I really love the achievements, and the fact the sub-quests are randomized so every time you play a map you discover different things. There’s still sub-quests that level 60 players haven’t seen yet (and don’t even mention Whimseyshire).

There’s still so much more to play and explore, I’ve finished it on Nightmare and I’m on Hell now – trying to get my monk to Level 60 and capable of kicking arse in Inferno.

That will be hard though and I’m guessing will require a lot of farming and some mad high DPS + high resistance items. I just started an alt character during the past weekend too as playing Monk on Hell was a little too intense sometimes.

My Monk has about 4000DPS now and about 50,000 hitpoints – which isn’t too shabby. I’m really lacking on resistance gear tho and need to start getting some RES ALL type items.

I’ve gotten a Witch Doctor and started power levelling him and tooling him up with some sweet gear, the server was down for a LONG time last night – so I spent a lot of time reading on the forums. Turns out WD (as I mentioned above) is the worst char at high levels right now LOL. Oh well – I hope to make him uber powerful and a useful co-op partner and hope they buff his dogs/other summons soon.

I’ll probably write another post later with a bunch of tips for the game I’ve learnt along the way.
