Malam Tumpang Glamour – Sept 09

So a while back I started to hear about this super sekret underground invite only party called Malam Tumpang Glamour organized by Elfie, Michael and Reta.

The date was announced, but not the location or any other details.

It happened on Saturday night at an undisclosed location in Sunway – turned out to be a Tattoo studio called Inked, they have some wicked work check out their blog here – Inked Tattoo Studio.

There was quite a crowd, we arrived late because I had a headache and we got caught in a stupid ass jam down some lorong in Sunway.

Arrival at Inked

We had to down some nasty ass shots as punishment for our tardiness.

Emocharlie was the star of the night, he was a bit scared at first but after a while he was buzzing and running all over the place.

Discover Smile Zoom Malaysia – Starring Me!

If you’ve watched any of the Media Prima channels lately (NTV7, 8TV) you will have seen ads for this program, most likely featuring me!

Apparently I was also in the first introductory episode, but I missed that one. My episode was aired on Wednesday August 26th at 9.30pm on 8TV along with my excellent team mate Ted.

And here it is, it’s a bit blur because of the TV flickr and my camera could only capture 22 minutes at high res but it’s watchable.

Enjoy!

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

We dominated! Keeping it real of course.

I think we should be TV hosts no? Campaign the TV stations now to get us our own show haha.

BTW Streamyxsucks so bad it took me 4 hours to upload these 3 shorts clips AFTER downsampling them to WMV from MOV.

Puu Jih Shih Temple, Sandakan

It’s been a while since my last post about Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary — Sabah, Malaysia, and I’ve got some other travel stuff coming up so I better finish this series off!

We headed off to Sandakan after that and had lunch at the Ocean King Seafood restaurant, despite it being touted as a tourist trap – it was actually pretty good and the food was in as part of the tour so it can’t be that expensive.

Pretty Good Butter Milk Prawn

Then it was time for the city tour!

We were blessed with fantastic weather generally whilst in Sabah, but the blue skies when we visited the hilltop Puu Jih Shih Temple were just stunning.

Stressed…But Off To Sri Lanka!

I’ve been busy lately, crazy busy…a lot of paperwork, money, stress and headaches.

I hope it’ll be over soon, it’ll be great if it and I’ll post more about that later when it’s (hopefully sorted).

That accounts for my lack of updates, too stressed to think up anything decent to post.

Anyway I’m off to Sri Lanka tonight (well off to the airport tonight at 3.30am and flying at 6.30am Saturday morning *bleary eyes*). It’ll be a welcomed break.

I have been there before, I stayed in the CBD in Colombo but it was for work so I didn’t get to see much.

I did take a short tip to Kandy to see the tooth of Buddha! I’ll be heading there again, this time with a decent camera that doesn’t turn everything white into pink.

Picture from last time –

Kandy Temple

Nice eh LOL.

Of course I got to eat at the best seafood restaurant in the WORLD too – Beach Wadiya, I wonder if we’ll make it there again.

Oh well, see you all next Thursday!

Canon PowerShot G10 vs Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (LX-3)

I’ve been looking for a compact for a while, I was previously using the Fuji F31fd – pretty much the best compact camera ever made in terms of High ISO shooting and great pic quality straight from the camera (ISO1600 sample here).

It didn’t have the best flash and it was SLOW (both in AF and operation generally). Anyway unfortunately I either misplaced it/threw it away/or it got stolen.

Either way I didn’t have a compact any more, which become troublesome for more casual social events where I didn’t want to lug the dSLR around. Even as a photographer I need something light, and well it’s nice to have something that can take video too.

I’ve been looking for quite a while and was fairly well torn between the two best compacts on the market right now, both shoot RAW and deliver almost dSLR quality pictures especially in well lit situations. They both came out around the same time, both have strong followings and both have pros and cons.

Canon PowerShot G10

Canon PowerShot G10

Main Features

  • 14.7 Megapixel CCD sensor
  • 5x wide-angle (28mm) optical zoom lens with optical Image Stabilizer
  • RAW image recording
  • DIGIC 4
  • 3.0” PureColor LCD II and optical viewfinder
  • i-Contrast boosts brightness and retains detail in dark areas
  • 26 shooting modes with manual control and custom settings
  • Smooth, 30fps VGA movies

At the lowest ISO80 this is THE highest resolution compact ever made with staggering image quality, you wouldn’t be able to tell the pictures apart from those of a similar dSLR model.

After that however it goes downhill, that’s a major consideration for me as if I want to take awesome landscape pics..I won’t be using a compact.

Most likely I’ll be taking pictures in dark places.

As for me personally these are the Pros and Cons of the G10, in general terms and in comparison to the LX3.

Pros

Awesome image quality in bright light
Powerful built in flash
Optical viewfinder
A LOT of external controls for ease of use
5x zoom (LX3 is only 2.5x)
Shoots RAW

Cons

Bulky (Dimensions – 109 x 78 x 46 mm)
Struggles a little at high ISO
Lens not that fast (F2.8-4.5)

Sample pics on Flickr here:

Camera Finder / All / Canon / PowerShot G10

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3

Main Features

  • 10.1 Megapixels with Venus Engine IV
  • 24mm wide 2.5x optical LEICA DC lens
  • F2.0-2.8 maximum aperture range
  • MEGA O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer)
  • Joystick-operated manual control
  • Large 3.0” 460k dot LCD monitor
  • Raw and JPEG recording modes
  • Up to ISO 3200 sensitivity
  • Up to 1280×720 (30 fps) pixel movie capture
  • Manual exposure and focus options
  • 1/2000th to 60 sec shutter speeds

The LX3 is just an all around good camera, yah it has some downs but it’s a camera photographers can get excited about. Especially photography enthusiasts like myself looking for a secondary camera or a backup to their dSLR.

The only thing that really bothers me is the power of the flash, I guess I can work with it though and it has a hotshoe so getting a small portable external flash is a good option too for awesome party pics.

As for me personally these are the Pros and Cons of the LX3, in general terms and in comparison to the G10.

Pros

Much more compact and pocket sized than the G10 (Dimensions – 108.7 x 59.5 x 27.1 mm)
Awesome wide, sharp and fast lens (F2.0-2.8)
Good at high ISO (very usable up to ISO800)
Good build quality
Great 720p video recording quality
Shoots RAW

Cons

Limited zoom 2.5x
Not as many external controls as the G10
No built-in optical viewfinder
Weak flash

Conclusion

Honestly they are both really really good cameras, I just thought I’d put the info out there for anyone thinking of grabbing a compact.

Both are reasonably priced, the Lumix LX-3 is going for around RM1550 at the moment with a 4GB card and the Canon G10 is slightly more at around RM1750 with a 4GB card.

Honestly I wouldn’t recommend any other compacts unless you need something specialised (superzoom, waterproof etc).

If you want pure ergonomics, solid build quality and fantastic image quality just buy one of these two.

For me I’m leaning towards the LX3 for it’s smaller size, I already have a dSLR so I want something truly compact and light.

The Wedding of Galvin and Julea

I’ve know Mr. Galvin Tan for a very long time, more than 12 years now I think. I first knew him as DawgByte of course the lansi op on #malaysia DALnet.

Also affectionately know as Tan Kar Leng the Klang Chao Ah Beng.

Anyhow, he’s been dating the lovely Julea for a LONG time, and they finally decided to tie the knot. They already had their celebrations in Penang, and now was our turn to celebrate the union KL style.

The venue was Bangsar Seafood Garden Restaurant at Bangsar One – Jalan Ara, unfortunately a lot of people were late due to the ISA rally roadblocks and traffic everywhere.

Galvin & Julea

The hall was beautifully decked out and filled with family and friends.

Galvin & Julea Wedding Dinner

The usual suspects were gathered on our table, and we were ready to celebrate hard!

Kim, Rachel, KY & Horny

The most surprising event of the night was God turning up with his shirt tucked into his pants sporting a new 80+kg slim and svelte look!

Superslim God

Of course we got our drink on and enjoyed the freeflow beer and liquor.

Boyz will be boyz

There was a lot of yum seng going on as usual.

Yum Seng!

Plus the usual ceremonial parts, cake cutting and champagne popping. Congrats to Galvin and his beautiful bride Julea.

Galvin and Julea

And after that, more yam seng of course!

After that we went for another party to celebrate the birthday of the original drunk blogger, FireAngel..

What a night that was.

Twitter Advertising – The Next Big Thing?

So the big discussion online today is about the newly launched ChurpChurp – a Twitter advertising network.

Twitter has been ‘the next big thing‘ for a while now, and almost everyone is already on the bandwagon.

Thankfully it’s supporting the mass exodus without falling down or becoming lame, mostly because it’s a push platform you choose who you listen to and it’s easy enough to follow/un-follow and/or block people.

Naturally advertisers and entrepreneurs will see a large audience and associate that with dollar signs, not always the best reaction.

Due to the nature of Twitter, information is pushed out by people and displayed to their followers without any filtering (or any option for filtering). So if there is spam or ads in someones Twitter stream, everyone following them will see it (given they are online and ‘listening’ at that time).

This is bad when it comes to advertising, in a newspaper or magazine no one forces you to read the ads. But like on the TV when you’re watching a show you don’t have much choice but to see the ads if they are relevant or not and if you like them or not.

Twitter is similar to this, so I have a feeling ads will annoy people as Twitter is predominantly a personal platform for expression.

Advertising on Twitter is not a new concept, RevTwt for example has been around for quite some time. RevTwt works on the click-through model, you post a link on your Twitter stream and you get paid depending on how many people click on it.

This works for some people I guess, those people who have 16,000 followers..but are following 18,000 people.

It’s not hard to achieve given the time and patience, which leaves the Twitter advertising model open to abuse (especially if your primary metric for payout is by followers).

Saying that, not all advertising is bad – there has to be some way to manage it. It must be:

  • Controlled/Authorized
  • Disclosed

I personally think all forms of advertising should be disclosed, but then advertisers in this region haven’t reached that maturity level yet.

Even better on Twitter is if the advertising is properly controlled and sanctioned by Twitter themselves. If this doesn’t happen, whatever ad networks try and harness Twitter could be exposing their users to the risk of being deleted for spamming.

I believe ad networks should revenue share with Twitter and Twitter themselves should have ‘authorized ad providers’ which harness users directly (which is what brands and advertisers want).

The ads could have an API flag to mark them as an advert, and each ad network has an identifier. Everyone trying to advertise without authorization will be marked as a spammer and booted.

This also means ads can be opt-in/opt-out – so if you don’t want to see ads from anyone you can just opt-out rather than having to unfollow that person.

It means Twitter gets revenue as well without having to deal with the advertising platform itself, it just adjusts it’s API to accept the ads and takes the revenue share for providing the propagation platform.

The other option is to make the ads mandatory and to opt-out you have to ‘subscribe’ to some kind of premium Twitter account which has some extra features and no ads. I know Twitter is considering the premium account route, but I don’t think ads are in the picture so far.

They are also trying to figure out how to integrate ads or some kind of money making stream into Twitter without being evil.

There are ads in some Twitter clients, but that is to support the software rather than Twitter or any kind of service. You can remove the ads by purchasing the software (Tweetie for Mac).

And Twitter can’t have contextual ads on Twitter.com, because hardly anyone uses the site. The vast majority of traffic is via the API and 3rd party applications.

It’s an interesting time and I’ll be watching what happens with ChurpChurp, Twitter advertising in general and Twitter themselves as a company in terms of revenue.

Red Bull Rookies At Sepang For FHM Malaysia

You may remember I shot the Red Bull Rookies last year for FHM around Sunway and it was published in FHM August last year.

Well I had the privilege of shooting the new Rookies this year at Sepang! The pictures were published in FHM June, I don’t have a scanner at the moment so no scans just a Twitpic (will scan it properly later).

I was going to suggest that we shoot at a racetrack as it would make a relevant and interesting backdrop for the pictures, but they had already arranged a time during a practice spot!

We started off with some pictures of the girls in their racing gear with the Red Bull Integra. This is Puteri, she was one of the Rookies last year. There’s 2 new ones this year, racing along with the 2 more experienced girls.

Movie Review – X-Men Origins: Wolverine – ACTION!

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” tells the story of Wolverine’s epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed, and the ominous Weapon X program. Along the way, Wolverine encounters many mutants, both familiar and new, including surprise appearances by several legends of the X-Men universe.

I’ve been looking forwards to this film for quite a while, having been a fan of the X-men series and the last one being in 2006 – X-Men III: The Last Stand.

After seeing it, I wish I’d watched it at the cinema! It’s quite an action flick. It got some bad reviews and the IMDB score is reasonable but I really enjoyed it.

Hugh Jackman is a solid Wolverine, no complaints there and it’s good to see Liev Schreiber, he’s getting some great parts and is an intense actor.

Ryan Reynolds was a good addition too, he’s a smart guy and plays the funny/serious roles well.

Cinematography was superb and it was generally a fast paced film, even with the romantic subplot it played out well. Acting was good all around, nothing to complain about really.

I just need a bigger TV to watch it again in HD glory!

If you haven’t seen it I definitely recommend giving it a watch, it’s a must see for action fans and fans of the X-men franchise.

I give it a razor sharp 8/10.
