Project Airtrek – The Beginning

I’ve been wanting to change car for a long time, but due to saving for something else and financial commitments it really wasn’t a smart thing to do. So I had to bite my tongue, suck it up and carry on.

Not that I minded my previous car, the best Proton ever made, the Lotus tuned Satria GTi 16v.

Proton Satria GTi 16v

It was a great car with a solid engine the 4G93P, I spent some money on it sorting it out and it ran really well. It was getting too hard and too low and having a two door car especially with a growing dog (and growing girlfriend) was getting very inpractical.

The hardness came from performance tyres, TEIN adjustable suspension, nylon bushes and whiteline sway bars. It cornered like it was on rails, great for the track, hard cornering and lane weaving but not so great for everyday bumpy Malaysian roads.

I did quite a lot of performance mods to it too (mivec manifold, custom exhaust etc) without going the turbo route I got a lot of power from an N/A car. The next ride I wanted however must be a turbo! I’d always wanted a turbo car so I started looking around. Plus I needed something auto/tiptronic and with 4 doors, so that ruled out coupes and sports cars.

Movie Review – Drag Me To Hell – True Terror

Drag Me To Hell

Christine Brown is an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton. Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Should Christine follow her instincts and give the old woman a break? Or should she deny the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks, and get a leg-up on a promotion?

Back to his heydays of Evil Dead and Army of Darkness Sam Raimi has come out with a great modern terror film, yes that right the genre is terror not horror.

It’s cheesy, OTT gore and black comedy moments galore with a tense soundtrack and great cinematography.

I actually had quite low expectations for this film and was pleasantly suprised, it was actually really good! It scores an impressive 7.5 on IMDB.

For some reason I kept thinking the lead was played by Reese Witherspoon, but it’s not of course – it’s Alison Lohman who plays the part terribly.

The show is stolen however by the crazy gypsy lady Sylvia Ganush played by Lorna Raver.

In terms of concept it’s an old fashioned film with misdirection, suprise and suggestion but rather than becoming boring it’s really very enjoyable.

For Raimi fans (especially his early works) this is a must see, and generally a must see for anyone into horror/terror flicks.

One of the better films of 2009 definitely, if you haven’t watched it I suggest you do so immediately!

I give it an eye popping 8/10.

7.6 Richter Earthquake in Southern Sumatra – Tremors in Malaysia – Tsunami Warning Issued

Today at approximately 6.25pm I felt some strange vibrations in my office – my chair was shaking and my table was vibrating.

I checked with Suanie, at first she didn’t feel it but after a while she did – confirmed tremors.

It lasted quite a long time and felt like it came in 2 stages with a small break between, I’d estimate the tremors lasted around 45 seconds.

Nothing was showing on any of the monitoring services, but after a while it did show up. There was a powerful earthquake in Southern Sumatra at 6:17pm as confirmed by the USGS:

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2009mebz.html

Shortly after Twitter was flooded with earthquake talk.

A short while later a Tsunami warning was issued for Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and India.

https://www.prh.noaa.gov/ptwc/messages/indian/2009/indian.2009.09.30.102622.txt

No Tsunami is confirmed yet, but the latest is:

“JAPAN METEOROLOGICAL AGENCY: THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF A DESTRUCTIVE REGIONAL TSUNAMI IN THE INDIAN OCEAN.”

I hope it doesn’t happen, but let’s hope people are prepared this time if it does. The estimated times for contact are:

  • Georgetown 11.46pm 30th September
  • Port Dickson 3.18am 1st October

These are in local Malaysia time.

I will update here as I get more news.

Removing The Safety Blanket – Shaving Your Head!

If you knew me or have seen me around, you would have noticed my hair was thinning (although it is hard for most people to see because I’m 6’5″ – rather tall).

It was becoming a bit of a comb-over to be honest.

You can see the tragedy that was my hair in these pics:

Sandakan Town Tour – St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, Fishing Village

So after our trip to the picturesque Puu Jih Shih Temple in Sandakan we checked out the rest of the town.

We visited a church which is part of the heritage trail called St. Michael’s and All Angels Church. A quaint little church finished in the early 1900s, it reminds of those little village churches back in UK.

Movie Review – UP – Cute!

Disney Pixar - UP

Carl Fredricksen spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. But at age 78, life seems to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Junior Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life.

I’ve been wanting to watch this for a while, being a fan of Pixar films (I just watched Ratatouille again 2 nights ago on HD and Incredibles too!).

I had some time to go to the cinema so I got District 9 and UP watched in one night! Both great films, and both in IMDB Top 250!

Although I’m starting to think newer films get in much easier due to way more ratings than the old films and the sheep mentally of people ratings stuff other people think is good.

Even so, UP is still a great film – definitely one of Pixars best so far.

It’s a very touching story and I love Dug! I just wish EmoCharlie could talk now too so we don’t have to guess all the time what the hell he wants.

I like the fact that Pixar doesn’t use the current ‘big stars’ too, recognisable faces and voices – they tend to use great actors that are not so mainstream.

I mean Christopher Plummer is a fantastic and experienced actor, but I doubt any of the younger crowd have a clue who he is.

It just makes the whole narrative so much more believable and brings the characters to life.

UP is a very touching story, likely to make you both laugh and cry. Definitely worth watching if you haven’t already, and especially for those Pixar fans. I found the pacing a little off tho and there were some lulls where it got a little boring, other than that though it was all around good.

They seem to be on a streak now, with WALL-E and now this.

I’m not sure if I’d say it’s the best movie of the year, honestly speaking I think I enjoyed D9 more than this but it’s definitely up there with Star Trek.

Still waiting for Inglourious Basterds.

Watch UP if you haven’t already, I give it a balloon filled 8/10.

This one is for all the geeks, if you’ve been into tech for a long time you’ve probably heard of Cliff Stoll and his book The Cuckoo’s Egg and his paper Stalking The Wiley Hacker.

How To Catch A Rat – Malaysia Style

If you’d been following my Twitter recently you’d have noticed I’ve been having a Rat problem.

I then had a problem with numerous completely useless pest control companies.

They could only catch the rat if it’s dead, remove it from the premises etc. Even though I can SEE it in the TV cabinet, they can’t take it out…they need to put down poison and glue board and come back and take it away when it’s dead.

Jeez, what’s the point in hiring them? I can do that myself. And I can’t put poison down because I have a dog..plus I don’t really want a dead rat carcass stinking it up somewhere.

So well, basically I did, I went to the hardware store and bought 2 rat-traps (Chinese style) for RM8 each, cheaper than I expected.

I got all kinds of suggestions for bait, popular ones were fish head and dried sotong. Other suggested were lap cheong, peanut butter, bread and basically anything stinky.

I dried some kinds of meat, but it didn’t work. Then I thought maybe he’s a vegetarian, because his sneaking around had him eating our cheese biscuits then our pasta. So I googled a bit and it turns out he was a Roof Rat AKA Black Rat (even though they aren’t black but dark brown) and not the large and more aggressive Norway Rat we see in the sewers. They are smaller, have larger ears, longer tails and are extremely agile.

So I had to change tactic. He was nesting in the TV cabinet and feeding in the kitchen.

Movie Review – District 9 – Gripping

District 9

Thirty years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africa’s District 9 as the world’s nations argued over what to do with them.

I haven’t had the chance to go to the cinema for a while, but I really wanted to see this as I’m a huge Sci-fi fan and there has been a massive lack of decent Sci-fi movies in the last 10-15 years. All the decent ones came out mid-late 80’s and early 90’s. After that what have we had, Matrix? And..there’s been a couple, Dark City, and the only good recent film IMHO has been Children of Men.

Anyway I got the chance to head to the cinema, so I jumped at the chance of watching this and UP (which I’ll review later).

I’d go as far as to say, I enjoyed this more than UP. It’s rocked into the IMDB Top 250 at #49 and deservedly so in my books.

This is truly the first Sci-fi masterpiece we’ve had for a long time, a realistic, gritty, emotive piece of work which pulls you right into the middle of the situation and makes you feel like you are part of it. It’s been a long time since we’ve had something like this, since Blade Runner, since Aliens, since Brazil. Something new and different for once, not a cartoon/game/tv series/old movie remake.

The whole movie was carried superbly by Sharlto Copley as Wikus Van De Merwe the slightly psychotic pseudo-government agent.

It’s definitely amongst my movies of the year along with Star Trek, UP and some I probably haven’t watched yet.

D9 is most definitely not a typical popcorn, Hollywood blockbuster. The CGI is superb yes, but it’s realistic through-out and there isn’t ONE recognisable star in the whole thing..which is how it should be. You an see why Peter Jackson has put his faith in Neill Blomkamp.

Honestly, I can’t wait to watch it again on BluRay (or at least some HD source). It’ll be a film I’ll watch many times I’m sure as there are more nuances to the plot I haven’t picked up on yet.

I also loved that it was set in South Africa, with their whole Apartheid history it’s almost like watching the integration of the Africans and the birth of the first mixed race child.

If you haven’t seen this, I recommend you go and watch it immediately on the big screen.

I give it a prawn splattering 9/10.
