Sungai Gabai with Joey – Natural Light

This is the second set, with more natural light (and some help from a reflector to soften the shadows, wish I had a diffuser with me though), I hate having to rely on flash and I think these pictures came out much better.

More to come soon, just got back from Jakarta this evening so tired and busy!

Movie Review – SPL (Sha Po Lang) – Awesome Fights!

SPL

Hong Kong Police Detective Chan has devoted his career to putting the notorious triad boss Wong Po behind bars. While escorting a witness with damning evidence of Wong Po’s wrong doing to court, the police van is rammed at high speed by a car driven by the ruthless assassin Jack. The wreck kills the witness and his wife, but spares the witness’ young daughter. Detective Chan is left with a piece of glass in the back of his head. When the glass is removed, doctors notice a tumor in Detective Chan’s brain. He doesn’t have long to live making Detective Chan all the more determined to bring down Wong Po.

Plenty have people have mentioned this movie, especially after I watched Dragon Tiger Gate (Loong Fu Moon) and found it fairly crap..now I see what they were talking about.

Donnie Yen can create amazing fight sequences and this movie is one hell of a testament to that.

It’s a fairly typical gangster vs cops HK movie, it’s dark and quickly paced and it’s not only about action, it’s also about consequences of your actions..

Sammo Hung plays an evil, sinister, crazed but cool mafia boss and he plays it amazingly well, no hint of humour or lovable Sammo there.

The fighting is spectacular, and some is not even choreographed, they were just told to go for it and it really shows!

Especially the fight in the alley between Donnie and Jacky Wu Jing, wow, amazing! During the making of the movie, Donnie actually broke 3 batons on Wu-jings head filming that sequence.

There’s a good mix of traditional martial arts and some UFC style grappling/ju-jitsu.

The finale between Donnie and Sammo is nothing short of spectacular.

Donny vs Sammo

If you haven’t watched this movie, I highly recommend it.

It’s fast paced, gripping and the action is fantastic.

SPL feels one of the olden time HK movies, when they used to be good, you know like A Better Tomorrow and that era, when HK movies were still explosive, gripping and exciting. The way this movie is put together is raw, the fight scenes aren’t slick, they are Ong Bak/Tom Yum Goong style bone-cruching, face cracking, blood splattering, like the guys on screen are really actually trying to kill each other.

I give it a face busting 8/10.

Sungai Gabai Waterfall Model Shoot with Joey

So Saturday morning I got up bloody early to go to the Sungai Gabai waterfal in the Hulu Langat area, it’s about 30+km from the Ampang/Cheras area of KL.

It’s a beautiful place, but by the afternoon it gets too packed.

We were shooting a Bikini shoot with our cute model for the day Joey, it was an interesting shoot under challenging conditions with a couple of casualties (I think everyone fell on their ass at least once)..2 cameras ended up in the water and one Nokia N70 completely died.

Anyway onto the pictures!

The Present I Bought Myself! – Samsung 226BW 22″ Widescreen LCD

I’ve been wanting to get rid of my monitor for quite some time, heading towards a decent sized LCD, I was struck with the Viewsonic 2025 20″ Widescreen for a long time, but it didn’t even excite me enough to rush out and buy it.

I have been using a 19″ CTX Pro grade monitor with a Sony Trinitron CRT tube for about 5 years.

CTX

I had noticed 22″ prices had been dropping a lot too, so I started looking at those, surfing endless reviews…going around shops and testing them.

Happy Birthday to Me Again

It’s time to wish myself happy birthday again, I also extend the birthday wish to those lucky buggers (and bloggers) who share the same birthday as me, albeit a different year.

Terenceg my bro for many years
Bryanboy my faggot friend from the Philippines
& Smashp0p who dislikes me for some reason

I got a couple of cards from the UK and some presents.

Presents

The cards seem to get less and less each year, only two this year..perhaps people are forgetting me…!! Not sure if that’s good or bad 😉

I am always happy to get presents though!

Happy Birthday to Me!

I must say, I especially like presents that are mugs with boobies on!

Boobies

You’ll have to wait and see what the other present is, I should have time to take some decent pics of it, yay!

Anyway happy birthday to me and any other blog readers who have a birthday on this great day of March 21st.

Shall we party this weekend?

Movie Review – Blood Diamond – Gripping

Blood Diamond

Set against the backdrop of civil war and chaos in 1990’s Sierra Leone, Danny Archer, a South African mercenary, and Solomon Vandy, a Mende fisherman are joined in a common quest to recover a rare pink diamond that can transform their lives. While in prison for smuggling, Archer learns that Solomon–who was taken from his family and forced to work in the diamond fields–has found and hidden the extraordinary rough stone.

Thankfully had a little time at the weekend and managed to catch up with this movie, I’ve been wanting to watch it for quite some time and missed it at the cinema.

After winning quite a lot of acclaim and getting a few awards, it sparked my interest, it also scored a very strong 7.8 on IMDB.

I have to say it is a very good movie and Leonardo DiCaprio seems to be winning back a lot of skeptics, especially with back to back performances in this and The Departed.

Once again I’ve always said he was a good actor since watching What’s Eating Gilbert Grape..

DiCaprio and Hounsou

Hounsou put in a stunning performance as the fisherman caught in a civil war, at the risk of losing his family but having the chance to escape it all by finding a huge pink diamond.

The movie is a hard hitter dealing with serious issues much like Constant Gardener it also deal with issues in Africa.

This time however it deals with the issue of Blood Diamonds, diamonds exported illegally from conflict zones that support rebel factions in a civil war against the ruling government.

If the movie portrays reality or not isn’t an issue for me as afterall it is a movie, a work of fiction, not a documentary. You shouldn’t base your judgements or political ideals on what you see in movies. Saying that however, this movie will make you think if you really want to partake in buying diamonds or not as a lot of it true (like the fact the large diamond companies stock-pile diamonds to make them seem rare and keep the price high when stones like Ruby are actually much rarer).

Anyway, if you haven’t seen this movie I suggest doing so, it’s excellent and well worth a watch. Be prepared to be a little depressed after watching it however 😉

I give it a shiny 9/10.

Nuffnang – It’s very good MAN

Nuffnang

What’s it all about?

Ok so you may have heard of this thing called Nuffnang, or you may have seen the banners on my blog, or on other Malaysian blogs.

Most likely you’ve already signed up and perhaps you too are displaying the ads on your sites, if not…Nuffnang is a new advertising network aimed at blogs.

You can read more about it here:

https://www.nuffnang.com.my/

The target is initially blogs in Malaysia, so if you have a blog, do sign up (you just need 20 or more unique hits per day).

Why?

There’s no affiliate type scheme on Nuffnang, I just want to support the local guys and think it’s really great someone has the balls, insight and technical know how to try and do something like this locally.

On a global platform it might not be cutting edge, but for Asia, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

I also want to support them as their featured blogger (at the moment) looks very handsome and intelligent.

If you’re a blog reader you’ll probably be familiar with Leng Mou and Boss Stewie, one of the guys behind it. He’s a partner in Nuffnang, so show your support!

BTW when I said no to ads on blogs, I said no to irrelevant ‘contextual‘ ads that have nothing to do with the readers of the blog. I fully support a localised, targeted blog advertising network as I believe people with good blogs should earn money for their efforts.

Yah but what the hell does Nuffnang mean?

Some people have assumed it means nothing, but they obviously can’t use Google..as if you break the two syllables up it’s not that hard to find the meaning.

There’s a new dialect emerging in London called Jafaican or Jafaikan, which is a combination of Jamaican and African and possible Fake (as a lot of white kids use it too).

If you are familiar with Ali-G it’s something similar to the patwa he uses, the point is Nuffnang is something different and a different way of communicating with people.

Nuff means ‘very’ or ‘really’ and Nang means ‘good’ or ‘cool’, so Nuffnang means Very Good, or Really Cool.

You can read more at Wikipedia or an article in The Guardian.

I really like the fact they have dared to use a different non-generic name (one that doesn’t contain the word ‘ads’ for example) as it shows some creativity and they have forged a powerful brand for themselves.

Anyway I hope you support Nuffnang and local ads and the local guys doing something different sign up ASAP!
