Can You CONCENTRATE? Are We Getting Dumber?

Sometimes I wonder, I wonder where the human race is going. Is it really evolving? Or is it actually devolving?

It makes sense to me that people are getting stupider, society seems to embrace it even promote it. Dumbing down is becoming the norm, reading as a past-time is becoming obsolete (unless it’s trashy self-help books).

In a way, I think it’s because stupid people breed far more than smart people. It’s a fact, poor people fuck a lot without using any kind of protection, without thinking about their possible children education or future, without worrying about the consequence.

How many middle class or rich families do you know with more than 3-4 kids? I bet if you know many working class or poor families you’ll find they commonly have 5,6,7 or even 8+ kids.

You can say this works backwards to how evolution should, survival of the fittest? No, because the dumb ones breed a shit load more – so in the end even in a few win a Darwin Award and manage to kill themselves – they still net more kids than the smart people.

So eventually, those anal retentive middle class people who are so uptight they can’t even manage to get a boner long enough to procreate once are going to die out and the poor masses are going to out populate everyone.

A great example is Singapore, they are so uptight they no longer even want to fuck, they don’t want to marry each other, if they do they import wives from abroad. Even then they don’t have enough kids – their population is dwindling. They have INCENTIVES for having children, the more you have the bigger they get.

I guess living in a HDB unit you wouldn’t want too many though.

If you want to see a good example of this (albeit a little exaggerated) watch Idiocracy – the ironic part? The movie itself has been dumbed down and has some stupid narration to point out the ‘jokes’ because the average idiot wouldn’t understand it.

And what’s up with people and their attention spans?

I’ve been watching a lot of TV series lately, and I’ve started watching a few older ones more recently.

You know what I noticed, old series don’t have those annoying recaps at the start (well annoying for me because I have an attention span longer than a goldfish). I really love Dexter but the fucking recap is WAY too long, jeez I KNOW what happened in the last episode.

Can’t people even remember something they watched a week ago?

I’ve noticed recaps are getting longer and longer with the newer series, I’m pretty sure none of the old series I used to watch had recaps either.

It’s this new MTV generation where everything is packaged into bite sized infobubbles, ADD/ADHD is in the ‘in thing’ to have.

No one seems to be able to concentrate any more, kids rarely play RPG’s – they take too much patience. They like GTA, racing games, shoot em ups, things which don’t take prolonged concentration.

Old series used to end with dignity as well, the season wrapped up and left you feeling at peace – but looking forwards to the next one.

Modern series have to leave you kancheong with a cliff-hanger at the end of the episode and a super cliff-hanger at the end of the season to make all these attention deficit people bother to continue watching.

I think Lost is the worst of all for this, possibly followed by Prison Break.

I guess it’s related back to what I said at the top, reading teaches you patience and concentration. It teaches you imagination too and much more in the way of vocabulary, it helps you to express yourself more accurately with words and generally just improves your brain.

Watching TV, does quite the opposite – especially when you’re staring at a TV hooked up to a satellite or cable box with 100s of channels. There’s a reason why they call it the idiot box.

Anyway, did anyone manage to read all the way to the end of this post without drifting off? Just some thoughts that coagulated in my mind.

Interesting point you make man. Dunno why but I started humming Eddie Vedder’s Society while reading this 😉

However, here’s my take on why poorer people “breed” more. It is to do with human male’s (or for that matter any organism’s who reproduces sexually) to ensure that his genes live on somehow. It is programmed into us. How that is achieved depends how one gauges his environment. If one is poor then one has lesser access to health, sanitation, food, shelter, protection, education or any other things that more well to do people take for granted. In such a case, it is a better strategy to produce as many offspring as possible and hope one (or some) of them will survive and sire the next generation. It is only when has a secure future and the belief that one can raise fewer children while ensuring that they can be raised with access to basic needs and intellectual development does one use “protection”.

Think i am farting through the wrong hole? Check out Discovery or Nat Geo with my point in mind next time you watch a nature serial :).

mid class ppl copulate more cause
1)more stress leads to banging spouse
2)no $$ to pay electricity bill or get another spouse

rich ppl have less kids at home cause
    1)they have kids elsewhere
2)they dont necessarily fuck at home with their spouse.

Hi, first timer here. I couldn’t agree with you more especially on the dumbing-down of our TV series and games. Those TV flashbacks are so annoying. RPGs are quite educational, even indirectly. Great writeup. Thumbs up!

The poorer you are, the less $$$ you have to go out for other recreational stuff. Thus, you stay at home and without PS3, Astro etc, you’d get bored. So, the next best thing is to have sex. And of course, you could not afford condoms too.

  6. Ranga February 5, 2009 at 11:55 am #

    Excellent. Just freaking excellent.

I have completely no patience for stupidity.

An interesting post. I fully agree, that yes, development is pushing us to exercise our brain less and less. Reading books? Just watch tv. I know many of our generation grew up on mountainloads of books, but I hardly see children owning even half as many books now.

the opening of idiocracy put everything in a nutshell. the dumber ones just keep bonking like bunnies not giving a damn about who or what they hump, while the smart ones are focused on wanting to “have it all” before having kids…the dumb ones just add to the sheer volume of bodies…

i wonder if we’ll ever actually get to the point where the Joe Average of today would be the equivalent of the Einstein of tomorrow… :O

I did finish reading it but i guess other blogs have longer entries, I wouldn’t bother if the first 2-3 paragraph lacks essence or its boring.. time to hit the X button then.

    cheers.

That’s human and do welcome to the world of stupidity hehehe =))

Nice post. Apparently it appears that at the rate things are going, more and more people are going down the drain.

Funny how I could easily relate this to some “Masters” degree people who lecture for example, say IT, but they don’t even have the proper analytical skills to overcome small problems like searching for alternatives when something isn’t working properly.

Sometimes I wonder what kind of education kids are getting these days. Is it more of a memorize and score good grades education rather than the true meaning of learning and understanding?

people are becoming dumber because they depending on mainstream media for ideas instead finding it within them selves, and thus are rendered dumb,,this is wht i got

You’re right. I drifted until I saw your last line and I make it a point and read it all over again until the end!

“In a way, I think it’s because stupid people breed far more than smart people. It’s a fact, poor people fuck a lot without using any kind of protection, without thinking about their possible children education or future, without worrying about the consequence.”

I think that you should rethink the implication that poorer people are stupid. Though one has to wonder why poorer people do tend to have more kids :/ I reckon it’s mostly down to the fact that they will leave education earlier, and therefore start having children earlier (in the more developed countries). On a world-wide basis, poorer people often have more children because of cultural reasons, lack of family planning, and reasonable fear that many children may not survive to support the parents when they get old.

It’s true that concentration level is getting lower and lower. As i grow older and older, my concentration level dwindles and i forget things even faster than ever before.

As for procreation, most people are probably just too busy with work. Coming back home too tired to even do it, or even find life partner. It might sound like an excuse, but finding a life partner can be a chore too.

  17. Kenneth February 10, 2009 at 6:30 pm #

unfortunately, everything is getting shorter – attention, time, height – and smaller – brain, world, clothes.

You’ve lived in Asia for a while apparently. Therefore, I am surprised that you haven’t figured out that the reason poor people have more kids is so that they can depend on them later in life! They’re thinking about themselves, their survival. The kids take care of the parents when the parents get too old to take care of themselves. It’s a well known anthropological fact. There is no real government help for them. In Western countries where there IS government help for the poor, the poor have more kids so they can collect more government money! It all boils down to finance and survival.

As for TV recaps, yes they are annoying; but I think it’s meant more for people who have just stumbled onto the show and have no idea what the show’s about. The networks are hoping for new viewers this way.

    ShadowFox: Conspiracy theories ahoy!

Chatts: Haha how apt. I agree with what you say totally, but I think that’s only a part of it. It’s to do with many things including societal pressure, depending on the kids later in life as mentioned below, availability of contraception, education and ignorance to do with family planning, lack of things to do and many more sub-factors.

kevin: Hehe a true and skeptical look at things.

jonzz: Thanks, I think it is an interesting subject which can be discussed further.

Yunus Izam: Yup agree, those are other contributing factors.

    Ranga: Join the gang!

Jenny: The lack of reading in the younger generations does indeed make me sad – reading for the pure enjoyment of it takes a certain amount of practise in immersion and is one of the greatest pleasures in life.

beetrice: Yah I thought it summed up things well, I really hope it doesn’t actually turn out like that.

Vanessa: Good, glad to know you could digest it all 🙂

    JustinKC: Sad but true.

moons: It is, a lot of it is to do with the education especially in Asia where a lot is held back for the sake of the teachers ‘tuition’ business on the side. I have discussed education in Asia before and the problems I see with it.

KY: Haha you’re a reader la, short one like this should be no probs for you.

    kaswira: Yah it’s called spoon-feeding.

    eiling: Haha almost got ya!

julian: Yah it’s a lot of factors, and well I’m not saying they are stupid – they can be smart, but they are unlikely to be educated and exposed to the same information and resources a middle or upper class person has meaning they are more likely to fall back into menial labour and not use or develop their brain.

piccola: Yup, when you don’t stimulate your brain at work – you are just labouring you gotta do something to get your kicks at home 🙂

Kenneth: Haha yah, everything is getting smaller apart from prices *sigh*.

JJ: As I replied above to Chatts, I agree with what you say too but again that’s just another part of it – it’s not the whole answer. Nah I don’t think so, programs didn’t used to have recaps but no-one had any problem knowing what the show was about – the ratings were just fine. I think it’s truly an attention span/concentration issue.

Just to add my two cents (and not to seem contrary … though it might sound that way because I can’t be bothered writing diplomatically) …

Evolution isn’t survival of the fittest. That was a term coined by Huxley and Darwin didn’t like it as it wasn’t what his theory was about.

Dumb people may in fact be fitter to survive than smart people. Suicide is more common amongst the highly intelligent. So, maybe the smart want to NOT continue.

Technically, the TV seasons which leave with a cliffhanger are in serials and not series [though I agree, it has become common in series now a days … told you I wasn’t being contrary]. TV Series are different to TV Serials. Shows like Dexter are a serial, that is it continues / follows on from the last episode. [Well, Dexter at least it doesn’t end each season with a cliffhanger. Lost does though].

Serials have been around a long, long time. Indiana Jones was based on Serials from the 1930’s which used to play before the films in theaters (and you’d have to come back for the next film if you really wanted to know what happened to the hero in the serial).

TV series are a series of events. Such as Seinfeld or Gilligans Island. That’s why they always wrap nicely at the end of the show (and the show seldom moves much from the original characters etc). So, it is sort of difficult to have a cliff hanger without a double episode.

I just skip over the recaps at the beginning o Dexter. 🙂

ADD/ADHD was first identified in the 1930’s [if my memory is working], but was more of an ‘in thing’ in the ’90s. [The ’80s was Hypoglycemia]. Though there is still some hype around ADD/ADHD the hey day of it has died down. The main problem is they can actually prove if a kid has it using a PET scan, but most Doctors don’t even test for it, they just hand out pills. But ‘behavioural problems’, whether attributed to ADD or numerous other disorders [Aspbergers, slight autism, parents drugs dependancies, lack of discipline] etc are pretty much an in thing of the 00’s.

Yes, I got to the end … a very good read. Thoroughly recommend people to read it and comment. [Though, I didn’t read anyone else’s comments. Hope I didn’t reiterate anything].

yeah, you are right on there man.

i always watch the national geo….my wife would sit besides me and we would be flashed with the world children’s aid advertisement.

i always lash out during that adv by sying, “then why the hell they like to fuck and make soo many children?” bloody hell.

    cheers bro. Great writing.

  22. Lock April 10, 2009 at 9:17 am #

Oh my God! It’s so true. I can’t believe there are people besides me who notices. It’s like the quality of LIFE as a whole is degrading. TV shows like Desperate Housewives and Lost… it almost feels like a hassle to watch them.

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one who thinks how dumb the general society is.

I like the article, but the long recaps are for old people with bad memories. as for why stupid people breed more they like to fuck, it takes very little intelligence, in out in out baby , feels great and from an evolution stand point there is a higher chance of one the offspring not being killed by their own stupidness and usually stupidity is something you work very hard at not something you are born with. and TV is mostly shit but its just entertainment and 1 out of 100 shows are really interesting at least for the first season.

  24. nicole October 23, 2010 at 1:15 pm #

I agree with some of your blog…however i was a little offended how you perceive all dumb people as poor. Me and my two siblings grew up poor. My brother is a senior in hs and is gifted, my sister has graduated with her masters and I am 22 and a nurse. We didnt have all of the luxurys growing up such as television so we read alot. We didnt have video games, we had board games or played out side. We had to work harder to get where we wanted to be and going without most of the time, made us who we are today. Some of my childhood friends are also in college or graduated. Intelligence does not equate with money, however, money does help with success. There are studies that prove that having a higher econmic status does help with expenses in college and better education. If you knew anything about living in the ghetto, you would know how difficult it is to get out. But you sound like the typical white suburban kid that has no frame of reference other than what they see on the media, so whos the ignorant one? My ex boyfriend and his friends grew up with a silver spoon in their mouth….his parents gave him everything and he had every opportunity to succeed. However, he is so comfortable with getting everything, that he felt no need to go out and do for himself. As a result, he is 28 and still lives with his mom. Alot of his friends are in the same situation, or on drugs. My neighborhood was known for selling drugs but his was known for using. Another point is that I do agree that television and media has dumbed our society down(this is obvious) but our flawed education system has alot to do with it as well and people really shouldnt talk about things they know nothing about.
