Movie Review - Wanted - Better Than Expected!

25-year-old Wes was the most disaffected, cube-dwelling drone the planet had ever known. His boss chewed him out hourly, his girlfriend ignored him routinely and his life plodded on interminably. Everyone was certain this disengaged slacker would amount to nothing. There was little else for Wes to do but wile away the days and die in his slow, clock-punching rut. Until he met a woman named Fox.
I actually first knew about this movie when it showed up on a blog I subscribe to, Photoshop Disasters for a freakishly long forearm. Before that I hadn't really heard of it..but when I saw the trailers and all I thought it looked a bit cheesy, it had a decent cast (Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman) though so it should at least be worth a watch.
I somehow got the impression it was going to be quite poor, it was better than expected, but certainly not great. It reminded me a lot of Fight Club the downtrodden 'normal' guy 'Wesley Gibson' played by James McAvoy certainly made me think of Edward Norton in Fight Club.
He played the part well though, turning from a normal guy into a badass within a relatively short timespan. In some ways it's a lot like Matrix too, some may call it the poor mans Matrix with McAvoy being Neo, Jolie very much being Trinity and Morgan Freeman as Morpheus.

Jolie was the hot assassin badass bitch that kicked ass all over the place whilst looking flawless, you do of course have to suspend all belief to enjoy this movie..Her role reminded me a bit of how she played in Mr and Mrs Smith.
And of course the striking resemblance to the hot female mentor in Matrix..Trinity.

All in all the action was good, it was a pretty entertaining film. It scores a high 7.1 on IMDB but honestly I didn't think it was that good. It's not exactly original or difficult to work out the 'twist'...it's just a fun popcorn movie.
The special effects are nice, there are some cool moments, the characters play their parts suitably well and there is a couple of cool lines. It has some dark humour and some good action moments, it could have been better, but I did expect it to be much much worse.
I'd give it a bullet curving 6/10.

Two terminally ill men escape from a cancer ward and head off on a road trip with a wish list of to-dos before they die.
This is a movie I only heard about after the phrase "Bucket List" swept the Internet recently, a list of things you must do before you kick the bucket - nice eh?
It's a movie about two old codgers played by Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson respectively.
A sad and touching story with a spot of humour and lot about acceptance and human character, it's sad in some ways happy in others.
Some of the places they visit are truly spectacular, majestic to say the least and the filming of the locations is poignant and moving.
The dialogue between the two main characters is great, Carter played by Morgan Freeman - the downtrodden working class man who had never achieved his aspiration of becoming a history teacher and Cole played by the Nicholson - the flashy, rich, pushy and flamboyant business man.

Two quite opposite characters that end up getting along very well. Jack Nicholson tends to play very large characters, often larger than life and this one is no different. He manages to not overplay it too much though and Freeman balances it out with a steady performance through-out.
It's not the kind of movie I'd generally watch, it's a bit soppy but it is quite well done. I'd suggest giving it a watch if you want a break from all the fast paced action, cheesy comedy and superhero movies we've been seeing lately.
I'd give it a worth a watch 6.5/10.
3 commentsMovie Review - The Dark Knight - Jokertastic!

Batman and James Gordon join forces with Gotham's new District Attorney, Harvey Dent, to take on a psychotic bank robber known as The Joker, whilst other forces plot against them, and Joker's crimes grow more and more deadly.
Honestly I think Christopher Nolan can do no wrong....he's only made 8 movies and 3 are in the top 250 on IMDB...and I'm guessing this will make it 4 (Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins).
He's back again to take us on another rollercoaster, Batman Begins was hailed as one of the best superhero movies of all time and it really returned to the roots of Gotham City..dark, brooding, nasty and violent. The character of Bruce Wayne was captured by a fantastic Christian Bale - he's fast becoming one of the best actors around.
And this...The Dark Knight, just rocks in and blows you away. It's sad, truly sad that Heath Ledger is gone and I would be surprised if he doesn't nail an Oscar for his performance...he's truly terrifying, unhinged and totally believable as the joker. It's hands down one of the best performances in any movie I've ever seen. RIP Heath, you surely went out with a bang.

This movie delves deep into the character of Batman and Bruce Wayne, his own flaws and how the Joker desires to make him look at himself and why he does it - does he have a deep down loathing for society? It's a character study and a gripping one at that. The cinematography is perfect along with the sound-track - it really takes you there.
The Batpod comes out, and it's awesome! Christian Bale is great as Bruce Wayne and Batman, although the spotlight isn't on him so much in this movie.

Maggie Gyllenhaal was better than Katie Holmes in Batman Begins....but still not the strongest player in the movie.
The rest of the regulars put in great performances (Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman). Not sure about Aaron Eckhart still..The Scarecrow made a very brief entrance too, but wasn't really part of the movie.
The movie was long, and in places it felt it - this would be my one and only complaint. If not for that it's near perfection. This is the most I've written about a movie for a long time and I definitely have to get a BluRay version of this to watch on a huge HD projector at some time in the future.
I give it a dark and dastardly 9/10, definitely close to being best movie of the year.
I still feel elite as I saw this movie on Tuesday...and IMDB still doesn't have a rating because not enough people have watched it!
19 commentsMovie Review - Lucky Number Slevin - Complicated

A case of mistaken identity lands Slevin (Josh Hartnett) into the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city's most rival crime bosses: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). Slevin is under constant surveillance by relentless Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) as well as the infamous assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis) and finds himself having to hatch his own ingenious plot to get them before they get him.
I'm not usually one to watch movies straight after they are released as I don't much like the crowds, but I was at a pretty quiet cinema and the cast for this movie really attracted me, some real heavyweights with Bruce Willis, Ben Kingsley and Morgan Freeman in the same movie.
Plus it looked like my kind of movie, guns, killing, chicks etc.
It got a pretty good 7.4 over at IMDB and deservedly so.
The only bad thing I would say it did drag a little in the middle, but well perhaps this was due to the cinema being minus fifteen degrees and me losing the feelings in my hands..
The acting of course is sterling, with each character really developing their personalities and adding to the movie, Josh Harnett puts in a very strong performance carrying the movie through-out. It's a fairly complicated movie jumping about from past to present with characters switching roles. Don't be surprised if you feel a little confused after the first 20 minutes, it is an intricate but beautifully woven plot.
Sadly the ending was a little cheesy, I would have preferred if it would have ended a little sooner and finished with that hard edge, rather than softening it up and making me go 'bleh'.
Bruce Willis seems to have perfected the psychopathic professional killer after playing Jimmy The Tulip in The Whole 9 Yards.
There is apparently some bloody violence in the movie, but I didn't see any at all..the censorship was HORRIBLE with the censors completely missing the 'fuck' word and chopping out the remaining half of the sentence, the censorship was jerky, choppy and downright amateurish. It bordered on ruining the movie which was so beautifull directed and casted..
This is a movie that had an 18R rating at the cinema, over 18's only, WHY did they feel the need to censor it so heavily?
It's a caper movie though at heart, and it's Hartnetts movie even with the heavy weights in it, a nice black comedy, bit of action, few laughs and a well told plot.
I'd definately recommend it, and it would be too cliche to give it Slevin out of 10..
So I'll give it a strong 8/10.
7 commentsBatman Begins - Dark, just how I like it..

When fate prevents him from avenging the deaths of his parents, young Bruce Wayne (Bale) flees to Asia where he seeks counsel from a dangerous ninja cult leader known as Ra's al Ghul (Watanabe). When he returns, Bruce finds that Gotham City has become overrun with crime and corruption, and that there are forces at work trying to remove him from his inherited place as the owner of Wayne Industries. Discovering a cave under Wayne Manor, Bruce assumes a new identity as a secret detective and guardian of the people of Gotham City against the criminals that plague them...
Batman has gone back to it's roots, this is a gritty, dark movie with an impoverished crime ridden Gotham dominated by drug lords, evil-doers and corrupt officials.
There is a star studded cast, I was like, wow another famous person, and another and another and another (Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Ken Watanabe), and so many brits?!
It's already hoisted itself into the number 64 spot on the top 250 in the first week!
Not surprisingly it's a far far better movie than the previous few lame Batman attempts (Batman and Robin, Batman Forever *yawn). It's actually a good movie.
The original Batman was a classic! All the back from 1989. With Jack Nicholson as the joker. After that was Batman Returns in 1992, with Michelle Pfeieffer as Catwoman...meow! I loved that, but the film itself wasn't so great. Both were pretty gritty, dark movies, staying in line with the original comics, Batman Returns was a bit cheesier, after that it went downhill fast with Mr Freeze..
What most people don't realise is a lot of these comics are actually very violent and adult in nature addressing serious issues in a form more acceptable to the mainstream..
The action through-out was great, good fight scenes, nice gadgets, nice introduction to all the things we know so well about Batman.
The only thing that ruined it for me, was as usual the hotdog cheese American lovey dovey suck my hairy nut sack ending, SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS..
Anyway, if you haven't, go and watch it.
I give it a good 8/10 (9 if it wasn't for the ending).
