Why I Have to Take a Taxi Every DAY..

After I went to Batu Caves for Thaipusam…my car broke down on the way back, it actually seized up..

I smelt burning.

I wondered?! Then I noticed the temperature was rather high, oh dear….the coolant was topped up which means there was a problem with the cooling system.

I managed to get the car home, and to the mechanics the next day. But by then the Head Gasket had blown and the oil was leaking out of the seals..

Turns out the stupid water pump failed!

Oh dear indeed.

I was planning an overall anyway…but the gasket was unexpected, as I had just ordered new tyres (mine were condemned already, Sepang finished them off I think).

Plus I was planning to overhaul anyway (port and polish etc) as my car just passed the 100,000km mark!

So I added a couple of extras…

Anyway as my mechanic would say, the damage was rather ‘heavy’.

ENGINE OIL Q8 F1 – RM184.00
OIL FILTER – RM18.00
HEAD GASKET 0.4mm HEGAMI METAL (JPN) – RM350.00

PORT AND POLISH INLET AND EXHAUST – RM400.00
SERVICE INJECTOR – RM180.00
OIL CAP SEALS – RM8.00
MACHINE GRIND VALVE INLET AND EXHAUST – RM300.00
STAINLESS EXHAUST FROM MANIFOLD TO BACK BOX – RM1200.00
LABOUR TO TOP OVERHAUL AND REPLACE WATER PUMP – RM200.00
PIRELLI TYRE 195/55/16 – RM1,120.00
WHEEL ALIGNMENT FRONT AND REAR RM25.00
CAMBER – RM25.00
TOTAL – RM5,110.00

Maggi for next 3 months I think.

Sorry update was late today, had mega meetings, and no car yet..

Car is ready tonight, can’t wait to hear the engine, should sound like brand new, w00t!

It better do anyway..for that much money can almost buy a Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR!

dont worry….just think its ONLY approx GBP730 for all those new stuffs and labor.

by the way, the pirelli tyres you got there, seems quite reasonable price…..actually its quite cheap for 280each…make sure they’re reasonably new off the factory….

  2. Dr. Tan February 12, 2007 at 8:31 pm #

Man, you should have a category for ‘cars’

  3. Jamie February 12, 2007 at 8:32 pm #

Major ouch. *Hands you a tissue*

  4. v0ices February 12, 2007 at 8:50 pm #

    Ront,

    GBP 730 is also ALOT!
Besides, ST doesn’t earn in pounds (he only gain in pounds :P)

p/s: Argh! to your simple calculation.

so i guess no good food review for the next 3 months..? :(:( review maggie products..=.=

  6. Ront February 12, 2007 at 11:11 pm #

i didnt think he earn GBP…but be realistic lah…so many stuffs in the list and 5k…what do you expect? and RM200 for labor of all those? its a steal….

unless if all those materials are locally forged/shaped/pounded/pressed/wrought/cast in the backyard…

For that kind of money, you’ll get the my scooter. Brand new. Can pay cash somemore. Pretty expensive, but I believe it’s worth the moolah. Worth la the maggi diet for 3 months. 😀

so early you give the mechanics “shou gong” angpow 🙂

will you post your new “car”?

  9. cincailah February 13, 2007 at 10:20 am #

i would just replace what’s malfunction and save the rest for VR lens.

Welcome to the club of “kereta baru overhaul now have to eat maggi or indomee”

    About the VR.

Personally it’s a helpful lens but the least I would use. It’s huge, bulky, heavy, and can make a batt flat in full 2 hours usage.

Would just get myself 85mm 1.4 *sighs*

Hehe, btw for whoever is interested it ended up at RM5415 as I had to replace the rear bumper bracket too and a couple of other little bits.

Car is monster fast now too, like a new engine, but better than original, air flow is sweet, sound is muffled but with good bass tone and acceleration is fast all the way to 7k rpm without sounding raspy or rough. More torque at low revs too.

Perhaps will lighten flywheel a few KG next, bore throttle body a bit bigger, strengthen clutch (perhaps a hybrid, triple plate is overkill) and replace suspension with new set of TEIN adjustable.

Ront: Sadly I can’t think in GBP as I don’t earn GBP! Yeah the tyres are having a clearance now, most people are into AD07…last time I bought they cost me RM330 per peice, this time they are RM280 and reasonably new.

Dr. Tan: I did think of that some time ago, should have documented all the stuff I did to my car heh.

v0ices: Aye only gain pounds 😛

Ed: Yah some maggi, some ah soh chap fan, some kway teow

Ront: All are quality parts, mostly from Japan and stuff like Injector service/p&p/cylinder skim was done by local experts.

mspretty: Might post some bits of it hehe.

cincailah: Well I have 70-300mm VR which is good enough for me for now, so will spend a bit on car 🙂

Asyraf Lee: Haha yah damn pokkai now,aye I got my eye on 85mm f/1.4 aswell. 70-200mm is way too heavy and big and draining on your arms aswell as batteries.

  12. iamyuanwu February 14, 2007 at 6:34 pm #

Now that you’ve got a D200, every cent that you spend will be automatically converted into “lens-currency”. XD

    Seven times to Petronas (RM50) = 50mm f/1.8
One semester uni fee = Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
    etc… etc… etc…

  13. Albert Ng February 14, 2007 at 11:50 pm #

Go maggi! (At this rate I think it would be more fashionable to be completely bald.)

  14. adri4n February 15, 2007 at 5:41 pm #

basically u don have to pay tat extra 25 alignment stuff since u’re changing ur tyres u shud ask for complimentary when trying to accumulate the whole total figure… round up the accumated figure in your case .. try asking for rm5000 .. the mechanic normally gaining abit here n there for the different parts u change…

    😀

  15. ShaolinTiger February 22, 2007 at 11:43 am #

    iamyuanwu: Hahaha yah so true.

Albert Ng: Trust me I’ve been considering it.

adri4n: Nah been using this mechanic for 3 years, never haggle with him, he gives me fair price and I pay.

  16. leslie June 6, 2007 at 10:33 pm #
