NOT a Good Weekend…Car Broken Into – Camera Stolen

Yes my beloved 3 month old Nikon D70s is gone..gone I tell you.

It was supposed to be a good weekend, good plans, good company, good food..

I’d just done my research, asked around, saved up and bought a new SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 lens too on Saturday afternoon, I was excited to go home and try it out.

It all went wrong on Saturday night after having dinner in Section 17, we stopped by SS2 to buy some DVD’s near Murni Mamak, I forgot to take my camera down as it was brightly lit and there were lots of people around..

Unfortunately that made no difference at all the whole of my car window was ripped out and discarded underneath my car.

I didn’t even notice at first until I saw glass on the ground..and saw the whole window under the car, I was in absolute shock for quite some time.

Window Smashed

Window Smashed

I made a police report after that and a statement to the seargant..I’ll pass them a copy of the receipt and serial numbers tommorow.

It’s heartbreaking really, I was just getting to grips with the camera, and I really loved it, everything about’s one of the nicest things I’ve ever owned…and one of the most expensive, I think it’s more expensive than everything I own apart from my car.

And tommorow I’ll have to replace the window for that too..

I’ve just taped it up for the moment with some plastic bags and masking tape I could get from 7-11.

Masking tape Window

What breaks my heart is I know it’ll be sold to someone who doesn’t know anything about cameras, doesn’t appreciate and doesn’t know how to use it for a few hundred bucks..

It’ll probably be used on full auto till the battery goes flat then discarded.

If you do see a D70s body with AF-S 18-70mm Nikkor f/3.5-4.5G ED DX kit lens for sale do check the serials for me. It was in a small black and green camera bag.

Lens S/N: 3308292
Body S/N: 6069239

It’s in mint condition of course and contained a Kingston 2GB CF card and has a Manfrotto quick release tripod plate on the bottom.

I doubt those would still be attached but you never know.

Just a warning to everyone to NEVER leave anything in your car, even for a few seconds as that’s all it takes for it to be gone, about RM4000 flew out my window in a few seconds on Saturday night in SS2.

We all must learn a lesson from this, I’ve learnt the hardest one.

My phone has also stopped working, the screen has gone completely white…I think the heat and humidity and temperature differences in Dubai really screwed it up. Really not a good week for me at all.

Slowly money comes, then quickly it all goes.

So well…no new pics for a while, will post up some I haven’t processed yet, still quite a few from my UK trip to come.

Kinda depressed now, I still remember the joy of buying it and the excitement of handing over that wad of cash.

Urgh now comes the choice of D80 or D200 aswell…zz, someone win the lottery and donate half to me please! I’m considered D200 body and buying a second hand 18-70mm DX lens (~RM6100) then saving for an 18-200mm VR (~RM2800)! Or just getting a D80 with 18-200mm VR (~RM6400), choices choices.

The D70s already set me back a hefty RM3500 and the memory card inside was RM330 plus the cost of replacing my window.

I’ve heard of quite a lot of bad things in SS2 lately and still remember the shock when Suanie got burgaled…*sigh* things are getting bad.

Ouch. Kinda like when WL’s car was broken into and a brand new DELL notebook was taken. It’s like gone in 10 seconds.

  10. SS2 Sucks September 25, 2006 at 3:58 am #

well, that place near Murni and the housing areas in front of it is a popular place with snatch thiefs and car broken into.

These are just a few incidents that I remember while I was staying in Section 17 during my university days.

    1. Cars parked near the Public Bank (corner of the other end of Murni) after 5 minutes were broken into under sunlights. Laptops and cameras stolen.

    2. Handphone of an uncle was snatched in front of a camera shop (If not wrong YS Camera) nearby Murni. I was there with my GF, walking by. A car driver tried to catch the 2 Malay snatch thief on bike but cannot get bcos they got away speeding to the direction of LDP.

    3. Cars parked in the housing area in front of Murni (SS2/66?) were always broken into and valuables (car audio/CD player/coins) stolen. Some car owners tried complaint to newspaper and the news published. The next day cars got red paints and scratches marks.

All these happen in a place nearby SS2 police station! I think the distance is just 200meters, maybe?

ST, did u tried report the the police station? Well, just to tell u the truth, DONT bother! Why, I tell u what happened to myself.

Actually it happend to my GF just outside of the house we rent in section 19 (adjuscent to SS2). She was pushed and robed of her handbeg, blood in hands and legs.

So we went to report the case to the above mentioned police station in SS2, u know what happend? They took it like nothing happend, even dare to show my GF the list of snatch thiefs cases occured that week! Told my GF it is just a small case and dont take it too serious bcos not u only one got robed.

Well, thats my story of SS2, where *copies* of VCD and DVD can be found just outside the stalls of police station. Go figure…

    Malaysia Boleh!

    hugsssssssssssssssssssssss 🙁

btw i just found out that ireneq, who lives in the same area nearly faced the same situation i was in. but it was 7am (stupid fucks) and they were awake and shooed the burglar away

  12. Fird September 25, 2006 at 8:12 am #

I’m sorry to hear that man. I know how that feels. I’ve had a similar incident in Alamanda, Putrajaya about a month back.

I parked the car right next to the Parking Lot’s office, and not far from the entrance to the shopping mall (mind you, this is a so-called secured, paid, roofed parking lot).

My car got broken into and my bagpack (which happens to contain a few pair of clothes, my brand new spanking Laptop, some few more gadgets and worse of all, some warranty cards and registration cards for some of my gadgets, including my Nikon D70s as well (thank god I felt like bringing my camera with me that day, else I’ll loose that too).

  13. yothemans September 25, 2006 at 8:23 am #

    oh no……
i lost my camera once,so i knw how depressing it was.

next time should get it insured

  14. boo_licious September 25, 2006 at 8:36 am #

Am really sorry to hear about your camera and like yothemans, I also know how terrible it is since I also lost mine. Take care and I hope the fella who took yr camera dies a slow and painful death for doing such a dastardly deed.

  15. FireAngel September 25, 2006 at 8:56 am #

    aww fuck.

  16. meekie September 25, 2006 at 9:26 am #

why didn’t we have insurance company accept coverage for camera/ laptop here!

  17. KY September 25, 2006 at 9:29 am #

try to keep a look out at these few days I guess.

  18. lilian September 25, 2006 at 9:31 am #

  19. terenceg September 25, 2006 at 9:39 am #

OMG bro, !@!!@!@!$!@#@#$ …..can’t be nice to those bastards, start putting weapons in ur car like i did.
is very close to Raya, so there’s alot of cases like this..

sorry to hear this bro 🙁 i’ll ask my friends on the market if there’s anyone selling it.

  20. intensecure September 25, 2006 at 10:18 am #

Really feeling your pain. That just plain sucks. 🙁

  21. Az1 September 25, 2006 at 10:19 am #

I feel your pain bro. My car got broken into as well earlier this year. Missing things: laptop & olympus camera. Damn!

  22. Kelvin September 25, 2006 at 10:31 am #

    fucking bastards…

u may wanna consider these in future even though i’m sure u wont be putting in any more valuables in the car.

    1) install interior motion detector (even some blinking red bulb without an alarm inside can be deterrent)
    2) put a python or cobra inside your car

  23. suanie September 25, 2006 at 10:39 am #

    meekie: we do

  24. michaelooi September 25, 2006 at 10:47 am #

    i’ve learnt that lesson, TWICE!

    first, it was my notebook.
second, it was my CDs, sound system and my brand new Oakley.

    i totally feel you dude

  25. wombok September 25, 2006 at 11:09 am #

That totally sucks. But yea, i have learnt never to leave anything ‘suspiciously’ valuable in sight.

Sorry to read about your loss dude. Insurance?

  26. Jaxon S September 25, 2006 at 11:38 am #

aw, man.. that’s horrible! i don’t even wanna lose my old film camera!

  27. narrowband September 25, 2006 at 11:40 am #

No wonder some Malaysians live in some kinda constant paranoia. Never take anything for granted in a place like SS2. Heck, Malaysia!

  28. simon September 25, 2006 at 12:18 pm #

damn thieves. i won’t even leave RM1 in my car now.

I know its cold comfort, but at least you can shop around for a NEWER camera now!

  29. meekie September 25, 2006 at 1:41 pm #

suanie: With which company do you know? And what’s the premium like? Hmm, i hope ST bought one.

    Really feel sorry for him…

  30. Slinky September 25, 2006 at 2:03 pm #

Fcking hell.. I feel sorry for you, Shaolin.

  31. Galvin September 25, 2006 at 2:33 pm #

Bummer bro, I guess they are right. Never leave anything valuable in your car.

Sorry to hear about that 🙁

  32. Eve September 25, 2006 at 2:51 pm #

ou..that sucks! So sorry to hear that 🙁

  33. Hijackqueen September 25, 2006 at 3:46 pm #

Oh man! That sucks! Crime is basically high nowadays. We just need to practise a little caution.

  34. v0ices September 25, 2006 at 4:41 pm #

    Man, that sucks!
Like KY said.. start looking out at forums for cheap D70s. It might just turn up in any of them.

In the meantime, start saving up for D80 😉

btw, you still using the stock proton alarm? Did your alarm ring? If you need a better one, I got jalan for decent price

  35. bodicea September 25, 2006 at 4:47 pm #

    My condolence.

  36. elise September 25, 2006 at 6:31 pm #

My sympathies… 🙁 And people wonder why so paranoid, cynical, over-reacting and think too much… have to think of all eventualities & assume the worst may (will) happen.

Hmmm, I wonder if all the people commenting here start sending out thoughts/vibes wishing bad things on the evildoers, will the power of collective minds actually be able to make the perps :-
    a) get run over by other criminals such as snatch thieves (how ironic would that be..) b) get their own possessions trashed,stolen,etc.. c)basically anything that can make one believe in karma… 😉

  37. J September 25, 2006 at 7:58 pm #

    Re: Car – Ouch.
    Re: Camera – OUCH.

    You poor thing.
It sucks but that’s just how it is in Msia – bloody crime rate is pretty high in some areas.
(We’ve all had some petty or not so petty theft inflicted upon us at one time or another – I’ve had my bag snatched once *mutterBastardMotorcyclist!mutter*)

I hope you feel better soon.

  38. Michelle September 25, 2006 at 9:11 pm #

gosh i’m so sorry to hear that 🙁

this won’t help much, but i hope the police will be able to do something.

  39. jaded September 25, 2006 at 10:11 pm #

I so sorry to hear of your loss. Camera and car… ouch sure sucks big time ):

  40. CarThievesMustDie September 25, 2006 at 10:30 pm #

Your GTi’s window got smashed. My 6-month old GTi got stolen!

    Thank God for small mercies.

Nevertheless, commiserations… my heart sank when I lost my car, so I know how it feels…

  41. tj September 25, 2006 at 10:35 pm #

sorry about what happened…hopefully whoever did it will kena ‘kau-kau’…

  42. Dabido (Teflon) September 25, 2006 at 10:52 pm #

    OUCH! That’s nasty!

  43. hmm September 25, 2006 at 11:28 pm #

I rarely comment… but this is just too bad a thing to happen to anyone. Sorry to hear that.

hope you’ll feel better soon. Dont worry about the money.

  44. emilie September 26, 2006 at 3:03 am #

I feel you pain… all that hard earned cash…. ouch…. I seriously hope that guy gets striked by lightning and dies and horrible death… *sigh*

am hoping you’ll feel better soon…. this sucks, but I guess the bright side, as they always say, is that nothing happened to you…. 🙂

    God bless!

  45. nyg September 26, 2006 at 3:06 am #

It’s a bit ironic as if you had parked your car in a dark area those cunts probably wouldn’t have seen your camera. Really sorry to hear that. My girlfriend gave me stick for worrying about leaving my Xbox 360 in car (I was eating at Murni!) so I’ll have to show her this.

Be careful people, the streets just aren’t safe anymore.

  46. emilie September 26, 2006 at 3:07 am #

    feel your* pain… dies a* horrible death…

  47. pik September 26, 2006 at 7:19 am #

    damn man..

i’ve lost shit like that too in seconds but they weren’t in the range of yours + car damage..

guess i’ll stay in the states for a bit longer before i go back..

i leave my pods and wallet in my car at all times.. and i dont really always realize it

  48. E September 26, 2006 at 7:19 am #

I been overseas for 4 years now. Is it my imagination or is it true these crimes getting worse every day. I don’t remember car break-in like these before. Car stealing – yes, but break-in was not so common. Looks like they’re getting bolder.

  49. Fieran September 26, 2006 at 8:04 am #

Hey, so sorry to hear about the theft. I live in SS2..a lot of these things happen. A lady got robbed in front of my house at like 6.45 in the morning…people were standing there but they couldn’t do anything. “Nobody wanted to get involved”, you see. Anyway, don’t worry about it. At least you didn’t get hurt or something, that would have been worse.

  50. babe_kl September 26, 2006 at 11:08 am #

awww, i’m so sorry to hear this. well at least yr car is still intact. those blardy buggers stole our car right at the condo where we lived!!!! so many of my hubby’s stuff were inside, his fave CDs, 1 pair of Barker, 1 pair of Loakes, jacket… all gone! sighhh i feel yr pain, it will take a long time to heal. take care

  51. KFC September 26, 2006 at 11:08 am #

I used to quarrel with my gf alot regarding bring my laptop along after parked my car at ss2 for food or shopping around. She always scolded me for looking like a beast or burden by carrying my laptop bag and walking around pasar malam or restaurant.

After a few time since I’ve found alot of articles online and some experience of friends losing laptops in car. She starting to be understanding to allow me to carry my laptop bag with me.

I’ve learnt to be smart with my purchase as well. I’ve switched to lighter laptops (Apple Macbook Pro, slim and light) and bought a handsome yet colorful crumpler bag which happens to look nothing like a laptop bag (black leather for example).

I’ll show my gf again on ur article to reminds her of this.

feel sorry for u on losing ur d70. my gf lost her sony ericson handphone in SS2 a month ago as well.

  52. Matthew September 26, 2006 at 12:52 pm #

must be one of your fanatic readers, i’ll keep my eyes peeled though

  53. Streetwalker September 26, 2006 at 1:04 pm #

Sorry about your car and camera. Must really suck. It was probably one of those unemployed people with very little money and was hungry. He saw your car with the expensive goods and stole it to sell to feed himself. Hope the cops get him for you.

  54. puxape September 26, 2006 at 1:31 pm #

    I feel your pain…
been searching around the net and I found this…not sure if it’s yours?

  55. cleomy September 26, 2006 at 8:30 pm #

I hope that bastard that stole your D70 get caught and get fucked up and swear never to steal again but that will of course never happen.

I totally feel yr loss man.

I’m pretty sure everyone whom hv commented here have lost something dear in their lives before.

    I know I have.

  56. khang September 26, 2006 at 9:55 pm #

MCB! Curse the fucker !!!Curse them !!!
I’ve had a few friends got robbed in SS2 already… … I feel your pain.

  57. cooknengr September 26, 2006 at 10:18 pm #

From a D70s owner to another, I feel your lost. My lil sis’s D70 was snatched in Kuching…then she upgraded to a D70S.

  58. Sam September 26, 2006 at 10:37 pm #

Hey I saw you when you purchased the tamron. Said hi and left you alone since you looked like you’re on a serious mission. I bought a sigma 150mm the next day frm the same shop.

few months back, someone left a nasi lemak in a dark plastic bag inside his car. The thief thought it was sthing valuable, smashed his car window and stole it.

Oh well…ever thought of going Canon? 400D? better ISO performance. come on over to the white side…

  59. aprilcherrie September 27, 2006 at 11:10 am #

OMG…. 3 month old Nikon D70s gone????? arrr…. really sorry to hear that… arr…. oh wait.. did you pay ur camera using credit card??? if yes i think they have insurance for your camera…

    hey st,

this is so dissapointing. I am so sorry it happened. My gears are heavy and I carry on spare units when I bring them for work, and it slows me down while working. And I leave em in the car while I work.

sigh, guess have to figure something out ;(.

  63. Michael September 29, 2006 at 7:47 pm #

    Wow… sucks to be you.

But hey, look on the bright side, at least your cardidn’t get stolen. A lot of Satria GTi’s are getting nicked these days.

Hi, so sorry to heard that. Make it as a lesson, coz it happerned to me 4 years ago. I lost a laptop…..
Friend share this lesson with our friend…. remind them electronic items such as laptop, camera, don’t even think to leave it inside car, coz they got a special equipment to check the device especially when the device attached with bateries……
