NOT a Good Weekend…Car Broken Into - Camera Stolen

Yes my beloved 3 month old Nikon D70s is gone..gone I tell you.

It was supposed to be a good weekend, good plans, good company, good food..

I'd just done my research, asked around, saved up and bought a new SP AF90mm F/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 lens too on Saturday afternoon, I was excited to go home and try it out.

It all went wrong on Saturday night after having dinner in Section 17, we stopped by SS2 to buy some DVD's near Murni Mamak, I forgot to take my camera down as it was brightly lit and there were lots of people around..

Unfortunately that made no difference at all the whole of my car window was ripped out and discarded underneath my car.

I didn't even notice at first until I saw glass on the ground..and saw the whole window under the car, I was in absolute shock for quite some time.

Window Smashed

Window Smashed

I made a police report after that and a statement to the seargant..I'll pass them a copy of the receipt and serial numbers tommorow.

It's heartbreaking really, I was just getting to grips with the camera, and I really loved it, everything about it..it's one of the nicest things I've ever owned...and one of the most expensive, I think it's more expensive than everything I own apart from my car.

And tommorow I'll have to replace the window for that too..

I've just taped it up for the moment with some plastic bags and masking tape I could get from 7-11.

Masking tape Window

What breaks my heart is I know it'll be sold to someone who doesn't know anything about cameras, doesn't appreciate and doesn't know how to use it for a few hundred bucks..

It'll probably be used on full auto till the battery goes flat then discarded.

If you do see a D70s body with AF-S 18-70mm Nikkor f/3.5-4.5G ED DX kit lens for sale do check the serials for me. It was in a small black and green camera bag.

Lens S/N: 3308292
Body S/N: 6069239

It's in mint condition of course and contained a Kingston 2GB CF card and has a Manfrotto quick release tripod plate on the bottom.

I doubt those would still be attached but you never know.

Just a warning to everyone to NEVER leave anything in your car, even for a few seconds as that's all it takes for it to be gone, about RM4000 flew out my window in a few seconds on Saturday night in SS2.

We all must learn a lesson from this, I've learnt the hardest one.

My phone has also stopped working, the screen has gone completely white...I think the heat and humidity and temperature differences in Dubai really screwed it up. Really not a good week for me at all.

*sigh*

Slowly money comes, then quickly it all goes.

So well...no new pics for a while, will post up some I haven't processed yet, still quite a few from my UK trip to come.

Kinda depressed now, I still remember the joy of buying it and the excitement of handing over that wad of cash.

Urgh now comes the choice of D80 or D200 aswell...zz, someone win the lottery and donate half to me please! I'm considered D200 body and buying a second hand 18-70mm DX lens (~RM6100) then saving for an 18-200mm VR (~RM2800)! Or just getting a D80 with 18-200mm VR (~RM6400), choices choices.

The D70s already set me back a hefty RM3500 and the memory card inside was RM330 plus the cost of replacing my window.

I've heard of quite a lot of bad things in SS2 lately and still remember the shock when Suanie got burgaled...*sigh* things are getting bad.

well, that place near Murni and the housing areas in front of it is a popular place with snatch thiefs and car broken into.

These are just a few incidents that I remember while I was staying in Section 17 during my university days.

    1. Cars parked near the Public Bank (corner of the other end of Murni) after 5 minutes were broken into under sunlights. Laptops and cameras stolen.

    2. Handphone of an uncle was snatched in front of a camera shop (If not wrong YS Camera) nearby Murni. I was there with my GF, walking by. A car driver tried to catch the 2 Malay snatch thief on bike but cannot get bcos they got away speeding to the direction of LDP.

    3. Cars parked in the housing area in front of Murni (SS2/66?) were always broken into and valuables (car audio/CD player/coins) stolen. Some car owners tried complaint to newspaper and the news published. The next day cars got red paints and scratches marks.

All these happen in a place nearby SS2 police station! I think the distance is just 200meters, maybe?

ST, did u tried report the the police station? Well, just to tell u the truth, DONT bother! Why, I tell u what happened to myself.

Actually it happend to my GF just outside of the house we rent in section 19 (adjuscent to SS2). She was pushed and robed of her handbeg, blood in hands and legs.

So we went to report the case to the above mentioned police station in SS2, u know what happend? They took it like nothing happend, even dare to show my GF the list of snatch thiefs cases occured that week! Told my GF it is just a small case and dont take it too serious bcos not u only one got robed.

Well, thats my story of SS2, where *copies* of VCD and DVD can be found just outside the stalls of police station. Go figure...

    Malaysia Boleh!

I'm sorry to hear that man. I know how that feels. I've had a similar incident in Alamanda, Putrajaya about a month back.

I parked the car right next to the Parking Lot's office, and not far from the entrance to the shopping mall (mind you, this is a so-called secured, paid, roofed parking lot).

My car got broken into and my bagpack (which happens to contain a few pair of clothes, my brand new spanking Laptop, some few more gadgets and worse of all, some warranty cards and registration cards for some of my gadgets, including my Nikon D70s as well (thank god I felt like bringing my camera with me that day, else I'll loose that too).

Hmmm, I wonder if all the people commenting here start sending out thoughts/vibes wishing bad things on the evildoers, will the power of collective minds actually be able to make the perps :-
    a) get run over by other criminals such as snatch thieves (how ironic would that be..) b) get their own possessions trashed,stolen,etc.. c)basically anything that can make one believe in karma... ;)

I used to quarrel with my gf alot regarding bring my laptop along after parked my car at ss2 for food or shopping around. She always scolded me for looking like a beast or burden by carrying my laptop bag and walking around pasar malam or restaurant.

After a few time since I've found alot of articles online and some experience of friends losing laptops in car. She starting to be understanding to allow me to carry my laptop bag with me.

I've learnt to be smart with my purchase as well. I've switched to lighter laptops (Apple Macbook Pro, slim and light) and bought a handsome yet colorful crumpler bag which happens to look nothing like a laptop bag (black leather for example).

I'll show my gf again on ur article to reminds her of this.

    hey st,

this is so dissapointing. I am so sorry it happened. My gears are heavy and I carry on spare units when I bring them for work, and it slows me down while working. And I leave em in the car while I work.

sigh, guess have to figure something out ;(.

Hi, so sorry to heard that. Make it as a lesson, coz it happerned to me 4 years ago. I lost a laptop.....
Friend share this lesson with our friend.... remind them electronic items such as laptop, camera, don't even think to leave it inside car, coz they got a special equipment to check the device especially when the device attached with bateries......
