Cameron Highlands

Just got back, it was a short trip but a nice one. It’s always good to spend time with friends away from the city, away from all the needless distractions.

Even though there was a minor mishap on the way up, it all worked out in the end.

The above was the view when eating our scones.

Update more soon!

Hope you all enjoyed your long weekend, and bad luck for those that didn’t get one.

Can You CONCENTRATE? Are We Getting Dumber?

Sometimes I wonder, I wonder where the human race is going. Is it really evolving? Or is it actually devolving?

It makes sense to me that people are getting stupider, society seems to embrace it even promote it. Dumbing down is becoming the norm, reading as a past-time is becoming obsolete (unless it’s trashy self-help books).

In a way, I think it’s because stupid people breed far more than smart people. It’s a fact, poor people fuck a lot without using any kind of protection, without thinking about their possible children education or future, without worrying about the consequence.

How many middle class or rich families do you know with more than 3-4 kids? I bet if you know many working class or poor families you’ll find they commonly have 5,6,7 or even 8+ kids.

You can say this works backwards to how evolution should, survival of the fittest? No, because the dumb ones breed a shit load more – so in the end even in a few win a Darwin Award and manage to kill themselves – they still net more kids than the smart people.

So eventually, those anal retentive middle class people who are so uptight they can’t even manage to get a boner long enough to procreate once are going to die out and the poor masses are going to out populate everyone.

A great example is Singapore, they are so uptight they no longer even want to fuck, they don’t want to marry each other, if they do they import wives from abroad. Even then they don’t have enough kids – their population is dwindling. They have INCENTIVES for having children, the more you have the bigger they get.

I guess living in a HDB unit you wouldn’t want too many though.

If you want to see a good example of this (albeit a little exaggerated) watch Idiocracy – the ironic part? The movie itself has been dumbed down and has some stupid narration to point out the ‘jokes’ because the average idiot wouldn’t understand it.

And what’s up with people and their attention spans?

I’ve been watching a lot of TV series lately, and I’ve started watching a few older ones more recently.

You know what I noticed, old series don’t have those annoying recaps at the start (well annoying for me because I have an attention span longer than a goldfish). I really love Dexter but the fucking recap is WAY too long, jeez I KNOW what happened in the last episode.

Can’t people even remember something they watched a week ago?

I’ve noticed recaps are getting longer and longer with the newer series, I’m pretty sure none of the old series I used to watch had recaps either.

It’s this new MTV generation where everything is packaged into bite sized infobubbles, ADD/ADHD is in the ‘in thing’ to have.

No one seems to be able to concentrate any more, kids rarely play RPG’s – they take too much patience. They like GTA, racing games, shoot em ups, things which don’t take prolonged concentration.

Old series used to end with dignity as well, the season wrapped up and left you feeling at peace – but looking forwards to the next one.

Modern series have to leave you kancheong with a cliff-hanger at the end of the episode and a super cliff-hanger at the end of the season to make all these attention deficit people bother to continue watching.

I think Lost is the worst of all for this, possibly followed by Prison Break.

I guess it’s related back to what I said at the top, reading teaches you patience and concentration. It teaches you imagination too and much more in the way of vocabulary, it helps you to express yourself more accurately with words and generally just improves your brain.

Watching TV, does quite the opposite – especially when you’re staring at a TV hooked up to a satellite or cable box with 100s of channels. There’s a reason why they call it the idiot box.

Anyway, did anyone manage to read all the way to the end of this post without drifting off? Just some thoughts that coagulated in my mind.

Here’s Mom, Me and Jean at Desa Park City – they both love it there too, so let’s hope I can win the lottery and afford to live there one day!

Mom, Me and Jean at Desa Park City

The ladies are having a great time so far, they just got back from a 3 day trip to Singapore – they had fantastic weather and no rain.

I’m going to take them to the KL Hop on Hop Off Bus so they can have a proper city tour. I hope the weather holds up so they can have a nice view from the top of Menara KL.

Tomorrow night we’ll be going for a friends wedding then Sunday night it’s CNY Eve Reunion Dinner time. Then Jean is flying back on Sunday night…it was supposed to be Monday but my Mom booked the ticket at 00:30 on Monday which although technically is Monday is really Sunday night.

Have a great weekend!

New Trainers – Reebok Hex Ride Rally II

It’s been a long time since I wrote about buying new trainers, more than 3 years in fact when I bought some pimped up red and silver Nike Air Run Dual-D.

Nike Air Run Dual-D

That was around 3 pairs ago I guess, after that I had a silver and raspberry pair or Reeboks which were nice but had a hard piece at the back which popped out after only a few months and started giving me blisters (no pics of them, they are already long gone).

My really old stinky Reeboks totally lost it too at Chiling Falls when the sole came off.

Sepilok Jungle Resort – Checking in And Relaxing & Review

So we arrived at Sepilok Jungle Resort in the middle of the afternoon, we had some time to relax. We took dinner at the restaurant inhouse – it was actually pretty good and quite cheap.

I love this fern they serve there, they call it Sabah Vege (Sayur Manis) – delicious!

Anyway we had some time to read our books, and for me to wonder around and take some pics, play with HDR bracketing and my Cokin filters.

Sepilok Jungle Resort is a decent place, the accommodation is simple and clean enough, it’s not a luxury establishment – but it does offer rooms with air-con and it’s extremely near to the Orang-Utan sanctuary.

I had a wonder around the compound and found this interesting old building.

Then I had a play with my Cokin filters, please note none of these pictures are created with Photoshop or any imaging software (apart from the first in the first triptych) they are created by using a combination of graduated and solid filters.

First one (from left to right) – Mild HDR, Tobacco Grad + Reversed Blue Grad, Tobacco Grad + Solid Yellow (Larger here).

Cokin Filter Triptych

Second one (from left to right) – Tobacco Grad + Reversed Blue Grad, Solid Yellow + Blue Grad, Tobacco Grad + Solid Yellow (Larger here).

Cokin Filter Triptych

My favourite is probably Tobacco + Yellow Solid.

After we had dinner, the restaurant food was cheap, pretty fast and definitely edible. Plus it’s like eating in the middle of a jungle which is cool.

Hmmmm coffee!

You can find more reviews and ratings on Sepilok Jungle Resort here:

Trip Advisor

The other main choice is Sepilok Nature Resort, there isn’t that much difference – they are both walking distance to the Orang-Utan sanctuary.

I have to say though I have no complaints about Sepilok Jungle Resort, I’d stay there again no probs.

Movie Review – In Bruges – Black Comedy

In Bruges

Bruges, the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray and Ken, it could be their final destination; a difficult job has resulted in the pair being ordered right before Christmas by their London boss Harry to go and cool their heels in the storybook Flemish city for a couple of weeks.

This is a movie I’ve been meaning to watch for a while, one of the top rated for 2008 and scoring 8.1 on IMDB puts it at #227 in the top 250.

Assassin, romantic European location, good actors – surely a winning combination right?

I’d categorise it as something of a black comedy, it’s actually quite a deep movie about relationships, self awareness and guilt. Don’t expect any flashy action sequences or super cool assassinations because there aren’t any. It’s no Leon that’s for sure.

It’s pretty slow, there’s a LOT of character building, so the pace especially in the first half can become a little tiresome. The characters are good though and the dialogue is witty and quite snappy.

Thankfully the cinematography is spectacular, it’s really beautifully shot and I expect a large influx of tourists in Bruge after this!

Colin Farrell and Breednan Gleeson are great as the pair of hard-nuts trapped in a fairytale city ‘enjoying’ their holiday, you could say they equally share the main role.

Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson - In Bruges

They play a pair of hardened Irish killers for hire until the thumb of a maniacal cockney boss named Harry, the story unfolds in the second half of the movie so I won’t spoil it by elaborating here. It most definitely Colin Farrell’s best role for a long time, he really makes you think about the character he plays.

It’s funny in part, sad in part and the fleeting action sequences are well done.

Ralph Fiennes shows his acting versatility once again by playing the straight line cockney mob boss Harry Water.

Ralph Fiennes - In Bruges

This movie might remind you somewhat of Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and the good stuff from Guy Ritchie, the characters are endearing. To me it’s not a cult classic though, there’s nothing different or outstanding about it.

It doesn’t have a strong or unique style either visually or in terms of dialogue. It is however actually a very dark movie if you think about the concepts involved.

One thing I noticed though is the musical score seemed completely out of place in this movie, perhaps they ran out of budget for the music?

I guess my expectations were too high, don’t get me wrong it’s a good movie and definitely worth watching.

Personally I give it a worth watching 6.5/10 – but don’t expect too much.
