I’m Back from Sabah – Meet Jackie
Will post some pictures soon, gotta get all the clothes to the laundry and tidy up the house a bit, load up all the photos (lucky my PSD has Firewire!) and a few other things I need to do.
Just a taster – Meet Jackie.

Jackie is a fairly domesticated Orang-Utan in Sabah near to Mount Kinabalu. She comes out of the forest every day to eat fruits from the hands of a few selected people.
She was released into the wild 18 years ago along with 6 other juvenile Orang-Utans – they all disappeared into the thick forest but Jackie comes back without fail.
She loves human attention and beetlenut!
For those that know photography, this was taken at 48 mm focal length – so you can imagine how close I was.
Will update as soon as I can. Enjoy the holiday today.

That’s a nice shot. Well done.
I would be terrified if I’m too close. Orang utans can break you easily.
I’m curious, why is that Jackie’s hair is black? Aren’t they supposed to be brown-orange?
Using
amos: Thanks – Jackie is more orange/brown actually – the shot is somewhat desaturated as the original colour was very vivid and I found it detracted from the picture.
Using
Nice pic. I’ve never got that close to an orang-utan before.

u got so close to jackie. trying to poison jackie with your lense?
who knows the next time i visit, jackie will be shooting me using 50mm
Using
48mm on APS-C, you mean? Or having the 1.5x crop factored in? (Whoa.)
The desaturation makes for a nice Kong effect.
Using
Angie: Yah it’s an amazing experience.
jon: Thanks! I really like it too.
Dabido: Hahahha resemblance is there.
acidict: Thanks
cindy: Yah…maybe that might happen.
Albert: Yah, without crop factor in, still pretty close tho (72mm equiv).
Using
nice shot, keep up the good work =).Was photoshop used?
Using
Ds: Yah I use it for every shot as I use Adobe Camera RAW to convert, then Photoshop to sharpen and add contrast.

Hello! Could you tell me where you spent the night when you were in Sandakan/Sepilok? I’m planning an orang utan trip in June 2008.
Using
EF: We stayed one night in Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, one night in Sepilok Jungle Resort (walking distance to the Orang-Utan Sanctuary) and then one night in Hotel Sandakan to check out the town.

Hey, that’s Jackie alright. I went as close as you did until a long-tailed macaque came to steal the spotlight. Nearly got bitten too. Love the photo
