Say NO To Adsense/Adverts On Personal Blogs

If you've noticed I've removed all the Adsense from this blog!

Say no to Adverts for personal blogs, yah!

I've also moved the referal stuff down to the bottom of the sidebar so it's no in your face anymore, I do support Firefox so I might move that one back up.

We'll see.

You can use this button to support the cause ;)

No Adverts!

You can copy and paste this code to get the banner:

Anyway...now it's gone I noticed the pages load much faster, and it looks neater of course.

I did it as an experiment anyway, it didn't make much money, I can show you exactly how much in fact.

Adsense - ShaolinTiger.com

Yeah this is over almost 2 years, kind of sad eh.

(No this is not against the Adsense TOS - As long as you don't show eCPM or CTR you are ok).

You agree not to disclose .........(b) click-through rates or other statistics relating to Site performance in the Program provided to You by Google; .......However, You may accurately disclose the amount of Google’s gross payments to You pursuant to the Program

So yeah you can say I've been there and done that.

I think personal blogs shouldn't be polluted with ads, that's why I never put anything else in here like Chitika or similar, I just have Text Link Ads which I'll keep as they are very unobtrusive.

If you want to make money from blogging, get a domain, and create a real blog on one subject with niche content and real quality articles.

If you blog about a variety of subjects and personal stuff, don't bother with ads as it's just annoying and slows your site down.

It doesn't really earn anything, this money I earned from this domain is barely enough to pay for the hosting.

Personal blogs are destined to make little or no money due to the way contextual advertising works. If your subjects are too scattered your ads won' be properly targeted so you'll get all the non-targeted adverts which have horribly low eCPM rates.

So do everyone a favour and take the 3 embedded adblocks out of your posts and get a real job, or make a real nice blog if you do want to make money from the intrawebnets.

Anyway don't be a sucker, remove your ads.

BTW do keep commenting please, it makes me so happy :D That means comments that are relevant to the topic, not just random shite :P

Cheque From Adbrite

The earnings are shitty compared to Adsense, and well it costs almost as much to clear the cheque as the cheque is worth..

But what to do, I banked it anyway.

Adbrite Cheque

I took Adbrite off all my sites because it earnt virtually nothing.

Bring on more Adsense! (Adsense earnings are lower this month though, sien!)

Firefox Adsense Plugin/Extension - New version 0.8

I've been using this extension for a long time, since around 0.4, but my Adsense balance was always about $12USD so I didn't really bother about it much.

My Adsense earnings from February 1st 2005 - August 31st 2005 were a massively pitiful $11.05, yeah 7 months Adsense income.

During September, I started learning more about Adsense and tried my hand at it, I'm doing a little better now, so the Adsense Extension comes in even more useful to track my clicks, page impressions and earnings.

A new version just came out and it's a lot better than the previous series, it has a lot of options and even displays the total average you are getting per click.

Google Adsense Extension

The latest version added:

Version Notes:

  • Added the ability to track referals.
  • Added “since last payment” view.
  • Added RPC (Revenue per click).
  • Added the ability to configure all mouse clicks.
  • Added “Update Now” option to mouse clicks.
  • Now pull all data from the “overview” page, this allows collecting data for
all three products from one page, but makes it impossible to group by page or
ad data as well as losing the “all time” view.

You can find the Adsense Extension Here.

I was surprised this time aswell, Google sent my cheque on January 26th, and I received it on February 4th, wow, some efficiency in the Malaysian postal service..Last time it took about 3 weeks to arrive, and as they said, it took 5 weeks to clear, so 4-6 weeks was accurate.

Adsense Referral Links are a Waste of Web Space

Google recently changed the way their Adsense Referral program making it even more unlikely that you'll actually get any money.

You've probably seen the adverts around something like this:

Previously there was no limit, if someone signed up to Adsense under you and made $100, you would also receive $100.

Now Google has imposed a limit of 90 days, so the novice webmaster has to make $100 within 3 months, or you don't get anything.

That's pretty unfair, that means someone who is new to Adsense, has to average more than $1 a day in their first 3 months..hardly anyone does that.

Even for experienced people that might be quite difficult, I am making more than $1 a day (just about) on some sites after 4-5 months of learning about Adsense.

You can check the terms and conditions, the new clause is as follows:

An AdSense referral is counted when a publisher, who has never previously enrolled in AdSense, creates an account and earns at least $100.00 within 90 days of sign-up. The referred publisher must be eligible for payment to qualify as a successful referral.

Adsense Referral

Plus the fact if you aren't using Adsense already, it's unlikely that you wouldn't know about it, and if you didn't it's unlikely you'd straight away be able to make $100 within the first 3 months.

I've taken the Adsense Referral Adblocks out of all my sites from the static locations and just left the Firefox ones, not to make money but because I support Firefox!

I'll leave the Referral blocks inside any posts they are in, as they aren't using up real estate.

Another point is that they didn't announce this or tell anyone about it, they just kind of silently slipped the new rule in.

What happened to not being evil?

Jensense also mentioned this.

There is also a rumour from a Portuguese user that they have heard the complaints and have increased the time, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Google AdSense Team just sent me a mail message (in Portuguese, otherwise I’d copy/paste it here) saying that Google “take users comments very seriously and so they decided to change the 90 days referral window to 6 months”.

They also mentioned that, as of today, we still see the 90 days message in our referral page, but the decision was taken.

I won't be putting it back up anyway, I've yet to have a sign-up.

LiewCF Paying For Traffic to His Blog?

I was browsing PPS last night and came across thia advert for LiewCF and his 'Tech' blog.

LiewCF Adwords

I've noticed more and more lately bloggers and informational sites paying to get traffic, from the statistics I've seen it will actually make them money.

For example they can spend $5 on Adwords and get back $7 in Adsense, it's not a great deal of profit, but if you are already making money from your site it is a way to increase it.

I would wonder though if this is actually working for LiewCF as his advert isn't very eye catching or well worded and it's quite ironic that it shows up on PPS because I'd say 90% of the people there already know about him, so any that click the ad are just costing him money, but he's not gaining new readers.

What do you think about this?

Will will be seeing ads from Lillian Chan showing up in our Adsense blocks any time soon?

I already saw Adbrite ads for Hottest Malay Girl on Kenny's site and now LiewCF is there too.

Hottest Malay Girls

I had a feeling the Hottest Malay Girl was Kahsoon at first, but I don't think it is.

I considered using Adwords for some of my other sites but I haven't yet, I'm doing some campaigns with Adwords at work now though, so I'll see the progress.

Pretty interesting technique for the 'probloggers' I think.

My early Christmas Present?!

I got home from Brunei to find my mailbox jam packed full, one of the things inside was this.

Shame it's gonna take 4-6 weeks to clear and costs me 80 ringgit to bank in..

Might actually get the money by my birthday..

What's that shit about honestly.

4-6 weeks to clear, plus I gotta pay what exactly?

60 bucks courier charge
11 bucks processing fee
6 bucks government tax

Something like that anyway..

Not that bothered though as it's passive income, I don't claim to be a pro-blogger.

And no, don't worry it's not from this site, it's from some others ;)

I think personal blogs loaded with ads suck, I have a few here but they were more to get out of the Google Sandbox than anything else, and there isn't even any on the front page at all.

I think this site has earnt about $50USD since February. Barely enough to cover the hosting.

Oh well, Merry Xmas to me :)

I bought a load of stuff today, so might blog about that tommorow.

As for now I'm off to Qbar to bug FA about dancing naked on a table.

LOLPLZ!

BTW Check out the comments from random flickr users on XiaXue and her LOVELY bikini puke I mean pic.. HERE.
