Removing The Safety Blanket – Shaving Your Head!

If you knew me or have seen me around, you would have noticed my hair was thinning (although it is hard for most people to see because I’m 6’5″ – rather tall).

It was becoming a bit of a comb-over to be honest.

You can see the tragedy that was my hair in these pics:

In Cameron Feb 2009.

Hennessy Artistry June 2008.

Hennessy Artistry

It was bad even way back in 2004.

Diving

It was starting to get PRETTY thin on top.

I finally listened to everyone, and decided to shave it all off. Get rid of the security blanket so to speak, it turned out to be a liberating experience. I had some Wahl hair clippers I bought from Argos in UK last year.

I got home one night and I decided, ok I’m just going to do it!

I grabbed the clippers and started shaving, I started about grade 7 and gradually got shorter.

Hair Shave

I looked like this half way thru, kinda scary eh.

Scary

I kept hacking away.

Shaving

I eventually got down to about grade 3, which I did the whole thing with.

Grade 3

There was a LOT of hair.

Hair

And well that was that, my hair was GONE! I went to the barber a while later and got it tidied up (grade 3 still). It so much lower maintenance now, don’t have to worry about my hair ‘style’ when I wake up or before I’m going out to an event or something.

Save money on shampoo too!

I stopped shaving my face that day too to experiment with some facial hair (May 2009), and I started getting it shaved at grade 1 (very close shave).

This was my new look and beard in June 2009.

New Look

The beard grew considerably, and has changed again. Will blog about that soon!

I try to keep my head shaved clean. I’ve been doing it for a long time… since I was in Iraq in 2003 I think. It was more convenient for me there because we didn’t have much in the way of washing facilities. Now I just do it because it’s what I’ve become accustomed to.

In fact… I’m about due for another good shaving.

What I’m still trying to figure out is the whole facial hair thing. I’ve got plenty of it. I just don’t know what to do with it really. Can’t have a beard in the US military so always shaved it off.

I’m lovin’ the new beard…it’s different, shaven down the middle. Goes well with the hair (or lack of it). πŸ˜‰

Definitely better bald. Plus, you don’t have to think about thin hair. πŸ™‚

And don’t go growing a thick beard la! LOL!

I always have this impression that if you grow a beard, you will lose hair on top. I wonder if its scientifically proven. hehe

Save on shampoo. Almost don’t need to wait for it to dry. Welcome to my world. πŸ˜€

I save on shampoo too. My problem, though, is that razors cost 29 SGD per 8 pack here and I grow a thick beard that requires lots of shaving, plus shaving my head… Well it adds up.

Brad F.: Haven’t gone clean shaved on top yet, may well try it out tho. Check this out for inspiration: Beard Types.

kaswira: Can you give me one?

Huai Bin: Yah the whole bushy beard thing was a bit wild. Went for something more stylish.

KY: Haha I did when it was thick, not much left now though so very maintenance free!

Danny Foo: Yah always had fine hair which tends to end up thin, so no more worries now. I did grow a thick beard just for fun.

Wan Kidd: Haha cool, good it’s fierce!

    quartermiler: Thanks!

xes: Well it’s logical, but also not really. Cos you’re facial hair is growing same rate if you have hair on top or not. It’s just if you let it grow out or not.

Peter Tan: Yah so maintenance free!

Brad. F: Yah, I’m considering an electric shaver…Mach 3 Turbo blades are getting expensive.

Myhorng: No need la can borrow mine, or go Indian barber and kau tim for RM10.

    Wow….So handsome! and GAY! xD

  14. Brad F. October 18, 2009 at 6:08 pm #

Unless you mean gay as in happy, then I disagree. I think the shaved look is great!

By the way, I showed that beard chart to my wife and she thought it was cool. Thanks!

    Tony Wan: Er ok!

Brad F.: Thanks, yah the chart is great plenty to choose from. If you Google there’s actually one guy trying to do them all.
