Flickr Banned and Youtube Blocked in Dubai

Argh, how are office workers supposed to be unproductive with these two landmark sites blocked!

Apparently Flickr has nude pictures and can be considered a dating site which is against the principles of the country..

Flickr Blocked

Argh can’t upload my pictures to flickr, can’t do shit…bored, can’t browse flickr, can’t check my comments..

Want to watch some videos on Youtube? In Dubai? Hah! Think again..

Youtube…blocked..

YouTube Blocked

Dubai has a big thing against social networking sites and sites that encourage user interaction..

Apparently the UAE had a really big community of flickr users and a lot of them liked to post nude pics of themselves…this led to the ban.

Flickr and YouTube are apparently inconsistent with the religious, cultural, political and moral values of the United Arab Emirates.

Along with Boingboing, Skype which is also blocked..

They actually put people in prison for trying or succeeding to avoid the proxy…so I probably won’t be trying that.

Anyway other than that…it’s fucking hot here, the hotel is shit and the shower doesn’t work properly, the cleaners put the aircon to 11 degrees everyday when they clean the room so when I walk in it’s like the artic.

And it’s hot.

Yah.

is this the great wall of dubai or only practised by individual companies/airports/etc?

You got into Dubai like 2 times in no time. Guess they really like visitors. Pity the internet’s censored. I guess they could block proxies too, so there’s no point in finding a favourite one.

Ya kar? I’m suprise …isn’t dubai very cosmo. I heard they’ve got multi coloured hookers from all over the world to service the locals and expats? I suppose its better to get the real thing rather than view and have a dog on the bone…

so i’m assuming hot*nekkid* hunnies.com and porntube.com is ALSO banned?

  10. ShaolinTiger September 10, 2006 at 3:38 pm #

steelrage: Hehe, can you afford them?

KY: It’s countrywide, banned at the government level.

James: Yah poor me..yah all the proxies I tried are blocked..sucks. Quite a few other things I’ve browsed into are blocked too.

Aunty Ningku: Well yah it’s united nation of hookers here, but that’s the same wherever there are lot’s of businessmen with money. It’s not very cosmo though, after all it’s still an Arabic country.

simon: Yah even ‘dating’ sites are banned..

Haha, that means friendster and myspace are blocked for sure too? What about sites like Digg and slashdot?

  12. ShaolinTiger September 10, 2006 at 6:18 pm #

Izuan: Thankfully for my sanity Digg and /. still work, I don’t really read Boingboing regularly so that’s no big loss…but no Flickr is killing me! And I already have Skype installed luckily so no need to go to the site heh. No Youtube is a bit boring too. Yah Orkut, Myspace etc are all out, Friendster still works tho strangely.
