So in January 2016 I headed down to Singapore for Applehops Beer Bash, celebrating their 2nd anniversary.

Obviously being in Singapore for a few days, I needed somewhere to stay! For the first couple of days I stayed at Village Hotel Changi which is a beautiful peaceful retreat on the North East coast of Singapore (near the airport).

It’s a beautifully breezy area, great for cycling and you can even take a daytrip to Pulau Ubin. It’s a really good choice for Singaporeans looking for a staycation as well as they have activity packages a great buffet lunch and it’s well away from the hustle/bustle of the city.

There’s also a pretty nice food court (famous for nasi lemak) right across the road (Changi Village Hawker Centre).

Someone was excited to get to the hotel of course..

Village Hotel Changi

It was quite a drive to Singapore, as I followed Google maps and for some reason it took some weird arse way to a ferry terminal that I didn’t even know existed..that didn’t have a ferry until 8am the next morning (Tanjung Belungkor).

So yah, we were really glad to be there!

Village Hotel Changi

It’s a nice, bright spacious room with a big comfy bed, a writing desk, a small sofa/seating area, a tv a minifridge and a bathroom with both shower and bathtub (great for a baby).

Village Hotel Changi

The sitting area is especially useful for us, dealing with a rambuntious toddler who we need to sit down sometimes to drink his milk, eat some snacks etc. Overall a pretty child friendly hotel.

Service was really good too.

We had the buffet lunch at the hotel which is quite good value for money and is available every day with a broad variety of local and international delights. All the way from stuff like porridge with all the trimmings.

Village Hotel Changi

Which includes yau char gwai of course – one of Liam’s favourites!

Village Hotel Changi

To Sushi – one of our favourites!

They all have a good mix of other stuff, roast and grilled meats and seafood, pasta, salad and much more.

Village Hotel Changi

The absolute highlight for us at Changi Village was the pool, the main reason we went there, located on the 8th floor with a stunning view of the straits.

Village Hotel Changi

It was super breezy, fresh and totally relaxing – we spent hours up there. Even though it rained, we stayed in the pool anyway! Of course Liam absolutely loved it too, and there was a nice jacuzzi area too with a ledge for him to play on.

Village Hotel Changi

I was literally late for my event because I had too much fun hanging out in the pool haha, was sooo relaxing. Totally recommend it.

Village Hotel Changi

So overall I think Village Hotel Changi is a good spot for a getaway, especially to get out of the city, or as a quick stop-over near the airport. It may be a little far (around 30 mins drive) if you want to do a bunch of stuff in the city – but even then, the pool is kinda worth it!

It also has a nice, convenient spacious car-park which is included in the room price. Important to me as I was driving. Plenty of good food around within walking distance, shops, convenience stores and yes, there are Uber cars around there.

After that we moved to Village Hotel Katong, which is still on the East coast but much further in and nearer to the city.

This is an exceptionally beautiful hotel with a Peranakan influence, it feels rather swanky and is super cool as it’s basically on top of a small shopping Mall (which gives you access to a big grocery store, a few restaurants and hipster coffee).

Village Hotel Katong

The style is a really nice mix of modern slick aesthetics combined with Peranakan zest and details, it’s really, really nice.

You can see the details in the tiles which were placed around the room, like on the luggage stand and in the bathroom.

Village Hotel Katong

Really nice room to hang out in, watch TV, drink some craft beers, wonder downstairs for some Katong Laksa, grab some stuff from the grocery store under the hotel and just chill.

Village Hotel Katong

And yah, Liam found his favourite thing..the telephone haha. He loved the room too.

Village Hotel Katong

Definitely looking forwards to visiting there again!

Village Hotel Katong

Honsetly didn’t stay there long enough to really take it in, I’d love to stay there longer as it’s a nice area and a really beautiful hotel. It does have a small pool at the back, but we didn’t really have time to check it out.

Now I’m feeling like it’s time for another trip to Singapore! I need to pick-up some stuff anyway, check out the newly opened Mikkeller Singapore and well, have a holiday! Probably when we get back from Europe we’ll head back over in June/July.

See yah soon Singapore!

It’s been a busy couple of weekends, especially for my car – it probably did 1000km or more for both of the last two weekends. With the previous weekend being a long 5-6 hour drive to the jetty for Lang Tengah and back again and the past weekend being a much faster 3 hour drive to Singapore and back.

It was a multi-purpose trip, in part to do some paperwork stuff and in part to get a food processor of awesome.

Singapore is an interesting place, I was never very fond of it really – a lot of people always ask me why I didn’t choose to live there instead of Malaysia. You can earn more there, there’s less crime, better shopping, more pork, cheap booze and so on.

But for me it’s to regimented, the people are too samey, there’s no good dirty back alley street food. I realise now that you can really enjoy Singapore when you have more to spend, the good found is on the upper end of the scale, the best shopping is in the branded zone and the booze is cheap(er) but still the better stuff is costly.

So if you’re earning plenty of SGD there, it’s probably a pretty decent place to live (if you enjoy shopping, booze and good quality food). However you if you like the country-side, driving out of town, driving up to Genting or anything similar – forget it.

Singapore is just a large city, that’s all. There’s shopping malls, well dressed people and of course MRT stations everywhere.

Singapore

We had a good time there tho, we didn’t do much shopping really (or well our shopping was very focused – Food Processor, G-Shock watches from Bencoolen and booze from Mei-d-ya in Liang Plaza). We also had an extensive list of food to eat from our friends (a LOT were Ramen).

And of course a trip to Singapore isn’t complete without a night roaming around the riverside and a few pints at Brewerkz.

Singapore Riverside

We were there at Liang Plaza anyway to eat Tampopo (some famous Black Pig Shabu Ramen – delicious) – so it was perfect to have a stroll after that.

There’s nothing quite like the Riverside in Malaysia, I think Straits Quay in Penang is trying to get that kind of vibe – but the last time I went it was still pretty empty to it didn’t have that buzz yet.

In a way it reminds me of Changkat too with the endless stretch of restaurants and bars, Changkat is sorely missing a microbrewery though and places selling foreign beer on tap! As a side note, Hooters was doing amazingly well and has a massive space now!

Riverside Clarke Quay Singapore

It was a good night out, had a few beers and some hot wings at Brewerkz before heading back to our decidely dodgy Hotel 81 on Lorong 18 (yes it was full of whore houses).

We even spotted Street Performer Willie on the bridge entertaining a large audience.

Street Performer Willie in Singapore

There were youths lining the bridge walls too with bottles of vodka and mixers, I guess open bottle/public drinking laws haven’t hit Singapore yet.

I have to admit I had a very enjoyable trip and I’ll probably be heading back down to sample more Singaporean delights (and buy back more Kilkenny draught in a can) sooner than expected!

So this weekend was a busy one, Saturday was Nuffnang Music Bash ’09 (pictures for that coming soon) and then back to sleep and up at 10am next day for a road trip down to Singapore.

We stopped at Malacca on the way for some lunch – awesome chicken rice balls at Hoe Kee (far far far better than the other two commercialised joints further up, their Asam fish head was nice too).

Chicken Rice Balls

Excuse the camera phone quality pics 😛 (I have no compact camera now, and I sure as hell wasn’t lugging the SLR to a concert.)

After that it was off to Jonker 88 for the Baba Cendol – one of the best things in the world!

Baba Cendol

We considered some popiah on the way out, but didn’t have the stomach space or the time for it.

It rained terribly after that and the traffic through Johor was quite terrible.

We reached the stadium just in time to grab the tickets (there wasn’t a big queue thankfully), run down the road, grab a super speed Subway (with REAL ham and bacon) and then back to the stadium.

The concert started promptly at 8:15pm and it was AWESOME! It started off a bit slow as most people aren’t so familiar with the songs from the newer albums – like this one ‘The Shock Of The Lightning’.

But they rocked out with some real classics later on and it was intense.

Cigarettes and Alchohol is always a crowd-pleaser.

You can’t beat a bit of Morning Glory.

And of course a beautiful sing-a-long version of Don’t Look Back in Anger acoustic style.

It was completely awesome, apart from reaching back home at 3am and getting up for work the next day – not so awesome.

All videos and pics taken with Nokia E71. The sound on the videos is surprisingly clear without distortion.

A very interesting trip, that’s the end of Singapore for now.

I recommend viewing the full set here and even better watch the Slideshow:

Singapore Set – Slideshow.

I’m not sure what’s coming next, I’ve got a few more from UK I think and I went to the Eye on Malaysia last night, the fireworks are fantastic.

I recommend it to everyone, I heard the fireworks finish on February 2nd, so catch it while you can. The information is a bit sketchy though so I’m not sure.

Don’t forget to comment!

A while ago I was in Singapore so I decided to head to the famous Bugis Street market, and on from that to Little India as it’s nearby.

Again I was limited to a 50mm and a 90mm prime at this time as I had no other lenses!

Bugis Street is an explosion of colours, smells and tastes with all kinds of things on sale and all kinds of characters selling them.

I managed to capture a little bit of the hustle bustle and what was going on there, a little bit of street photography 🙂

This is the famous Bugis Street market, always busy..

The night shots!

Following on the from the last series, I got the rest of the pics done and uploaded so here they are, again all shot with two prime lenses 🙂

It was the end of a hot and sweaty (and extremely hazy day), the lanterns weren’t as impressive as the Bukit Jalil Lantern Festival in Malaysia. Malaysia Boleh!

There’s plenty to see (and more importantly photograph) in Singapore Chinatown so I do highly recommend checking it out.

Temple

Guardian

Flowers

Laughing Buddha

After wondering around we had some dinner in Chinatown, not in the touristy food street..but at a small restaurant I spotted tucked away without garish bright pictures of the food.

The lady was lovely and from Malaysia, we conversed in broken MalayCantoEnglish 🙂

She mostly spoke to me in Malay and I spoke back in English.

I got the triple steamed egg thing…my mom liked it..some people have problems eating black eggs!

Food Street

No pics of the food as it was gone too quick and it was nothing special to look at, I ordered normal stuff.

After that a good wander round checking out the lanterns and lights.

Lantern

There’s LOADS of cool stuff to buy too if you are intro trinkets, cloths, music, paintings etc.

This huge lantern is right above the Chinatown MRT exit in Pagoda Street.

Do you care if I got a Giotto rocket air blower?!

The second day I went with my Mom to Chinatown as it’s hustle and bustle, bright colours and lantern festival should be interesting, along with some good food you can find there.

Well here we are, alighting at Chinatown MRT station, diving into the heart of Chinatown in Singapore at Pagoda Street and following the tourism boards recommendation for a walk around Chinatown to take in the interesting sites.

First real outing with the new D200 🙂

Singapore, a Fine City (You get fined for all kinds of things, like not flushing the toilet, eating chewing gum etc..)

Lanterns lanterns everywhere, the lantern festival at Bukit Jalil heralded nicer lanterns of course.

Yes I got out of Manila and came straight to Singapore to meet my Mom.

It’s really hard shooting with two prime (fixed) lenses, 50mm and 90mm. I tried a super wide angle lens in Peninsular Plaza yesterday too, oh I love it..10-20mm.

We tramped around Chinatown today, pretty interesting place. A bit commercialised nowadays though like everything else.
