Haven’t caught up with the music scene and I’ve having a trance trip lately, but after a fairly extended Whisky night with some friends/colleagues – we busted out some real oldskool drum & bass and some face melting dubstep.

I haven’t honestly been listening to much dubstep, so I got back into d&b and have been updating my listening tunes, discovering a bunch of artists I’ve never even heard of along the way (and some I’d forgotten long ago) plus of course discovering some of my favourites have released new albums.

Best Liquid Drum and Bass Albums

As a rule, anything by Hospital Records is good in this genre and dancefloor drum and bass in general (London Elektricity, High Contrast, Danny Byrd, Netsky, Nu:Tone, Logistics, Camo + Krooked, Fred V + Grafix & Metrik are all under them).

So I went on a little quest to find some of the Best Liquid Drum and Bass Albums from the last 5 years or so (that I’ve probably missed out on).

One of the new ones I discovered was a Hospital Records duo – Fred V + Grafix, I’d actually never heard of them before – they are garnering good reviews though and I’m especially enjoying their mellow, melodic style (some house and dubstep influences too with all kinds of other genres represented too). For example Forest Fires which starts out a whole lot like a folk song (mashing up Pendulum and Bombay Bicycle Club), but is a right banger.

Their whole album titled Recognise LP, which just came out this year is well worth a listen. Another album which has passed me by was The Agony & The Ecstasy by High Contrast which is an absolute smasher through-out. Just check out the first track, this is the Hospital Records sound I’m used to (Pendulum, Netsky, High Contrast, Logistics etc).

The next would be another artist who’s been around for a while, the album is called just ‘2’ by Netsky – and again, it delivers all the way through – superb! There is one track that just made me remember Ronald Jenkees, it’s called Jetlag Funk.

Looking back all the way to 2009 as well, Subfocus – not sure how I’d overlooked him, but his debut, self-titled album is an absolute masterpiece of music production. Brilliant stuff, epic epic drops and true dancefloor bangers.

I’m not quite sure about the 2013 Subfocus album, a little too much dance/house/dubstep-ish with a very commercial sound.

One of my FAVOURITE drum & bass albums of all time was by Calyx & Teebee and called Anatomy, I could actually listen to it over and over and over. They came out with another album in 2012 (All or Nothing) so I was pretty excited obviously. It’s fairly melodic and mostly mellow but very much influenced by dubstep aswell, thankfully it has their dark underground sound through-out. Well displayed by this track:

Brutal on the bass oh yah.

I’ve got a bunch of others which I haven’t gotten through yet, might jot down more later (Nu-Logic, Loadstar, Brookes Brothers, Kubiks, Commix, Bcee, Alix Perez etc).

Other stuff that didn’t quite hit the spot, the new Photek stuff..too housey/dubstepish for me. Bring back those clinical break-beats bro – Form & Function was legendary.

So between Christmas and New Year, I did a bit of video shooting one Sunday afternoon. It was fun, had to be all serious and shit – I got hooked up through my colleague and almost everyone in the video is a colleague of mine.

Right now it has about 38,000 views on Youtube and it’s been TV in Moldova. Here are the lyrics literally translated to English:

It’s cold again and it’s depressing again
It’s the end of the month again and you have no money
But you don’t give a fuck

About the world (that is)
Stressed from news and break ups in tv shows
From whores and gays and naked girls on www pages
U Don’t really give a fuck
About promotions in a boutique store that sells carpets

Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
With your headphones plugged in, you walk alone on the street
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
And you would like someone to feel what you feel

Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
With your headphones plugged in, you walk alone on the street
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
And you would like for somebody to be next you now

There’s some soup and sour cream back home
The bill for the electricity came at the wrong time
You switch on the TV just to get a background sound of
Three smart asses are discussing about the scandal (on the TV)
But you don’t give a fuck

You go outside
And because it’s cold you light you’re cigarette before exiting the apartment block
You put your headphones on and think whom you would like to see in the evening

Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
With your headphones plugged in, you walk alone on the street
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
And you would like someone to feel what you feel
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
With your headphones plugged in, you walk alone on the street
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
And you would like for some body to be next you now

And there are moments
And even days
When you drink (Alcohol) even if you take your pills (medicine)
Days when the chocolate ruins your diet
When at 12 at night you like to drink tea and eat “meatballs”

When you want to sleep until 9am on Mondays and Tuesdays
When you‘re shoes are dirty even though it’s not raining outside anymore
There are these kinds of days
When you don’t give a fuck

Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
With your headphones plugged in, you walk alone on the street
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
And you would like for some body to be next you now
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
With your headphones plugged in, you walk alone on the street
Dum-dum-dum, durum-du-dum-dum
And you would like for some body to be next you now

I play the father of the main protaganist, angry about eating only potatoes again (some kind of political commentary about how things are in Moldova right now).

Let me know what you think of my wifebeater 😀

One of my favourite films during my seminal raving days was Human Traffic, and it’s probably still one of my favourite films today – I can watch it over and over because it doesn’t really have a plot.

It’s just a bunch of moments that all ravers will empathise with, captured on film. There’s one seen where the character Kip is selling records and wearing a wicked T-shirt with a set of turntables on it and the words Junglist Movement. I’ve wanted that shirt since I first saw the film around 1999. Here’s the scene with the shirt:

I don’t know why, but I recently had the urge to track down the t-shirt and buy it – so that’s I did.

Red Junglist Movement T-shirt

I ordered it, and it just arrive so I’m proudly wearing it today 🙂

ShaolinTiger - Junglist Movement

It’s also bloody hot today!

And yah I’m living my dreams – with my Junglist Movement shirt! Have a good weekend all.

You should know by now, I’m a MASSIVE electronic music fan – especially Drum and Bass.

One of my favourite acts is Chase & Status, a pair of fairly nerdy looking white dudes from London – followed by Camo & Crooked and then probably Pendulum. You can imagine my surprise (and pure delight) when I saw the lineup for Future Music Festival Asia 2012 (hereon known as FMFA) included both Chase & Status and Pendulum!

Imagine my dismay later..when they scheduled them both on at the same time…WTF? Seriously – there’s 2 DnB acts on in the WHOLE festival and 5 different stages – and they put them both on AT THE SAME FUCKING TIME. Pendulum was on for 2 hours (8.30pm-10.30pm), but was only a DJ set and Chase & Status was LIVE (8.30pm-9.30pm)! So yah!

We headed there around 7pm just as the sun was going down, I got my best junglist massive outfit on – ready to rinse out.

Junglist Massive

Yah my cap should have been Burberry, but I don’t have one – so neh. We chilled for a while first whilst the sun went down, grabbed a couple of beers and kicked back on the grass.

FMFA2012 Sunset

We were waiting quite a while, as the schedule seem to have gotten knocked back quite a while.

Waiting for something to happen..

The first act we caught was the rather late starting Sneaky Sound System, they were really really good live – the singer was incredible (both her vocals and her stage presence). Her name is Connie Mitchell and man can she move.

Sneaky Sound System - Future Music Festival Asia (FMFA) 2012

We were a fair way back at that point and it was a nice warm up to the festival, but really I was waiting for 8.30pm for Chase & Status to come on..they were delayed though and only started after 9 I think. I was happy to see the DJ decks rolled off and a full drum kit exposed with guitars and all sorts coming out – this meant 1 thing..

Chase & Status were going to be playing their music live! We headed right down into the chaos at the front, right next to the fence.

Chase & Status FMFA2012

Yah drum and bass played live on a drumkit – you can’t beat that shit seriously. They started out banging straight away with insane Dubstep and Drum n Bass tracks assaulting us non-stop. This is how sweaty you look after dancing and jumping to awesome dnb for half an hour or so.

Me & Kim at FMFA 2012

Then a female vocalist came out to perform Heartbeat and Time, I didn’t really catch her name – I think it was Holly something. Time was mind-blowing live.

Chase & Status FMFA2012

Here’s a short clip of it, apologies for the sound quality but the camera was clearly overwhelmed by the epic basslines. Listen to the original here.

The moshpit in front was getting pretty mad too, I wanted to join in…but I was scared I’d crush them all. This was during Fool Yourself – listen to the original here.

I didn’t take all that many pics or videos because I was busy mashing it up, junglist stylee. Their set finished at 10:08pm – it was legendary.

Chase & Status FMFA2012

After that we headed down to the other stage to catch the end of Pendulum, it was a DJ set though so it’s not the same – but Pendulum does have some mad tunes (like Watercolour). I would have liked to get down the front and mash it up for an hour – but due the timing – it wasn’t happening.

Just hung out at the back and caught the last 2-3 tracks he dropped.

Pendulum FMFA2012

It was ok, wondered around for a while – went to see Tinie Tempah – thought he was shite and left – headed back down to wait for Chemical Brothers to start..

There was a whole lot of confusion down there, no lights, no spotlight on the stage, no intro, no wording on the backdrop, no emcee – no one actually had any idea if Chemical Brothers had started playing or not.

And honestly whoever was playing was pretty shit, the music was meh. We hung around for half an hour or so, then headed off home. I heard Cosmic Gate and Wombats were good – but I wasn’t going to wait around through all that monotony till 2-3am to catch them both.

Got back in time for some awesome frog porridge in SS2 then off home to bed.

Honestly I would have driven all the way there, paid and gone home happily after an hour just to see Chase & Status live – it was that good. I hope I see them again…soon!
