Hidden Lives – The Man Whose Arms Exploded – Steroids & Synthol

Some say its a form of Body dysmorphic disorder or BDD, these guys always think they are too small, not buffed enough, not big enough…they turn to steroids and other stuff like Synthol (Site Enhancement Oil) just to make them look bigger.

Gregg Valentino

Site Enhancement Oil (SEO) or Synthol is a liquid substance, usually a mixture of oils, used by a few bodybuilders to increase the apparent size of some muscles. The effects of SEO are purely and solely cosmetic. It is injected either under the skin or between the muscle fibers.

You can find some more freaked up people using Synthol here.

Weird stuff, stay away from Steroids, lest you might get bitch tits, roid rage and balls the size of peanuts.

In the case of Gregg Valentino, the freak….he has the biggest arms in the world and they are damn ugly, this guy has napoleon syndrome AKA short man syndrome.

Quite possible the most hated man in body-building.

Gregg Valentino

Valentino was featured in “The Man Whose Arms Exploded”, a TLC documentary highlighting the use and abuse of steroids. In the documentary he recalls his misuse of steroids, namely not taking precautions necessary to prevent infection. Consequently he eventually came down with a very serious infection of his right biceps. After failed attempts to drain the hematoma himself, using the same needles he used to inject his steroids, and “filling two glasses with blood and pus” he sought emergency medical treatment. Ultimately his arm was saved, at the cost of a significant reduction in the size and shape of the biceps.

There’s a very interesting interview with Gregg at T-nation here:

The Most Hated Man in Bodybuilding

You can watch the whole “The Man Whose Arms Exploded” here in 5 parts (approx 45 minutes), it’s truly fascinating:

Kharu – Summer Rain & Bikini Star

This is what you’ve been waiting for isn’t it?

A treat for you all on Friday!

The final and last set from Kharu – you can look forwards to some from Krystal soon as I’ve gotten these out of the way.

It was pretty tough shooting this last set as the clock was ticking closer to midday (the worst time for photography) so the light was getting pretty harsh, I tried my best to use the shadows and play with the light, I’m reasonably happy with the results!

Why ShaolinTiger – What’s in a Name?

A while back I asked for open questions on this blog and got some interesting ones, I’ll start out with the most frequently asked questions.

The most common of course is “Why ShaolinTiger? – Where did the name come from” and other similar questions of how did I choose it, do I like martial arts and so on.

I chose this name when I first joined the monkeys and tubes that make up the Interwebnets back in 1996 when I went to University in Liverpool.

Before that I didn’t own a computer, didn’t need a nickname and knew virtually nothing about the net. When I first got to uni they were still using Windows 3.11 and Yahoo! was king of search (makes me feel kinda old)..

And I’d heard about this thing called Internet Chat, so I chucked it into Yahoo! and out came mIRC, so I downloaded it and connected to DALnet #chatzone…that’s the start of a whole other story.

Anyway, the point is to chat you need a nick, preferably a cool one…so I knocked my head trying to think up something.

At the time I was studying Kung Fu at the local univeristy club, Hung Gar Kuen to be exact – yes the same style from the family of Wong Fei Hung.

Hung Gar Kuen

It’s known as a style based on Tiger and Crane forms – Character Taming the Tiger Fist and Tiger Crane Paired Form Fist.

It also has some stuff on 5 elements and iron wire fist, it’s a style very much based on stance. My sifu was second generation Shaolin and spent 2 years just doing horse stance before he even did any basic moves. Sadly in the Western World such slow learning wouldn’t stick so things were rapidly accelerated.

I used to really enjoy sparring hard and the blood rushing to your head as the adrenaline kicks in.

Hung Gar was good, and was my second favourite training experience after Wing Chun.

I’ve always meant to talk more about martial arts..but I never have, is anyone even interested?

So back to my nick….. ShaolinCrane didn’t sound very cool, so I went for ShaolinTiger seen as though I was studying Shaolin Kung-Fu and it was Tiger and Crane style.

And that was that…let’s not talk about the Yahoo! e-mail address I ended up with as shaolintiger was taken even back then in 1996.

My Dog can beat up YOUR Dog – and a Ripped Cow

This is nuts.

People mistake her for a pitbull with a pinhead, but Wendy the whippet is one rare breed.

So rare that the Central Saanich dog recently graced the New York Times. She also had several of her photos shown on The Today Show, all because of a rare genetic mutation that has led to her being the Incredible Hulk of dogs.

Wendy is a 27-kilogram rippling mass of muscle. Forget the so-called six-pack stomach: Wendy has a 24-pack. And the muscles around her neck are so thick, they look like a lion’s ruff.

Roid Dog

You can read about Big Wendy here.

Interestingly, whippets with the homozygous deletion also had an unusual body shape, with a broader head, pronounced overbite, and shorter legs. These whippets have also been called “bully whippets” by the breeding community due to their size, but not their temperament.

Apparently it’s a genetic mutation (Myostatin) and this is known as a bully whippet – you can read more on Wiki here.

And then check out this stacked cow.

Movie Review – Children of Men – Post Apocalyptic

Children of Men

“Children of Men” envisages a world one generation from now that has fallen into chaos on the heels of an infertility defect in the population. The world’s youngest citizen has just died at 18, and humankind is facing the likelihood of its own extinction. Set against a backdrop of London torn apart by violence and warring nationalistic sects, “Children of Men” follows an unlikely champion of Earth’s survival: Theo (Owen), a disillusioned ex-activist turned bureaucrat, who is forced to face his own demons and protect the planet’s last remaining hope

Wow, I can’t believe I missed this one. Picked it up after some of the Ocean’s 13 crew mentioning that Clive Owen was the man and everyone should see Children of Men.

I can’t say I’ve even heard of this movie before that…and I have no idea why.

I was somewhat expecting a depressing drama kind of thing…but this, this is a stunning film, definitely the best post-apocalyptic rendition of London, rather than the mini-USA rendered in V for Vendetta. It’s banged straight in at #125 on IMDB’s Top 250 Movies!

It somewhat loosely based on a 1992 novel of the same name by P.D. James, I haven’t read the book so I can’t really judge on that part.

Clive Owen is really good as Theo and he is at his drunken, ruffled, depressed best he holds the movie all through along with relative newcomer Claire-Hope Ashitey as Kee.

Clive Owen

It certainly is a fast paced thriller, it slows down at time for some character development and introduction of gems like Michael Caine’s pot smoking hippy friend and the old-flame Julianne Moore.

The film doesn’t let you go with the bombing at the beginning all the way through the twists and turns to the epic 30 minute battle at the end. It has many facets aswell as a socio-political commentary, it echoes some modern events, but does so subtly enough that it does distract from the main story. It also has some nice references to pink floyd, the current immigration problems in various countries (especially UK), homeland security and a few others.

The soundtrack is something else aswell, totally nuts.

Film wise, it’s beautiful shot with some extremely long continuous takes adding to the tension and most of the film was shot in natural light giving it an extremely realistic feel. It reminds me in some ways of 28 days laterthe sequel of which I missed due to the fact they decided to only show it at 3pm.

It’s so un-Hollywood as well, like the scene with the blood on the camera, Hollywood would have cleaned that shit off.

I’m really glad to see people still can make good, moving films…

I suggest everyone go see this, NOW.

I give it a resounding 9.5/10.

Malaysian Corporal Punishment – Caning

This is pretty harsh, it shows you that caning is actually really bad.

Especially 20 lashes.

He tries to a tough buy, but starts wailing after 3-4 strikes, especially when they start landing on top of each other.

Looks seriously painful.

There’s an interesting article on Wiki about Caning in Singapore, nothing similar for Malaysia though.

You better make sure you rob people before 7pm aye..

Robbery: At least six strokes. If committed after 7 p.m. and before 7 a.m: At least twelve strokes

What do you think of corporal punishment, is it a really effective deterrent?

It certainly sounds painful as described by New Zealander Aaron Cohen’s, he got six strokes in 1982 for drug-trafficking.

It’s just incredible pain. More like a burning – like someone sticking an iron on your bum. That’s the sort of feeling. Pain – just ultimate pain,” he said. ‘‘The strokes come at a rate of one a minute – but it seemed like a lifetime to me. I waited and waited for the first one and as soon as I let my breath out – ‘baam’. Afterwards my bum looked like a side of beef.

Amnesty thinks it should be banned – Malaysia: Caning should be abolished

Penang Bridge Marathon 2007 – My Side

As I mentioned a few days back, I was in Penang over the weekend taking some pictures of the Penang Bridge Marathon 2007, no I wasn’t taking part..If I was competing, I don’t think I’d be sitting here typing now, I’d be in hospital.

So props to all those that managed to finish.

It was an interesting experience, especially having to be up at 2.30am to cover the team getting ready. I was also there the day before at the sparkling new Queensbay Mall for registration.

Queensbay Mall

There was a hefty crowd gathering there.

Crowd

Careful…can you believe they ran out of numbers? And the shirts they had, for all registered members were only “S” size. Not that you would have wanted to wear it for the marathon anyway.

Movie Review – Transformers – AWESOME!

Transformers The Movie

The Earth is caught in the middle of an intergalactic war between two races of robots, the heroic Autobots and the evil Decepticons, which are able to change into a variety of objects, including cars, trucks, planes and other technological creations.

What a movie, unsurprisingly it’s got a hefty 8.6 on IMDB, I would be surprised if it didn’t get into the top 250 pretty soon.

Yah so Bumblebee wasn’t a beat up VW Beetle, get over it 🙂 The Camaro rocked it, and they did pay homage to the original, if you notice Bernie Mac tried to sell a beat up old yellow beetle to Sam in the parking lot, it was the car that Bumblebee based with his door. His character was still the same too, brave – so it’s cool with me.

Shia LaBeouf was excellent as Sam Witwicky and held the whole film well.

Shia LaBeouf & Megan Fox

And wow is Megan Fox hot, sometimes a bit distracting, not surprising that she was named #68 in FHM magazine’s “100 Sexiest Women in the World 2006” supplement.

And the Transformers themselves, WOW, that’s all I can say. They were just so real, there was no point in the movie I had to suspend my belief as it looked fake…I didn’t have to tell myself “It’s just a movie”.

They WERE real, they were there, they were hiding under Sam Witwicky’s porch, it was flawless. The interactions between the humans and the autobots were superb, sometimes funny, sometimes serious and once even cute…

But somehow it worked.

And Megatron was one hell of a badass, I understand why they couldn’t use his original a form, a gun becoming a giant monster or NBE-1 as they called him…would be a bit far-fetched.

So his new look alien-space-fighter-thingy was extremely cool.

Within the first 5 minutes the movie had your adrenaline pumping, and it didn’t let go – then the car chase….ROCKING!

Bonecrusher

I wish they had Soundwave in though, you can read some interesting Trivia here and some justifications on why they did certain things the way they did.

Starscream was totally awesome, the way he transformed was just one of the coolest things ever.

My only real gripes were the fight scenes were a little too tightly filmed, meaning the action sometimes was just a blur on the screen as you couldn’t really see what was happened. It has been like that for a while though with action movies as it tends to make the action more intense. My other point would be how easily Megatron being the all-powerful Decepticon that he is, was defeated.

Say that though, this is definitely THE best comic book movie ever, and so far, I’d say it’s definitely the best movie of the year.

I give this a laser blasting 9/10 – I guess I’ll be going to the cinema to watch it again.
