Penang – Char Kway Teow & Blue Skies

Just got back from Penang, pretty exhausted having to wake up at 2.30am for the marathon, then hardly any sleep coming back.

Quite a few things to catch up with, so just a taster first.

One of my favourite foods in the world ever..

Lorong Selamat Char Kway Teow

And a view through a sandy path, weather wasn’t fantastic.

Welcome to ShaolinTiger.Com Version 3 – Web2.0 Style

Yah so I finally got around to revamping this site, I’ve been meaning to do it for ages, I was still using WordPress 2.0.10 and hadn’t even moved up to 2.2 branch yet.

Plus I was getting really bored of the old Chinese takeaway font header and the whole thing was too cluttered, it was giving me a headache.

This theme has been up since January 1st 2006 when I switched over to WordPress from bBlog. This was v2.0 of shaolintiger.com.

Version 2

I did like it when I first did it, but moving to WordPress I think I went a bit overboard with things, especially the 10-mile long sidebars.

The loading time was a bit of a pig, it’s much faster now..I feel anyway 🙂

Previous to that I was using bBlog since October 2004 when I launched this blog, that was v1.0 of shaolintiger.com.

I still really like the simplicity of bBlog and the template I was using.

Version 1

bBlog was just getting bogged down with spam and lack of updates…that’s why I jumped camp to WordPress, I can’t say I’ve regretted it at all. I feel totally comfortable with WP now and power all of my sites with it.

I’ve updated all the plugins to the latest versions too, included proper tagging and a tag page.

Most of the clutter is gone including the long ass sidebars with all the useless junk. I’ve just kept a few things I like and find useful.

I’ve added a few more web2.0 widgets so you can stalk me easier and of course got a new header image.

It’s about time I updated the About Me page aswell I think.

If you notice anything wrong or something out of place, or anything missing from v2.0 let me know in a comment or via the contact form.

I Miss Those Crab Feasts…

And a lot of others things too.

I guess as life goes on things change and you tend to spend your time doing different things. For me it seems to be almost obsessive, I get totally absorbed by things and can’t stop it until I’ve gone to the highest level I can take it…which is usually pretty high.

It’s been a while since I’ve eaten crab over at that place we always used to go, it used to be a regular occasion.

Crab Feast

So did dinner together.

So did Asia Cafe before that.

So did Horus before that.

So did Diving before that.

Times do change, so do people – if it’s good or bad I’m not really sure.

I think I’ve changed too, I’m pretty sure I’m not as much of an asshole as I used to be…well at least I think so 🙂

Perhaps I’m getting old.

It’s odd how the dynamics of friendships change too when people get into relationships, especially serious ones. Or even when they move to a different area, groups of friends change, the way things are change.

Sometimes I do miss things, but then again I appreciate how things are now – I’ve found something I really love in Photography, a way to express myself again seen as though I’ve gotten bored of Hacking.

Career wise things have changed a lot too, definitely for the better.

The last company was eating me up, making me angry, burning my time, rotting my motivation – until I took back control.

I heard recently they haven’t paid the staff for the last 2 months, so it looks like I made the right decision.

Anyway my motivation is coming back and I’m starting to get things done, next thing on the list is to revamp this site…it’s underway already.

After that get my photography portfolio online, domain is already registered and the site is 50% developed, it should be coming soon..business cards are being printed for that too.

Perhaps this photography thing might lend a nice little side income.

Movie Review – Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer – Better than the first

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer

After the death of Dr.Doom the Fantastic Four think life is back to normal. Reed Richards and Sue Storm make plans to get married, but are interrupted when the Silver Surfer and Galactus show up, trying to destroy the earth and it’s up to the fantastic four to deal with them, as well as with the return of Dr. Doom.

Ah another sequel, at least it’s not another lame part 3 like Pirates and Spiderman 3 (I haven’t watched Shrek yet, and I’m looking forwards to Bourne Ultimatum).

I was that uninspired by Pirates I didn’t even review it.

It got a pretty strong 6.7 at IMDB, which is a fairly good sign.

I have to say it was definitely better than the first, but then that’s not really difficult is it? It was equally as lame, loud, brash and stupid. But then it’s Fantastic 4!

Fantastic Four

There was the right amount of bickering and family values in the gang, and the chemistry between Torch and Thing was really nice.

The whole wedding fiasco was an interesting sub-plot too and the romance wasn’t over-cookd like most recent movies. Galactus and Silver Surfer were expected to turn up sooner or later, and it was close enough to the story to keep fanboi’s happy. Although not perfect, the characters were introduced decently well.

The most surprising thing for me was the inconsistent special effects and CG which in some parts looked quite bad…for such a big budget movie, they seemed to blow everything on the Surfer himself and sometimes forget the rest.

It’s not a great movie and it’s not a bad movie, but it’s very much in the middle somewhere.

What was with Jessica Alba’s hair anyway…it looked like nylon. Screaming out for a shampoo sponsorship.

I’d give it a definitely not fantastic *groan* but worth a watch 5.5/10.

The Eye on Malaysia – Taman Tasik Titiwangsa – Fireworks!

Apologies for the lack of updates, I was away in Jakarta for a few days, then I had food poisoning…quite badly…so spent a couple of days either in bed or on the toilet.

Coincidence? I don’t think so.

Anyway, a while back I went to The Eye on Malaysia, another waste money project sponsored by the G.

I went twice, the first time I conveniently forgot my tripod, so no decent shots..but thankfully there wasn’t fireworks that night so I didn’t miss anything.

I duly went back the next weekend, and camped out an hour or so before the show, and got what I wanted!

It was my first time taking fireworks, quite an experience.

Carpark Cross with Kimberlycun and Ie-Tsen

During the weekend one of Kim’s friends was around, and I’d had an idea for a photoshoot in my head for a while..so we headed off to a carpark to take some urban portraiture.

I used artificial lighting as the carpark was very dark, mostly an SB-800 with a reflective umbrella and a naked SB-600.

Before the shoot I had a good idea of the look I wanted to achieve by using a cross-processed style.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, let me know what you think and which picture is your favourite.

Also if you are interested in any portfolio shots or have any interesting ideas for a photoshoot let me know.

The Coolest Numberplate in Malaysia

That I’ve seen anyway, in UK I’ve seen some much cooler ones. But the system allows for more variety.

Pen15

Somehow it reminds me of the unfortunately named Pen Island (https://www.penisland.net/).

A Trip to Sekinchan Paddy Fields with Shutter Asia – June 2nd

So after getting up early on Saturday morning we met at the Caltex before the trunk road to Kuala Selangor, after driving for about an hour we reached Sekinchan, just after Kuala Selangor towards Teluk Intan.

Sekinchan is known as the ricebowl of Malaysia with a lot of paddy fields and some pretty interesting fishing villages. The morning was hot, but sadly, a little hazy so the skies and light weren’t perfect.

But as always I made the best of it with my superwide 10mm lens and trust CPL.

Lone Tree

Even managed to sneak some wide angle panning in 🙂
