My Car Was Vandalised Today.

Yes indeed it was. I was confronted with this, this afternoon when I went to my car to fetch something I’d left inside…Not a nice sight for a Sunday afternoon right?

At first I thought this was a case of bad parking, my neighbour perhaps going back to home town early in the morning, made a slip on the steering wheel and rendered a dent on my beautiful car, but he would have left a note right?

But then I looked closer at the dent, the direction of the scratches and the black substance there..

It doesn’t seem to be black paint, it seems to be plastic or rubber, like that found on the bumper of a car, or on steering locks..or SHOES.

Then when I was considering the damage…what did I notice? A whole bunch of footprints on my bonnet..

Yes, those are all footprints, like this one

That’s when I got a little worried, and wondered what the hell I’d done wrong.

This was done inside my appt complex, whilst my car was parking in MY lot, overnight.

IF (and that’s a HUGE IF), this is action taken over what I’ve written on my blog, then this has massive implications for everyone.

This has entered real life.

This has cost me money.

This has really made me question.

Are people really that ignorant to take physical action against someone voicing their opinion and standing up for their rights?

The problem is, I can’t assume anything, I can’t assume to know why this happened.

Maybe it’s only because I’m white

Maybe someone saw me eating during fasting hours

Maybe I cut up some mat rempit on the road and they took revenge with their helmet on my car

Maybe I offended the burger guy when I said his chilli sauce was a little sweet

Maybe I offended my neighbour by playing Gwen Stefani too loud

Maybe I offended someone else by parking out front for 10 minutes in someone elses lot

Maybe I offended someone by writing about racism in Malaysia

Maybe I offended someone by defending KL

Maybe I offended someone by sticking up for Peter and Kimberly

So many Maybes.

At least they should have left a note, give me a clue what I did wrong. Now I have NO IDEA at all.

I wish they could just confront me directly, and we could handle this like men, not act like some fucking pussy and kick my car then run away like some sewer rat.

This action hasn’t made a difference to anything, it’s just left me feeling confused.

It won’t change my views or opinions on anything, but at least if I knew what it was about I could consider my perspective..

I am going to make a police report now, this does worry me, and I hope whatever ‘it’ is, it stops right here right now.

Hopefully it will end here, no one else will get hurt, nothing else will get damaged and we can all move on with our lives.

If you did kick my car, and you do read my blog, just let me know why, I don’t think that’s very likely, but well, there’s always a chance.

haiy, sorry to see your car man, my car was spit at when parked at J_s_o the other day, he parked to close to my car, maybe he cannot enter from the right side

  13. JoeC October 30, 2005 at 6:31 am #

It seems a very targeted vandalism. Better ask around the place, your neighbours, the guards n security cameras. Is there a history of such cases? Good hunting then.

  14. Samm October 30, 2005 at 6:58 am #

Sorry to hear that, man. Look at it from the bright side of things. Perhaps all the more reason to go get that beemer that you’ve been lusting for leh…. *winks*

  15. jerry October 30, 2005 at 7:00 am #

hey ST, how come your alarm didn’t go off? my car have this very cool alarm system which have touch sensor, which will beep once if someone like punch the car without damaging it. u should go check out any car alarm system. my car can even remote start engine…very cool stuff

  16. Lowzeewee October 30, 2005 at 7:26 am #

My father’s car has many scratches too. It’s not even some luxury car. It’s just a little Honda Accord. I think he it has more scratches than my father’s age.

Some people who do such stuff simply have nothing better to do. Well, that’s life and we have to see what we can do about it, do what we can about it and then move on.

At least it’s for something you believe in. Unless money is more important than principles :S

ul m8. i had something almost similar happen to me once, cept instead of a dent i got a long long scratch that started from my smashed brake light, all the way to my signal light. and i’m pretty sure it was the deed of a girl. in anycase, ul.

  20. Flyz October 30, 2005 at 9:49 am #

I don’t think its got anything to do with your blog lar, maybe it’s just a random act of vandalism, are there any other cars that got ‘attacked’ too?

  21. meekie October 30, 2005 at 10:03 am #

this is serious shit. gotta watch out. i don’t think its just an act of vandalism. why ur car?

it’s either they hv picked a wrong car or running towards u.
maybe wanna challenge ur kung-fu ler….

sorry to hear that n be cautious.

  22. Dabido (Teflon) October 30, 2005 at 10:15 am #

Sorry to hear about the car.

I’ve blog before on the things ppl have done to my proton. This is very similar to when I got back from work one night (1 am) and my car was only 1 month old, and some malicious BSTRD had crushed the roof in.

I assumed it was random. $4500 damage. Thank goodness for insurance.

Hope you’re insured. That looks nasty.

Anyway, hope they catch them, (though probability is against them catching anyone – but sometimes the police get lucky).

  23. Wan Zafran October 30, 2005 at 10:16 am #

Sorry to hear about that, but more importantly, dude, please be careful. Wouldn’t want to see a fellow blogger get hurt.

That being said, whoever committed this crime is stupid.

You should say things that you don’t like about people in front of them, like a real man. Don’t stab them when they’re unaware. That’s just plain cowardice.

    Here’s a few answers:

“Maybe it’s only because I’m white”

No, I don’t think so. We’ve a lot of expatriates in Malaysia what?

“Maybe someone saw me eating during fasting hours”

Eh come on, that can’t be the reason.

“Maybe I cut up some mat rempit on the road and they took revenge with their helmet on my car”

This is highly probable. I’ve done the same thing, my dad’s done the same thing, and usually they rempits will just shrug us off, but occasionally they’ll tail us back home, which is the worrying part.

“Maybe I offended the burger guy when I said his chilli sauce was a little sweet”

    No way, babe.

“Maybe I offended my neighbour by playing Gwen Stefani too loud”

Well, I don’t think that she would have damaged your car over that.

“Maybe I offended someone else by parking out front for 10 minutes in someone elses lot”

“Maybe I offended someone by writing about racism in Malaysia”

Dude, you’re just bringing out the truth. You’re a foreigner, and therefore I believe that you can write an unbiased commentary on things. If people can’t swallow the truth, let them swim in their own lies then.

“Maybe I offended someone by defending KL”

Okay, I forgot to post this comment on your blog a while back, but I said.

“Dude, you’re my hero. If I was the Malaysian Prime Minister, you’d immediately get a citizenship from me.”

“Maybe I offended someone by sticking up for Peter and Kimberly”

We know who’s wrong here, and it’s not Peter and Kimberly.

Anyway, chill dude. Please inform us of any new happenings.

  24. whazoole October 30, 2005 at 10:24 am #

cars don’t just get slapped about for no apparent reason. even druggicts on high haf enuf brain matter synchronized to at least steal a coupla bits of metal from house gates to sell. hope u find the fler and open a can of gaijin smash!

  25. Andrew Lim October 30, 2005 at 10:25 am #

This is one of the dangers of being a public blogger. When an aggressive act is committed towards you, you don’t know if it’s because of your blog. =(

Anyway this is why Singapore canes vandals. They cowardly bastards. I’m not sure if Malaysia does it too, but if they don’t, I think they should.

Hope your car gets fixed soon and this never happens again,
    Andrew

  26. panther October 30, 2005 at 10:28 am #

Are you claiming from Insurance? Did your insuance cover vandalism?
    Maybe not heh? anyway,
i am a vehicle painter,i can do it for RM150,let me know, this is not a cari makan advert, just want to help out a friend cheeers dude!

  27. ShaolinTiger October 30, 2005 at 10:52 am #

I asked some people facing where my car is parked, unsuprisingly no one saw or heard anything.

Guards were probably sleeping, and there are no cameras.

  28. ShaolinTiger October 30, 2005 at 10:54 am #

I had a look at those before, costs half the price of my car..haha

RM3000+ without the extra modules for winding the windows up, mirrors in, remote starting etc..

Using not so great alarm now, it’s decent enough, I prefered to spend my money on component speakers haha

  29. ShaolinTiger October 30, 2005 at 10:59 am #

I did have a walk all the way down the row, none of the other cars were damaged, but none of them are sports cars or luxury cars, all bog standard sedans.

Perhaps mine just caught someones eye.

  30. ShaolinTiger October 30, 2005 at 11:02 am #

I have seen it before when debt collectors and shit have whacked the wrong car, and smashed the wrong house windows..

So it could be that, that’s the problem, no note, no explanation, I have NO idea.

  31. ShaolinTiger October 30, 2005 at 11:22 am #

Not sure if it covers vandalism..and not sure if it’s worth all the trouble of going to the panel workshop etc when it’s a pretty simple job to fix.

Haha no worries, many thanks for the offer, I know someone in a workshop, so will drop you a mail if I need your services!

  32. She's Jess October 30, 2005 at 11:28 am #

This is f**ked but I also doubt that someone took offense to your posts. In Singapore maybe, cos I think there’s hardly hardcore XX fans in KL. πŸ˜‰

In any case, this still sucks. Hope insurance covers it or that the damage bill isn’t too high.

Maybe the thief wanna be tried to get into ur car but failed, and vented his frustration that way?

Satria GTi and R3s are one of the favorite targets for the grand theft auto in this country. The front seats alone are worth more than RM 1000.

Sorry that you have to go through such an ordeal…

And I bet it’s none of your fault.

It’s Malaysia. Sometimes, it takes a few years for a foreigner to see the real Malaysia. So… once again… Welcome to this pie-hole called My Beloved Country.

  49. Bryan October 31, 2005 at 1:55 am #

I’m so sorry to see this. ST.

Whoever did this is/are real coward(s)!!
Maybe you are too strong for them to confront you directly.

  50. mahagurusia October 31, 2005 at 2:24 am #

ST, sorry to hear about the mishap(?) and yes there are many maybes, so don’t jump to conclusion. It could be nothing related to what you have listed…. just bad luck and try to do something about it, like moving to s’pore or something? keke…. just kidding.

  51. Chris October 31, 2005 at 4:29 am #

Could’ve been worse. For starters, at least your car was still there. And from the looks of it, the vandals probably aren’t very bright.

You see, they could’ve keyed your car from front to back – which meant that you would have to touch up every body panel on your car (front/rear fenders + doors) – most bodywork and repair shops charge per-panel, not on the amount of damage.

Anyway, a similar thing happened to me while I was visiting a friend living in the Goodyear flats in Subang Jaya one night (One of those low-cost high-density shite flats).

Drove my dad’s car there when, while I was looking for a parking space, this idiot in a Kancil was tail-gating me, so close that I couldn’t see his headlamps from my centre rear-view mirror.

Anyway, I saw an empty parking spot and wanted to reverse in, so I stopped my car , turned on my indicator and started to reverse.

The impatient bastard kept beeping his horn for a good 5 seconds before reversing a bit (well, who asked him to stick less than 6 feet behind my car).

Anyway I parked and stayed in the car for a bit while sorting out some stuff in my bag. Got out, and saw this couple walking from a distance. I recognised them as the occupants of the Kancil and they were walking in my general direction.

Anyway, I ignored them and went to my friend’s flat. Came back a couple of hours later and found scratch marks all along the side of the car.

Now think about it… If I had taken about 20 seconds more to sort the stuff out in my bag, the asshole would’ve come face to face with me and – since my car was tinted – might have started to key it while I was still inside.

I wish that happened, so I could’ve stepped out and bashed his kneecaps with my steering lock.

  52. Intensecure October 31, 2005 at 6:19 am #

That is really shit. I hope you get an idea as to who it might have been, and then I don’t fancy their chances much…!
(Of course, if you have been playing Gwen Stefani so that others can hear it, you deserve it! /jk ;))
    No other cars touched, huh?
However, we had a few really drunk Mat Sallehs playing some kind of “street hockey” in our condo this weekend, getting real close to the cars and stuff, reall out of order ina big way. Maybe just your shit luck and not personal – I really hope so.

  56. Manuel Hung October 31, 2005 at 10:43 am #

Sorry to hear about senseless crap like this. People that vandalize stuff arent man enough to do things in person. Must be some frustrated 90 pound weakling.

I think it was most likely random though. I dont read your blog and found this topic through kimberlys site. I imagine you dont post your home address so it seems likely its random. Also could be a case of mistaken identity. Lots of silver GTI’s out there. Also could be someone who thought you were in thier space or scratched their car somewhere. Or someone who doesnt like orang putih. Perhaps someone saw a girl he liked riding in a similar car and mistook it for you. Could be so many things.

  57. Irene October 31, 2005 at 12:50 pm #

  61. victor November 1, 2005 at 4:06 am #

There was one time i did a faulty parking and accidently knocked someone’s car (a proton iswara) and i left a note with my numbers and an apology on his windshield, but the guy never called me. Probably he forgave me? Or minor scratches, no point taking further actions?
So your case is totally a concept of full deliberation, probably by some punk riding on a bike with oily, long and smelly hair, who snatches women’s handbags everyday.. Sorry to hear that dude. Being a minor in someone else’s country is a hard thing to do. But you shall persevere.

  62. lex November 1, 2005 at 8:09 am #

those touch sensor alarms dont work for me. they go off everytime there’s a thunderstorm so i ignore it. so one night while it was raining, the alarm activated & i ignored it, thinking it was thunder.the next day, i found out my window was smashed, my player stolen. damn

  63. Auntie Ning Ku November 1, 2005 at 9:06 am #

Dun worry – It happens in UK too…. Its just plain YOBBERY. Kids or ppl with nothing else better to do. Over here they puncture all the tyres with a dart on the same street for a “LAUGH”. The Victims certainly are not laughfing. One can suspect they come from the Council Block – evidence of class jealously, racism perhaps??? Living on the other side of the tracks?

  64. mervkwok November 1, 2005 at 7:31 pm #

  68. Anonymous November 2, 2005 at 4:41 pm #

    >Maybe it’s only because I’m white

white man from british…please don’t make comment like this…you make people think you are racism.

  69. lynnee November 3, 2005 at 8:29 am #

it’s cowardly. attack the car but not the owner. just because a car is powerless without the driver.

someone scratched my car before too… & placed flowerpots surrounding it, just because he/she/it didn’t like when i parked a tad too close to their gate.

& this happened in an “affluent” neighbourhood called bukit damansara. aihhh…

  70. Andreas November 6, 2005 at 4:55 am #

I just came across your post. sorry to hear that, man. But to reframe it, isn’t it better to get the car damaged than yours truly? I mean, look, a car can be repaired. What is left is the bad taste in the mouth that there was someone who violeted something that is dear to you. And that is the part that hurts most. And the feeling of helplessness, because you have nowhere to go to vent your anger, but inside of you and the screaming :bloody bastards.” It’s frustrating, but get over it, quickly. As I said, it is just a car. Have a great one, ST

  71. frostier November 7, 2005 at 2:45 am #

Sigh* it’s bad luck when this happened. I had mine too. Sigh*

  72. retired detective November 9, 2005 at 6:53 am #

that footprint is suspicious. if a person step on your car, the footprint would be at least 3 quarters of the sole length; the 3 quarters from front if its a tall man that need to lean forward to balance himself or the rear 3 quarters if he is just an average man. however, the footprint is only the midpart, without the mark of front or rear sole. it face towards the headlights and looks a left foot. judging from the angle of the left passenger tyre; this hooligan need to step up on this car but that would produce the 3 quarters that i stated above. it didnt. its impossible for someone to step on the bonnet at that spot without climbing on the car from that angle and using a left foot. the only way this footpirnt could be made is take off the left shoe and simply stomp it on the bonnet to mislead shaolintiger that this is an act of pure vandalism. the dent on the door seemed more like being hit by a hard object or car instead of kicked or smashed by a baseball bat. to produce such dent using human strength like kicking or swinging of basebal bat …though its a satria GTi; it would waken the whole neighbourhood inc. the sleeping security guard. it must have been done during daylight too if its vandalism as they tried to avoid hitting the windows which might hurt themselves or alert the alarm system.
