Movie Review - Eastern Promises - Convincing

The mysterious and charismatic Russian-born Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen) is a driver for one of London's most notorious organized crime families of Eastern European origin. The family itself is part of the Vory V Zakone criminal brotherhood.
This is a pretty gritty film, I hadn't actually heard of it - but Suanie recommended it so it must be good! It's got a strong rating of 7.9/10 on IMDB (One of the highest scores I've seen for a while).
The movie revolves around an average British girl (Naomi Watts) getting entangled with the 'Vor V Zakone' AKA the Russian Mafia - a scary bunch at the best of times. There is really quite a number of then in the UK, especially around London and they control a fair amount of territory.
It's pretty gory, violent, sexual and nasty - there's betrayal and all kinds of things going on.
Viggo Mortensen absolutely rocks it as the bad-ass Nikolai. He took method acting to the max, he really becomes Russian, the way he tilts his head when he speaks, his mannerism, everything is fantastic!

Vincent Cassel is also excellent as the narcissistic, confused, violent and down-trodden big-shot mafioso.
After stabbing someone in the eye during a naked fight in a sauna, I have to say Viggo is a real man now!
This is a great movie, an unexpected gem in the rough...definitely a must watch in my books. If you haven't seen it go and find it now and watch it and watch Viggo ROCK IT.
This is a memorable movie, the noirish setting, the vivid characters, great scripting, character development...it has a the lot!
I give it an eye-poking 8.5/10.
10 commentsMovie Review - Zodiac - Gripping!

As a serial killer terrifies the San Francisco Bay Area and taunts police with his ciphers and letters, investigators in four jurisdictions search for the murderer. The case will become an obsession for four men as their lives and careers are built and destroyed by the endless trail of clues.
This is a movie that quite a few people have been talking about, many have mentioned it's well worth a watch. It wasn't hyped that much over here, but it did catch my eye, especially seen as though it had a decent cast and was based on a true story. It should be interesting at the very least.
It turns out it was better than expected, it's stormed straight into the top 250 at IMDB at #244 with a score of 8.0/10! Very rarely do movies get above 7.8 or so, I expect it will drop a little as time passes though and it's position will stabilize.
It's a very well made movie and although it's long at around 2.5 hours, it doesn't feel long. It holds the suspense, pace and interest all the way through. The direction and character buildings are excellent.
Both Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal play their somewhat obsessive characters very well.

I've been a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal since I saw Jarhead and before that Donnie Darko, I can't say he's disappointed me since then.
It's a very well put together movie, which leaves you guessing as to who is who, what's the motive, what is happening and how it's going to end.
The inter-relationships and changing situations of various characters make it very interesting.
It's definitely worth a watch, sorry to rate another movie highly....but there's been a crop of great movies lately, all of which have entered the IMDB coveted top 250, which says something right? Even though I feel IMDB is a little over-rated nowdays.
Flixster is an excellent Web 2.0 alternative built with a social networking aspect...anyway that's off topic.
Go watch Zodiac, it's worth it.
I give it a fascinating 8.5/10.

Tom Stall, a humble family man and owner of a popular neighborhood restaurant, lives a quiet but fulfilling existence in the Midwest. One night Tom foils a crime at his place of business and, to his chagrin, is plastered all over the news for his heroics. Following this, mysterious people follow the Stalls' every move, concerning Tom more than anyone else. As this situation is confronted, more lurks out over where all these occurrences have stemmed from compromising his marriage, family relationship and the main characters' former relations in the process.
This is not a new movie, it came out in 2005 - I can't say I remember hearing about it at that time. Probably not a highly billed film, I just picked it up recently as it looked interesting.
It scores a very high 7.5/10 on IMDB though, which gives an indication that it should be a decent film.
The movie starts out pretty sharply with some strange characters, interesting dialogue and some extreme violence. In some ways the first few scenes reminded me of Tarantino movies.
The movie progresses from there, leaving you wondering what is going to happen next.
Drama is nicely handled through-out, the pacing is good and Mortensen plays his role very well on both sides of the fence.

Starting out as an accidental hero it leaves you with a feeling something odd is happening, and it plays out from there.
The violence is pretty brutal, like the sex scenes - straight to the point and direct. It also plays on some serious issues like 'good' vs 'bad' violence...how do you decide where the line is?
I won't spoil the movie for you, but I will very much suggest that you do watch it.
A brutal and gripping movie, I give it a nose pounding 8.5/10.

Now this is pretty cool..
1,500 plus CPDRC inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center, Cebu, Philippines at practice!
This is not the final routine, and definitely not a punishment! just a teaser.
I think they've got something going on there, get the prisoners working together.
The she-male thing is a bit scary though.

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born in the stench of eighteenth century Paris, develops a superior olfactory sense, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he tries to preserve scents in the search for the ultimate perfume.
This is one hell of a weird film, trippy, twisted and dark.
JUST HOW I LIKE IT!
Gotta say this is a fantastic movie, I came to hear about it from someone who had read the book and after watching it I'll have to get the book as it seems quite a lot was skipped over or simplified in the movie to cater for the American audience.
One thing that struck me hard though, was they could have handled the accents better, seen as though it was set in 17th century France, the actors had very strong English/American accents through-out.
Apart from the lead, but then he hardly spoke.
The acting generally was great, although I feel Dustin Hoffman was a little mis-placed and someone else could have filled the parfumiers boots better.
Ben Whishaw was fantastic as Grenouille, although not as ugly as some people hoped he was suitably creepy as the psychopathic killer.

The period setting is maintained very well and the cinematography, direction and attention to detail is superb.
It's definitely worth watching, especially if you like different movies.
Don't except a typical slasher or fast paced action movie.
This is movie that takes you into someone's life, a dark and fucked up life, a life with a completely different outlook than everyone else.
I'd give it a gripping and twisted 8/10.
9 commentsMovie Review - 16 Blocks - Old Bruce…

Jack Mosley, a burnt-out detective, is assigned the unenviable task of transporting a fast-talking convict from jail to a courthouse 16 blocks away. However, along the way he learns that the man is supposed to testify against Mosley's colleagues, and the entire NYPD wants him dead. Mosley must choose between loyalty to his colleagues and protecting the witness, and never has such a short distance seemed so long
I picked up this movie a while back, seeing Bruce Willis on the cover I thought it must be decent enough.
I was right thankfully, although it wasn't fantastic.
It's a decent enough movie, entertaining, good flow of action, reasonably paced and not too long!
Bruce does look old, fat and out of shape though.

He is playing an alcoholic so it's fitting.
It's not a terribly complex movie, but as a chase movie it's good as numerous times you're left wondering "Ok, so how the hell is he going to get out of this one?!"
Worth a watch if you want something light, I've been watching too many heavy movies later.
For it's genre 16 Blocks is pretty good, I'll give it an entertaining 7/10.
