Spoiler Alert

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a ranty blog post in this category, 4 years in fact. It used to get fairy well used haha.

Part of what blogging used to originally be I guess, a diary, a journal, somewhere to vent, somewhere to be grateful, somewhere to celebrate. I guess we should go back to that type of blogging, lose the commercialism. I think medium.com has brought that back to some degree.

Anyway, that’s off topic. Because for now, I want to talk about selfish, self-absorbed pricks who are into posting spoilers on social media – be it about a movie or a TV series, either way it is 100% guaranteed that you are ruining SOMEONE’S enjoyment.

But then the people that post that kind of stuff obviously don’t give a shit about anyone else do they, empathy? Realizing that not everyone watches new episodes immediately when they come out – that’s too hard.

Me for example, I like to wait until the entire season is finished, then watch it all at my own pace (and that’s a very normal way to consume now, Netflix realized that and release their series in a single chunk, so you can binge watch House of Cards in one weekend).

Yah, I get excited about TV shows sometimes too, and you can post stuff without being explicit about details. I don’t post spoilers because I know for a fact there’s a lot of people who don’t watch stuff until much later, which is fine – I’m not going to be the one to ruin their fun. If you need to discuss it, do it in real life with people who’ve also watched it already.

It’s like those people that come out of the movie theatre and start telling everyone about the movie they’ve just seen in explicit detail without asking everyone if they’ve watched it first..

It’s that’s bad, there’s actually an app to deal with it called Spoiler Shield (unfortunately only for iOS).

If you REALLY REALLY must post a spoiler, how hard is it just to type SPOILER ALERT, then a few lines of dots so that whatever you type is hidden below ‘See more’. Like a friend that did this for example – this is what a decent human being does:

How to post a spoiler like a human

There’s collapsible spoilers plugins for WordPress, there’s spoiler functionality in Tumblr and other platforms, it’s there for a reason – because posting spoilers out in the open is a DICK MOVE.

Spoilers alerts used to be a thing, I guess people used to care about each other more. Now they think since the media publish spoiler stories, it’s ok for them to Tweet/Facebook it – the fact is it’s easy to avoid reading spoiler stories and they are generally well marked.

It’s hard to avoid it on Facebook when you open it and someone’s posted a massive spoiler with pictures and explicit details and it’s at the top of your news feed – pray tell how do I avoid that?

And the funny part is, in Game of Thrones for example – I’ve read the books..I could spoil the fuck out of the whole season, and the next season..But I don’t.

For those that are looking for a timeline on when it’s ok to post spoilers, honestly it’s not really ever ok – I watched The Sopranos in full 6-7 years after it came out. I avoided reading anything about it until after I’d watched it.

If you must post a spoiler, do it at least after the current season has finished, preferably not until the next season comes out for TV shows. Movies, at least after the Bluray came out..and when you do – put a spoiler warning/hide it.

The sad part is, the people who do it don’t even care, they won’t read this, they won’t stop being pricks – there’s no cure.

The Dark Knigh Rises (2012)

Eight years on, a new terrorist leader, Bane, overwhelms Gotham’s finest, and the Dark Knight resurfaces to protect a city that has branded him an enemy.

Obviously this film was some time back, but I’ve been quite a fail blogger as late….and I’ve been meaning to write about it for ages. Now another film has come along that I want to write about (guess what?) – so I need to get this out of the way first.

So far, as 2012 goes, this is still the film of the year for me – and quite possibly one of the best films of all time in my books. Of course I watched in full IMAX glory, and it blew my face off.

I was literally on the edge of my seat for the entire 165 minutes – which makes it rather a long film. But did it feel long? Not at all. It’s at 8.8 on IMDB and already #29 on the top 250. I believe it’ll go higher, quite probably into the top 10 at some point. At least I think it deserves to be there anyway.

Batman Begins started the trilogy way back in 2005, and I think, heralded a new era in darker – more realistic super hero movies. Then The Dark Knight came along in 2008 and blew us away with the creepy, truly scary rendition of the joker.

And then July 2012 came, and the movie we’d all been waiting 4 years for came around – The Dark Knight Rises. Christian Bale was once again phenomenal as Batman, this time showing a wounded, much more human portrayal. An older, frailer Batman – not something we’d seen in the comic book style movies that came previously.

Christian Bale as Batman

And then there was Catwoman, who didn’t love Michelle Pfeiffer and well…Halle Berry was just disastrous. But Anne Hathaway – yummy! Great casting, and it was a much more realistic spin on the whole thing…rather than some old spinster getting eaten by her cats and getting super powers. She’s just a hot cat burglar…in a tight leather suit…mmmmm

Anyway enough about her. On to Bane, Bane scared the shit out of me – seriously. He was just quietly terrifying, and you could imagine when he hit you…it REALLY hurt. He was such a brute, but so fast and dextrous.

Quite possibly the best villain ever seen on the silver screen.

Tom Hardy as Bane

The action sequences in this movie were amongst the most immense I’ve ever seen, the score, the cinematography – everything just culminated into audio-visual mindfuck. The stadium scene, with the sweeping panaromic shots and the bass of the explosion rumbling in your stomach..That my friends is movie making.

There’s not much more I can say about this film, and there probably isn’t much more I need to say as you’ve most likely seen it already. And if you haven’t you’re silly because it’s not on IMAX any more.

I give this film 10/10 as I truly can’t think of anything I’d want to improve upon.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Peter Parker finds a clue that might help him understand why his parents disappeared when he was young. His path puts him on a collision course with Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner.

The last time I talked about the Spider-Man franchine was a LONG time ago in 2007 – as that’s when the last movie of the previous franchise came out: Movie Review – Spiderman 3 – Too long.. And well who loved Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man? No one really, yes he had the goofy part down part, but he was certainly not fit to be a superhero.

Finally they got around to rebooting Spider-Man, and they picked a great lead to do it with – Andrew Garfield. You would probably remember him from The Social Network as Eduardo Saverin. A much better fit than Mr Maguire IMHO, he’s not so nerdy but he makes a MUCH better Spider-Man, it’s a lot more faithful to the comic book universe and character it’s based on.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

The movie itself is beautifully shot and crafted, it makes subtle use of 3D – especially in the scenes of Spidey swinging through NYC – and it is absolutely stunning. The effects in general are great, although for some reason I found the bad guy looked too similar to Hulk in the Avengers (rendered by the same studio perhaps?).

If there’s one reason to watch it, it’s the reason Denis Leary gave – watch it to see Emma Stone in IMAX 3D – it’s worth it for that alone. She may not be the best actress around, but she is smoking hot.

Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

As the experience of watching the movie, I honestly found it quite boring – it was visually arresting and entertaining and the action scenes were great but I found it too long, extremely poorly paced and rather draggy in the middle.

Plus it’s not so exciting to re-watch a story you already know so well (boy gets bitten by spider, develops new powers, his uncle dies, he becomes a crime fighting superhero etc). Perhaps I’ll enjoy the next instalment more.

It’s certainly more inline with my tastes, more realistic and more gritty like the Batman reboot – but still..I don’t know – it just wasn’t the enthralling to watch.

It is a must watch movie of course, but it just doesn’t nail it for me – I’m surprised it scores so highly on IMDB with 7.6 – but I’ve lost faith in the ratings on IMDB some time ago. I imagine it’ll probably drop to a 6.x as time goes by.

The acting was good all around and there’s some great room for character development to continue, so I shall await the next episode.

I give it a limp spiderweb 6.5/10.

Promethus (2012)

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

This is a film I’ve been looking forward to all year, I even mentioned it in my reviews of MIB III and Avengers.

It’s certainly been a controversial movie as it raises a lot of questions, far more questions than it answers. As a supposed prequel to the Aliens franchise, it bears a lot of similarities with the hardcore female protagonist (Sigourney Weaver/Noomi Rapace) and the robot sidekick (Michael Fassbender/Lance Henriksen). And well it was originally supposed to be a prequel, but later turned into an original work – albeit one that exists in the same fictional universe as Alien.

I’m a huge fan of the first 2 movies of the Aliens series, 3 and 4 were just trash. There’s been a lot of discussion how it relates to those movies, especially with the last scene and the Ridley Scott connection.

It’s doing well on IMDB with 7.6, although my faith in IMDB is getting less and less as the years go by – movies with high ratings can be 2 hours of pretentious crap. But that’s another topic altogether.

If you want a humorous look at the movie, you should check out these thoughts from Maddox – Prometheus in a nutshell.

As for my thoughts, I thought it was a fantastic movie – it was extremely visually stimulating (on IMAX 3D anyway) – it was beautifully crafted with subtle but enthralling 3D effects and it was just generally stunning.

I am rather confused as to why Charlize Theron was in the movie at all, but she’s hot so I won’t complain.

Charlize Theron - Prometheus

Michael Fassbender, who is one of the rising stars at the moment (especially after flipping his overly large penis out in Shame) was excellent as a dude playing a robot can be. He looked suitably robot like.

Michael Fassbender - Prometheus (2012)

If you don’t know who he is, you might remember him as the young Magneto from the new X-men movie.

All all in, it’s an extremely gripping, beautiful filmed, visually arresting spectacle. If you are a sci-fi fan, regardless of what you’ve heard – it’s a movie you absolutely MUST watch.

I plan to watch it again, later in it’s fully uncut form as apparently some parts were cut out in the Malaysian cinema version and I personally can’t wait until the next movie in the series comes out.

If you have already watched the film and were really confused by the movie, read this:

Prometheus: 8 Key Themes In Understanding The Film

I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was perfectly paced and time passed unnoticed – I walked out the theater feeling somewhat stunned, confused and amazed all at the same time. It’s a movie you’ll watch, take time to digest, think about, discuss and probably watch again later.

If you haven’t watched it, you must! I give it a mind-bending 8.5/10.

Men in Black III (2012)

Agents J and K are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner.

The original Men in Black rocked our World’s 15 years ago in 1997, a truly unique concept with whacky aliens and great chemistry between the two main protagonists.

The rather lackluster second part (Men in Black II) rolled in exactly 10 years ago in 2002 – it definitely didn’t cash in on the franchise and left us with a rather dull taste in our mouths.

Suddenly out of the blue (for me anyway), comes the 3rd part and apparently the end to the series. The series used the 10 year break very well and headed back to it’s roots, it delivered the same fun sci-fi comedy that the first movie nailed so well.

The chemistry between Will Smith and Tommy Lee is just great as always, it’s like the partnership of in the Rush Hour between Chris Rock & Jackie Chan.

MIB III (2012)

It’s a really fun film, and honestly speaking WAY better than I expected. The pacing is great, the plot is reasonable enough, the filming and cinematography is great and the whole flashback to the hippy era with a whole scene about Andy Warhol was just GREAT.

The 60’s/70’s part of the story allowed for a great soundtrack too.

And Josh Brolin is an amazing bit of casting, he really looks like a young less sullen version of Tommy Lee Jones – he’s a really powerful actor.

Josh Brolin as Agent K - MIB3 (2012)

Definitely good enough to tide me over until I get a chance to watch Prometheus! One of the movies I’m really looking forwards to this year.

Anyway MIB3 is a definite must watch for fans of the series, even if you’re not a particular raving fan – it’s an enjoyable movie and well worth spending your money to see.

I give it a Boris The ANIMAL – 7.5/10.

The Avengers (2012)

Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D. brings together a team of super humans to form The Avengers to help save the Earth from Loki and his army.

I went through a period last year of watching a movie almost every weekend, it tailed off after a while though and honestly 2012 hasn’t been a great year for movies so far, the only thing I’ve watched which I thought worth writing about was Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – that was the time I discovered the joy of TGV IMAX in Sunway.

I’ve watched a few things since then, but nothing really noteworthy – so far Avengers has blown everything out of the water in 2012 – it’s also doing amazingly well on IMDB with a stonking (and deserved) 8.8/10. I’m also of course looking forwards massively to The Dark Knight Rises in July and The Hobbit in December – those are big contenders for 2012.

I also have a fair amount of hope for Prometheus in June mostly due to the fact it’s directed by Ridley Scott.

Anyway back to the Avengers, of course I’ve watched every single Marvel film in the series –

Iron Man (2008)
Hulk (2008)
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Thor (2011)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Some were better than others of course, but Iron Man really was the only one that stood out for me – the rest were ok. There’s going to be an Iron Man 3 (in 2013) as well – so let’s see how that goes.

Anyway, back to the movie – The Avengers – I thought it was great! Especially on IMAX 3D – it was a visual spectacular and the most enjoyable cinema experience I’ve had for quite some time. It was very well paced, the dialogue was witty and the cinematography was suitably epic.

The Avengers (2012)

Obviously there’s not a whole lot in the way of storyline, but what were you expecting? In some ways the story is quite similar to that of Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon.

Acting wise the whole cast delivered, even Robin Scherbatsky – yah she’s in there! And for the record, this is the first movie where I’ve found Scarlett Johansson attractive.

This is definitely the best team based superhero movie EVER made and quite possibly the best comic book adaptation so far.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you should go and watch it ASAP at TGV Sunway on the REAL IMAX screen in 3D – it’s well worth the extra few bucks.

That’s all – go watch it! I give it a PUNY GOD 9/10.

One of my favourite films during my seminal raving days was Human Traffic, and it’s probably still one of my favourite films today – I can watch it over and over because it doesn’t really have a plot.

It’s just a bunch of moments that all ravers will empathise with, captured on film. There’s one seen where the character Kip is selling records and wearing a wicked T-shirt with a set of turntables on it and the words Junglist Movement. I’ve wanted that shirt since I first saw the film around 1999. Here’s the scene with the shirt:

I don’t know why, but I recently had the urge to track down the t-shirt and buy it – so that’s I did.

Red Junglist Movement T-shirt

I ordered it, and it just arrive so I’m proudly wearing it today 🙂

ShaolinTiger - Junglist Movement

It’s also bloody hot today!

And yah I’m living my dreams – with my Junglist Movement shirt! Have a good weekend all.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

Blamed for the terrorist bombing of the Kremlin, IMF operative Ethan Hunt is disavowed along with the rest of the agency when the President initiates “Ghost Protocol”. Left without any resources or backup, Ethan must find a way to clear his agency’s name and prevent another attack. To complicate matters further, Ethan is forced to embark on this mission with a team of fellow IMF fugitives whose personal motives he does not fully know.

I’ve been wanting to watch this for ages, I was even looking forwards to the premiere – but we sadly missed that..and of course I wanted to watch it on the new Sunway TGV IMAX! What’s better than watching this years xmas action blockbuster on a REALLY huge screen.

Finally got around to watching it this weekend and everyone has been saying it’s a must watch movie – it’s doing really well on IMDB at the moment with 7.8 and I imagine it might get even better.

It’s been a while since I remember anything with Tom Cruise in it, of course he was hilarious in Tropical Thunder – War of the Worlds was forgettable and Knight and Day was just shite.

Tom Cruise is of course bad ass..coincidentally, the last movie by Mr Cruise I blogged about was Mission Impossible III….Which was passable – but that was about it. I’m surprised it still holds onto a 6.8 on IMDB.

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt

And well basically, this is just a hell of a movie – it’s fast-paced, action packed, entertaining, amusing and generally a good time will be had by all. The camera work was great, some of the action scenes were truly epic and the sound-track was booming.

It has an especially rocking impact if you watch it on a MASSIVE IMAX screen with crystal clear sound – great experience. A lot of the funnier moments were of course delivered by Simon Pegg.

As you would expect, Simon Pegg is funny..he’s come a long way from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz – he showed his talents first in Star Trek I guess.

Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn

You may well know the ‘baddie’ in this film Kurt Hendricks AKA Cobalt or Michael Nyqvist – from the original version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Michael Nyqvist as Kurt Hendricks

All in all, it’s a really good movie – well crafted, well directed and very well executed. Kudos to Tom Cruise on his producer spot – he nailed this one and has bought the Mission Impossible franchise back with a bang.

The technology is truly impressive (as it should be) and the missions truly impossible (as they should be) – and of course the cleavage rating is high with Paula Patton delivering the goods.

If you haven’t watched it yet, go and make it happen and watch it on IMAX – I’m actually looking forwards to watching any epic 2D films that come out on IMAX – especially when the next TGV IMAX opens nearer to my place at 1-Utama!

I give this movie an adrenaline pumping 7.5/10.

Immortals (2011)

The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission. As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion’s raids.

This was a movie, I have to admit, I was quite excited about after seeing the billboards and the trailer it looked hopeful that we may finally have a veritable contender to Frank Miller’s 300. After the dissapointment that was Clash of the Titans, could this herald the return of the Roman era?

Honestly after the series Spartacus – it had some high standards to live up to. For me the lead actor was as about as wooden as Keanu Reeves at his worst, I didn’t care about his character or the simplistic story line.

Henry Cavill in Immortals

And oh hoorah, we have to look forward to more of him as the new Superman in 2013 – but then again, Superman has always been fairly wooden.

The cinematography was beautiful, the soundtrack was forgettable and the fights were too fake for me. Too much obvious CGI, in this day and age after watching movies like the most recent Planet of the Apes and of course the LOTR Trilogy – it’s unforgivable.

The ‘Titans’ looked like something out of a badly constructed PlayStation 3 game.

For me the show was stolen by Mickey Rourke as Hyperion, he’s an extremely convincing villain and since his come back in the The Wrestler I’ve been constantly impressed with his performances. You gotta admit he was the highlight of Iron Man 2 as well as Ivan Vanko / Whiplash.

Mickey Rourke as Hyperion in Immortals

The only other convincing actor in the whole thing was John Hurt as the human form of Zeus, the lead women wasn’t even hot, yah that girl from Slumdog Millionaire and Rise of the Planet of the Apes – Freida Pinto.

And Zeus himself, father of all Gods, was played rather poorly by Luke Evans who ironically also played Apollo in the train wreck that was the Clash of the Titans remake in 2010.

And just a heads-up, the 3D version is a post-conversion…so no, it’s not really a 3D movie.

Would I recommend you watch this movie? No not really, and if you do – make sure you watch the uncensored version. It’s bound to moderately better with all the violence and some boobs.

I give it a rather poor, head chopping 4.5/10.

Real Steel (2011)

In the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, Charlie Kenton is a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next.

Heard about this movie a while back, and well anything with Hugh Jackman in it is bound to be pretty good – add that up with some fighting robots and you’ve got a winner in my books.

It’s doing pretty well on IMDB with 7.0/10 – but bear in mind it’s not actually screening yet so that score may well change after 13th October when it hits the big screens.

Hugh Jackman played the part of Charlie Kenton rather well, he’s a very Wolverine kind of character (cowboy, trouble maker, owes people money etc.)

Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton

He seems to play that type of role very well..there’s no much other acting going on the film – his son is pretty good as played by Dakota Goyo. He’s cute but not overly annoying.

The main meat of the film is the robots and the interaction between Charlie and his son, there’s are a few supporting roles – one of course being the love interest.

It’s always good when a movie has a hot love interest too, in Real Steal it’s Bailey Tallet as played by Evangeline Lilly and she’s HAWT!

She doesn’t really do much though, adds a bit of relationship stuff to the movie and sits around looking pretty mostly.

And the CG is absolutely stunning, the robot boxing matches are spectacular – even the training scenes involving Atom are just great. CG really has come a very, very, very long way since those early days in the 90s. It looks so realistic now it’s becoming hard to differentiate from live action scenes.

Real Steel 2011

The movie is well paced, the soundtrack is good and there’s a good mix of humour, action and drama. It’s pretty much a regular sports flick, but with robots boxing instead of humans.

This is definitely the best robot movie of the year, I have to agree with eyeris on this one – Transformers 3 just can’t stand up to boxing robots!

And it’s definitely worth watching in the cinema, it’s a very visually impressive movie.

I give it a solid, robot smashing 8.5/10.

And of course, thanks to Tune Talk for inviting me to the pre-screening!
