Finally A New Design For The Motor Trader Website!

As you should know by now, I’m a lover of Motorsports and Cars – and even when I’m not looking to buy a car I browse through the classifieds and check out the car prices or look at online sites like Motor Trader.

I was glad to see the Motor Trader magazine when I came over here from the UK with it’s familiar format like the UK Auto Trader.

Sadly however, I wasn’t greeted with such a good website as they have in UK – the Malaysia Motor Trader site left a lot to be desired. Especially the front page and navigation of the site, it was rather hard to use, hard to search and basically unattractive. They have improved the usability a few times in recent years but the front page will still stuck in 1998 – as you can see here:

Thankfully they’ve finally done a revamp on the site with a completely new front page – which is really quite attractive. It’s not so swamped with adverts, it’s much easier to navigate and has links to the Motor Trader social media resources like Facebook and so on.

The backend hasn’t altered though and most of the rest of the layout seems the same, just the colours have changed like on the search results page:

The colour changes do improve the UI/UX and make it easier to read without so much eye-strain.

The site also has much better visual elements now to aid with navigation and usability:

Things still to improve:

  • A more advanced search feature (search on age/price limits/colour/location/trim level/body type/transmission/engine cc etc.)
  • Maintain aspect ratio from the original uploaded picture for thumbnails
  • Don’t use pop-ups (enough info is shown on the search results page – use a lightbox gallery)
  • Don’t use such long URLs – convert to clean URLS/permalinks

Anyway, do check out the new site – it’s worth a look:

They are also running the Liverpool Football Club Asia Tour 2011 Contest to see Liverpool FC play in Malaysia on 16th July 2011 – Training will be on 14th July 2011 and every ticket comes with a training pass too.

All you need to do is:

  • Like their Facebook Page
  • Answer three simple questions
  • Fill out your details

That’s it! They will call you if you’ve won. More details here – Win Tickets to Watch Liverpool FC

The contest ENDS on 10th July 2011 (Sunday) – so you better be fast!

Check out the Motor Trader Facebook page here as they’ve got lots of news, etc:

it’s still the best site for used cars search but man I’d love to meet the person behind their website and have a really long chat..

I like the new design but they need to have more mandatory fields in the car classified sections. Based on heavy usage on or, I tend to find that the other two provide more information about the car as well as more photos as compared to MotorTrader.

Myhorng: Yah not too bad for 2 years depreciation, almost same price. Yours probably dropped even less.

KY: I dunno, I personally get better results on Mudah (both our cars are from Mudah).

Mark: Yah UI wise is better, but functionality is still extremely lacking.
