Exercise – Nike Plus and a Little Gadget for your iPod!

I’ve taken up exercising again, battling the fat! Taking in less calories, eating less trans/saturated fats (no more mamak) and exercising regularly sometimes. I’ve lost about 4kg so far’so I’m not doing too bad, but I’ve got a long long way to go!

Anyway Nike has this Nike+ technology jointly developed by Apple and Nike and a new gadget which is pretty cool. Basically it’s a device similar to an Odometer that fits into your shoe and measures your pace and how far you’ve traveled (running or walking). They call it the ‘sensor’ and it uses footstrike technology. You can read more about how it works in Wikipedia : Nike+iPod.

You can also key in your weight and it’ll tell you how many calories you’ve burned (approximately). You can fit the sensor into any Nike+ compatible shoe and it’s 92% accurate without calibration.

Just pop the sensor into your shoe – plug the receiver into your iPod Shuffle and off you go.

These are Nike+ ready shoes..

The sensor is pretty small and in the Nike+ ready shoes there is a little slot for it with a rubber filler in.

So you peel up the inner-sole take the filler out and pop the sensor in the slot.

Put the insole back and the shoes on and off you go! You have to configure the iPod too which isn’t too hard, and if you sign up online at www.nikeplus.com.my you can store your results online too.

The site has some pretty cool stuff showing your run history and pace for each run.

It also provides audio feedback over the top of the songs you are listening to and there are pre-recorded congrats from Lance Armstrong and Paula Radcliffe depending if you selected male or female voice feedback.

There is also a nifty ‘power song’ feature, where if you are slowing down the device will detect it and play a pre-selected PowerSong to get you pumped up and back up to pace.

If you regularly run outdoors though, it will be something that’s useful to track your progress and improvement in fitness.

Previous Work-out

It stores your last few work-outs, this was mine’I was watching the England vs France Semi finals (Rugby World Cup) though so I was walking more than running.

I was joyful after England won though!

Me

If you’re into Gadgets and Running this might be the setup for you, check it out at your nearest Nike Concept Store.

Nike is currently running a promotion at 3 Nike stores ‘ Mid Valley, 1 Utama and KLCC where if you buy a pair of Nike+ enabled shoes you are entitled to a FREE Nike+ Sport Kit. All you need to do is download the voucher from www.nikeplus.com.my.

Promotion runs till end October (or till stocks last).

    Cool!!

However, I’ve read the Nike+ website and it states that we should not use it if we run on treadmills and etc… Hmmm… 😛

Anyway, it’s a cool gadget. Wished I could get it though. 🙁

I want to keep fit by using this technology as well, I am considered fat!

How much did you pay for the shoe?

Kuzco: Gave it back already 🙁

Angie Tan: Works fine on treadmills la – don’t worry about that.

krug88: I think it’s RM138, last time I saw. Treadmill it works fine too, anything that has a footstrike. Cycling and all it won’t work.

Wayne Liew: The shoes are expensive (Over RM500), but there are cheaper Nike+ models.

for cycling just drop by the friendly bike shop and purchase an odometer please. Plus there’ a heart rate monitor too.. plus cycling has lower impact compared to running.. hahah
