Save The Sumatran Rhinos – Honda’s Rhino Rescue Project

I believe in good causes, you may not think I do..but I grew up in an environmentally friendly home where we recycle, use our own compost for growing vegetables and herbs and are careful about the resources we use.

My dear mom is an active member of the WWF (World Wildlife Federation – nothing to do with wrestling) and many other conservation projects.

Closer to home Honda together with WWF-Malaysia has started a new project to save the Sumatran rhinos, they have committed to a 5 year effort. Honda Malaysia themselves has actually pledged a massive 5 million ringgit to WWF-Malaysia to enable WWF-Malaysia take the conservation efforts for the Sumatran Rhino project to the next level. Of course it’s not just about throwing money around, the project also aims to educate and raise awareness.

There are some up-coming events for the rest of the year as follows:

  • August / September 2007 – Honda Malaysia School Programme to 8 Primary Schools in Klang Valley
  • January 2008 – Honda Malaysia School Programme to 4 Primary Schools in Johor Bahru
  • March 2008 – Honda Malaysia School Programme to 4 Primary Schools in Penang

You may ask why the Sumatran Rhino and not something else? Well it’s currently the nation’s most endangered species and it’s a cause close to home which people can really identify with.

Poaching, logging activities and deforestation to make way for large-scale agriculture cultivation are adding to the rapid decline in Sumatran Rhino population. Until now. Honda Malaysia is the first and only corporation dedicated to sponsoring a long term project to save the Sumatran rhino.

Sadly there is estimated to be less than 300 Sumatran rhinos left in the world.

Since the species was categorized as Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in 1996, no corporation has stepped forward to commit itself totally to saving the Sumatran rhinos.

Honda has partaken in other similar projects in our neighboring countries such as Thailands Honda Thailand Foundation and Philippines Lamesa dam Watershed Afforestation Project.

We hope you all can help raise awareness for this project and do some good!

Thanks for reading.

i wish the dodo were still exist, the flightless avian has been extinct for centuries…

at the rate that we are going, spewing toxic gases into the atmosphere, dumping toxic waste into our rivers, rapid deforestation, all this would lead to global warming and the greenhouse effect… which leads to polar icecaps melting and rising sea levels… i won’t be surprised if we are forced to relocate to mars in the not too distant future

rainerteh: Yeah, I hope we can save a few more species from extinction with campaigns like this raising awareness. People need to understand that our planet is a very finely balanced ecology and we can’t simply do whatever we like.
